Title: Bitcoin Black Friday - Episode 4: A New Hope
Post by: JonHolmquist on November 11, 2015, 05:14:28 PM
This is the fourth year I'm throwing Bitcoin Black Friday. I've loved seeing Bitcoin rise and rise each year I've done this event. All the merchants I deal with are fantastic people and I'm super pumped to see what deals they're going to put out this year.

For those of you who might be new to the community or missed the last three Bitcoin Black Fridays, BBF is a campaign to promote Bitcoin and Bitcoin Merchants. Each year we aggregate all the deals Bitcoin merchants offer and send out information to the press to show them what Bitcoin can buy you for the holidays.

If you're a merchant and want to sign up, the form is located here: http://bitcoinblackfriday.com/merchant

Now, some updates to what has changed this year:

- Less emphasis on numbers. We're not going to shoot for the same exponential progression in merchant sign ups like we've done the last three years. We're aiming on getting quality merchants and discounts this year, and getting rid of all the clutter.

- Simplifying. Last year we tried to roll out extra things on top of what our core offering is. None of them were overly successful and it distracted from what the website is actually about, the deals. This also means we'll be making a simpler, cleaner website to list the deals

- More focus on advertising to the Bitcoin community. This year we're going to triple our efforts to get the word out about Bitcoin Black Friday to Bitcoin consumers. Hopefully the price bump will get people ready to spend some BTC and support our merchants.

- Select deals will be revealed to our newsletter before the day itself. These deals will help tease the event and get people excited for what's coming.

Sign up for the newsletter at http://bitcoinblackfriday.com (http://bitcoinblackfriday.com) if you want to get a reminder about the day. Let me know if you guys have any questions!

TL;DR: Bitcoin Black Friday with a better experience, coming November 27th.

That's a pretty good idea.  Seems like a good time to reach out to merchants to employ accepting BTC.  I mean, they want to make all the money they possibly can, right?

The same thing happened last year. Some pretty big guys like hashnest and genesis mining were offering some pretty good deals. But in my opinion Black Friday is just another sham to clickbait people into buying their stuff. That said I'd love to get some deals with hashnest going ;D

I would love to see something that offers discount as well as integrates bitcoin so as to be used on other famous marketplaces. I don't think a lot of people usually would buy miners and all individually at this point .

This! If this site can keep the click bait off as well as getting more and more support from merchants and awesome deals makes me really excited. I get so tired of searching black friday ads just to see "sales" of electronics and items that have there prices marked up to make the sales look that much better. Most (probably 80% of the items for sale on black friday) are either reduced to a lackluster point or have been on sale for cheaper at a previous point in the year.

TLDR Excited to sign up for bitcoin black friday!

Next year it would be a Mega even with close proximity of block halving.

That's the whole new direction. I went through all the sales myself last year and some of them were either on incredibly sketchy sites or barely offering a discount.

Much cleaner experience this year, only featuring the stuff people are going to click on anyways.

Your tl;dr version isn't giving me the gist of your topic.

I guess your talking about Black Friday sales using Bitcoin.

So I guess Purse.io is gonna be very, very busy on Black Friday! Cyber Monday is the thing where I live, I much prefer that sale period to the post Christmas sales as I can get stuff for my family easier.

Anyone actually spending their coins on stuff? Surely spending your fiat is a better idea, I don't see why you'd part (unless the price jumps).

The net affect of Black Friday on the price of Bitcoin will be this :

The hoarders will release some coins to buy some of these items and the merchants will dump it via payment processors on exchanges to convert it to fiat. The supply of Bitcoin will increase and the need will be the same. This will push the price downwards.

After Black Friday, we will see a significant price drop. My guess would be at least $50 - $80.

I hope people buy tons of thing with bitcoin

Why? It will make merchants very curious about it, and we will see many merchants join + We will see many customers joining too. You know buying some gifts for X-mas with bitcoin will definitely make people especially young ones curious.

It can be an avalanche of adoption, even if the price shrinks a bit (due to merchants selling).

The long term gains outweight the short term losses!

If only we can have someone like AMazon or ebay accept bitcoin, that would leikely make a lot of people pay with bitcoins. Only then we can probably have a big impact.

This is on my list for the Bitcoin Black Friday budget buy ---> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarCraft_II:_Legacy_of_the_Void ...Now to get the cheapest way to buy it.  ::)

Any suggestions welcomed.  ;D .... I do not usually spend a lot of money on Black Friday, but this year I will spoil myself a little. I hope a lot of Bitcoin merchants will sign up for

this. I will forward the link to a couple of the people I know.  ;D

We've never really seen a price drop due to increased sales.

Some merchants hold onto the BTC, some sell the next day, some sell instantly.

The volume out tends to be spread out pretty evenly, plus a lot of people buy straight BTC to give as presents/gifts!

