Title: So I made my first real purchase with Bitcoin
Post by: intristin on November 08, 2015, 09:29:31 AM
I was planning to just save up my Bitcoin and not buy anything. But then my mouse stopped working. Well it works but a single click in now double clicks everything. So I can't drag windows around or move icons and selecting txt is a nightmare. So I needed a new mouse but it's not in my budget for the month. I then discovered that my favorite site to buy computer parts at accepts Bitcoin as payment. So I went there, found a nice Keyboard mouse package deal on sale and purchased it using bitcoin. It was super painless, in fact the process was super fast, even faster then typing in my credit-card info. I just selected bitcoin at check out, hit submit which gave me a QR code, scanned it with my phone, and bam, the website updated instantly and thanked me for my purchase. Now if I could only do that on amazon or at my local deli to buy beer, eggs, bread, and milk I would close down my Citibank account and go totally bitcoin. You hear me bitcoin DEVS, make it happen.....    ;D

You can always buy Amazon gift cards through Gyft. You can always get gift cards for a bunch of other retailers. I recommend checking it out :D

Ya I know, but it kind of defeats the purpose in my mind. I mean right now I buy bitcoins with cash. So if I wanted to shop with giftcards I could would just skip the bitcoin part and buy the giftcards with cash as it would save money and time.

You can always invest in one of the several bitcoin debit cards that's available. In that way you can spend your bitcoin at your local deli. Bit-X and Xapo offers a card that is directly linked to your wallet [think there is others also] so you do not even have to 'load' the card beforehand, just swipe it and the amount comes off your wallet.

Congrats on your first Bitcoin purchase and it really is convenient to use I hope you enjoy your mouse
And as for in person it is being worked on there are a bunch of services that have it set up to run, bitstamp had a cool one going to it's just a matter of getting merchants to use it now but give it time the hardware exists now we just need to get people to utilize it ^^.

I had a mouse that crashed my entire computer when it started malfunctioning. I checked everything else, including the hard drive, and memory before I realized it was the mouse. I eventually brought a new one through Paypal. but next time I'm going to use Bitcoin. I didn't think about using it to buy computer equipment, but it sounds more convenient than Paypal.

Congratulations. The more real use of the bitcoin, the better for the bitcoin ecosystem. Bitcoin has to be useful before it is adopted.

The debit card companies are already jumping on the bandwagon. VISA has come out with a Bitcoin debit card. So yes, your dream to shop at your grocery store with bitcoins could just come true. Let us hope the virtual currency does away with scams before that happens, makes it more safe and reliable.

True. But purse.io is also worth a try if you're thinking about getting a gift card more rebates IMO and there are various safety tips to follow. :)

But the premium that you need to pay is much much higher than directly exchanging Bitcoin on an exchange and transfer it to your local bank account. AFAIK, Visa hasn't came out with such a thing and is unlikely to come out with it. Any link to this news? The only Bitcoin spending card I can think of is coinkite.

Good on you. Any legal bitcoin purchase is a good and helps the community and the ecosystem. People should be proud of spending a bit of coin and should be praised for doing so; even if its just a bit now and then.

This is what we need... Make purchases with Bitcoin, make it circulate and have more merchants accepting it. Keep on buying with Bitcoin :)

Satoshi already made it happen and devs are making it happen everyday... People just got to pick it up ;)

Amazon is one of the major opponents of Bitcoin. Not only they have refused to accept Bitcoin, but also they have indulged in propaganda campaigns against BTC. If you purchase something from Amazon, you are helping one of the major rivals of Bitcoin. And at the same time Bitcoin is not benefiting out of it, as the gift card was used for the purchase. I prefer online shopping using Overstock.

The more people are willing to spend their coins instead of just using them for investment purposes only, the more likely large merchants will show their support by accepting Bitcoin as form of payment. They need to see that people are spending.

That sounds very convenient and much more easy than using a credit card even :) Just unlock your wallet and go!

I have some worse experience doing a purchase in a local shop. The shop hardly knew how to use the system and it took like 5 minutes to get my payment done.

Feels great to be part of something incredible right?! That is the best what everybody can do in the beginning when being new into Bitcoin.Experiencing it makes it much easier to understand it afterwards.
However try to refill your Bitcoin stash as soon as possible.Price might continue rising.

Maybe so but Amazon is soooo cheap, and their delivery is sooo fast, it's hard to resist.

You say you scanned a code, so do you have a mobile wallet?

Ya i'm using Blockchain mobile wallet. I know some people hate them because of their XT support but they have this nifty GPS feature the shows me local stores that accept bitcoin. None around my apartment in Brooklyn but in Manhattan there is a ton of bars and restaurants I can go to. I like it better then the coinbase wallet I was using.

Which website did you end up buy your mouse from? If you don't mind sharing of course.

NewEgg, I have shopped there for years building and upgrading my computers, I always use them for parts. I went for a mouse and ended up buying a combo. It's cheap but it suits my needs. I got this one becuase green is my favorite color, I was born in March, lol, so I had to have it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823129036

I find it so hard to explain to my friends what a digital currency is. Bitcoin will grow when it's dead simple to use. I think we are getting there, but it's taking a while.

Arguably, they aren't always 100% accurate. They can be wrong about this, some places place the  "Bitcoin accepted here" tag but do not actually accept them. Most hate it for the security issues that has arose in the past and not because of their XT support. I believe there are plenty of apps which allow users to search for Bitcoin accepted buisnesses.

Which was the online shopping website?

I know of only few websites that accept bitcoin payments but none of them ship to my country and hence except a debit card, nothing can really help me. Just wish Amazon accepts bitcoin payment or Flipkart then I can directly make payments online for products.

Do you live in India? The online shopping sector in India is rapidly growing, with intense competition between the major players (ebay.in, amazon.in, snapdeal, flipkart, paytm.etc). And also, the market is not saturated, unlike the case with countries such as China and Japan. You Indians should convince these major players to accept Bitcoin. Tell them that their customer base will increase if they accept BTC.

Well some people are holding bitcoin hoping it get a bigger value ,some people investing a good ammount to play with the volatility of bitcoin to generate income, only big ammounts can do a good income enought to pay their bills.I wanna purchase a cellphone and i hope the new market start to let us pay with bitcoin, but i know industry is scared because it can be worthing 400 now and 320 dollars in 2 minutes ,maybe is why the most shop online dont allow to pay with it.

Don't see why dev's should have to do with bitcoin acceptance; there's enough options available for merchants to accept bitcoin, and it's their choice if the don't want to.
Reason for that is still low volume they have from it, so they probably don't want a hassle for few purchases..
Anyways, it good that you are actually using bitcoins, i buy everything i can with it as well, and just like you said; it was done in a matter of seconds.

Yeah, that is the dream of every bitcoin user that bitcoins should be widely used and accepted even at the small local shops where we can even buy our daily stuff using bitcoins as a mode of payment, and once it is done, no one can stop bitcoins in becoming a global currency and looking at the popularity of bitcoins I believe that day will come very soon.

I have never purchase anything (physical good) at store that accept Bitcoin. I only exchanged my Bitcoin for Amazon Giftcards and than use those Giftcards to buy 1. Google Cardboard and 2. Gaming Mouse (like you!). I am planning to buy a Tablet from Amazon next and if NewEgg Black Friday sales include a cheap (and powerful) graphic card I will also buy from NewEgg. Hopefully one of NewEgg staff read my post and decided to have a big discount on some form of graphic card. I will than be able to make my first purchase (of a physical good) on a Bitcoin accepting site!
