I don't think the Bitcoiner lost any money. The scam happens when some 3rd guy gets suckered into buy something (sight unseen) and then is told to pay the person with bitcoins, and the person with bitcoins send said bitcoins to the person selling the "something". The 3rd guy never gets whatever it is he thought he was buying and then goes to the bitcoiner to get his money back.