At present, most retailers will sell their accepted bitcoin straight away through Bitpay or Coinbase. That has the effect of dumping by holders if the bitcoin spenders do not buy the spent coin through exchanges. When the spender buy from exchanges, there will be fee involved. So it is expensive for the holders. It is better if we are paid with bitcoin.

I am doing everything I can to not give in to temptations of buying anything with my Bitcoin until I feel happy with my stash. If the offer is good enough I may reconsider this tho... but not until merchants stop dumping it for fiat.

I can't believe it is that time of year again!
We will be submitting our "deal" later tonight or tomorrow.

Bitcoin Black Friday is one of our busiest weekends of the year.

We also enjoy splurging ourselves and taking advantage of some of the deals and supporting other bitcoin merchants.

Thanks Jon for organizing this each year.

I am doing everything I can to not give in to temptations of buying anything with my Bitcoin until I feel happy with my stash. If the offer is good enough I may reconsider this tho... but not until merchants stop dumping it for fiat.

I have two conundrums:
1, is how do you certify that you will not dump your BTC for fiat (at least not immediately, maybe only in small bursts after we're back to ATH)? Customers should not presume that just because they don't go through a Bitpay or Coinbase checkout that there won't be an immediate fiat dump.
2, is what offer could I actually put out for my store? I don't have a wide variety of digital goods for sale nor an instant distribution channel, everything costs random prices to ship, and I only ship to US domestic. If I put out a "10% off x" deal, I suppose that would be the minimum of what's considered "generous", but with BTC tanking more than rallying, I'd have to wait even longer to recoup that loss. If I put out a "buy at least $100 and get any item $5 or less free" that item might jump the shipping cost, so I'd have to say that the free item doesn't get free shipping. I could have a drawing for one customer to win something or other in addition to their purchase, but what would that something be?

........

Bitpay said Bitcoin Black Fridays are one of their busiest times of the year. That suggests a big share of merchants go through bitpay, who probably immediately sell their bitcoins through OTC sales. Do the OTC buyers then dump them on exchanges? If the price started dropping because of the merchants who don't go through bitpay dumping the bitpay merchants would lose profit if they didn't sell.

Last year's Bitcoin Black Friday sales surpassed expectations and highlighted the growth of bitcoin. This year, with so many more merchants now accepting bitcoin, we expect Bitcoin Black Friday to be even more successful.

Always wondered, how do you verify whether merchants are legit businesses or frauds? Do you only accept offers from established, known businesses, or do you accept any offers?

Generally businesses will have reviews associated with them. I also have done a lot of BTC shopping so I have a good idea who the legit merchants are at this point.

Past that, things to look for: real identity tied to shop, actual domain name, more than a single product, possibly funding, any press hits, and longevity.

Oh sorry, never responded.

They are not related. Some carpetbagger stole my name and is trying to cash in on the event this year. Competition is great but misleading consumers isn't.

We're the original site and have run the campaign for 4 years.

Damn, competition is a good thing but hijacking the name like that is a bit dirty move. I signed up to ".info" first as I was of impression it's the same project as in the past years.

They even started signature campaign: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1253069.0

I apologize for going off topic, but why don't you work at Ripple Labs anymore? Did you choose to leave, or are they making people redundant? Ripple's been crashing in price and I was wondering what the reason for it is, and if any insiders are Allowed to discuss it, or if they have non-disclosure agreements.

It's easy to succumb into the consumist temptation specially when we are getting closer to xmas.. but I will also stay true to my plan and that's to make as much BTC possible during this year which involves not selling any.

Or just top off your wallet with whatever amount you buy, skip spending dollars for the holiday.

It is happening already, from 320 to around 330.

But I think it is just coincidence or manipulation.

Might be people without credit cards buying BTC so they can buy things or people buying abroad and trying to avoid taxes, but I doubt.

One way or another, I would expect some dump after the Friday day

Isn't this is how it is every holiday season? They raise prices and say it is a sale when in fact it is not.
But buying with BTC does have it's perks as someone mentioned about shopping abroad and not paying taxes. Which I don't do of course.

That is just the thing, we never know what these merchants will do. I saw in another thread that over 150 merchants will be taking part in this and possibly even new retailers like Wallmart. If this happens, you would see a massive coin dump and these new companies would not hold on to their coins. They will convert everything to fiat and the price will drop. ^hmf^

I think that most people use their fiat money/cash to buy things for this black friday, after that there are the holidays at the end of the year which i doubt people will spend their bitcoins, i am saying this because the price is not good as we want to see (at least $400-$500)

If the prices were really going to get affected we would have seen some instability in the prices from today .Either going up or falling down so to expect anything could happen on the Black Friday .But since we are not seeing any possible changes don't think its going to affect the prices on Friday .

Ditto, there are some stores that are doing pre-black friday deals and seem to be skipping black friday in the US according to the news, but I guess in order to be fair in Bitcoin everyone is starting off on the same start with the same list and the same limited quanties.

What I really hate is that most of this BF lists become available on Black Friday. People don't have enough time to prepare their strategies. I like to think about my purchases or investment decisions.

I think you hit the nail on the head  with this statement... I also plan and budget way in advance before I make a big purchase decision and I shop around for the cheapest deals.

I sometimes wonder if they do this on purpose to force people to make impulsive decisions. This is one of the reasons why the USA has such a debt crisis. People are being

bombarded with aggressive marketing strategies and they buy unnecessary things on impulse. If you had time to compare prices, you could make the best decisions and you

would isolate the real deals and bargains.  :(

The reason you see a lot of conventional Black Friday deals marketed the entire week before hand is that they need to get people physically into the stores.

A lot of the cybermonday deals aren't pre-announced.

The first year I started this event I decided it was more worthwhile to announce all the deals on the day of. It provides more of an 'event' and is much easier to promote to the mainstream media.

Anyways, that's been the number one complaint I've heard this year, so next year we'll change it up a bit.

>quite surprised we actually have more than 2k merchants.

There aren't 2k merchants.

.info has been spewing that number with no basis in fact.

Last year we approached something like 3-6k merchants. We had access to most of Bitpay's merchant list and contact information, we had help from *every* payment processor to reach out to merchants.

We started months before .info even registered their knockoff website.

We got 600. Total. Less than that once you got rid of the scam sites.

I'm also guessing a majority of their 'deals' this year aren't even Bitcoin exclusive.

I just gave the number i saw on their website .The more the merchants the better chances of us getting the deals so its a good thing for us buyers.

Is anyone else just going to hold? I feel like buying, but then I regret buying because I don't have many BTC, and I feel like buying some product with gold, thats why I tend to hold.

Buy with bitcoin and than buy the bitcoin back the day after.

That way you can benefit both from cheaper stuff and still having your coins again afterwards.

As a consumer I like that there are 2 sites.  More chance I won't miss out on any deals.  We will see which site is better tomorrow.  I wish there was early access.

Will the merchant list be up at midnight EST?

Ours will be, or around then. Might be an hour or two delayed depending on how it goes.

I was hoping to see more mayor retail stores getting in on the Bitcoin action, but it seems as though it's only the "alternative" merchants taking advantage of this event. Other than Gyft,

I do not see some mind blowing deals. The Trezor deal sounds interesting, but I am not sure what they offering. { $79.5 for two... or $79.5 each, if you buy 2 } Sorry if I am a bit slow

today, but I had very little sleep lately. Anyone bought something from any of these retailers?

Nothing mind blowing.  mostly 10-20% off.  One stores coupon code didn't work.  I like the original site better then the new .info one.

The .info one is a scam: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1266987.0 and is not owned by the people behind the .com domain.

Anyway, there are a few good deals that I consider buying. The 50% on BTC Trinkets for example or the NFC Ring. Sweet stuff!

EDIT: The CSS needs a little bit of work though:

That is designed to give all merchants a better chance at higher placement. Don't want to shaft some unlucky bloke who gets stuck at the bottom.

I have been using Bitcoin for only 2 years and I love to see what Black Friday sales there are. The sales are great and you can save a lot of money. I was just wondering whether purse.io has any Black Friday sales.

That's a pretty good idea.  Seems like a good time to reach out to merchants to employ accepting BTC.  I mean, they want to make all the money they possibly can, right?

Yeah.... definitely. I think Bitcoin is becoming more popular and more stores are accepting Bitcoin. Black Friday sales will also help stores that accept Bitcoin, as more people will buy their products.

This is new hope and new duty for bitcoin user :
"More focus on advertising to the Bitcoin community. This year we're going to triple our efforts to get the word out about Bitcoin Black Friday to Bitcoin consumers. Hopefully the price bump will get people ready to spend some BTC and support our merchants."

It has possibly something to do with your website and listed inventory (quickly went through it; however it is quite unfortunate that you had no sales). I've bought only from a single merchant there. Almost all other purchases were on Amazon using gift cards (bought by Bitcoin).

a gyft card.
Mostly these.

Box of cigs from dutyfree with 20% discount.

Tbh I didn't have enough time to go through all the offers. Would be great if next year the offers are published at least one day in advance.

We got the last of the orders completed at 2:00am last night. All are now dropped off at the post office.
(Except 1 international order that we are waiting to hear back from the customer on).

We had 11 bitcoin orders from November 1-26.
November 27-28 we had 38 orders.  Most of the Bitcoin Black Friday orders were larger than average.
