Title: Mount 4 GPUs on extenders
Post by: Nolo on November 16, 2012, 06:45:22 PM
I need a quick cheap solution to mount 4 GPUS on extenders above the motherboard.  Only requirements are that it is cheap and stable.  One GPU must remain in the motherboard, so any kind of rack over the motherboard must be atleast tall enough to pass over that one.

I'm a visual guy so pictures would be great.  All I've found searching the forum are a bunch of custom made aluminum type setups.  Not really looking to put that much time or effort into this.  Something out of wood or something that is already premade would be preferable.

I made a frame out of wood... I then drilled holes on each side of the wood using rubber covered garden stakes to hold up the cards...

Give me a minute and I'll show you a picture..

How do you keep the cards from falling over?  Are they stable just sitting there on that stake?

yeah the wiring from the PSU seems to help

there are notches on the cards that allow it to sit well..  the reference design with the wide flat bottom are a lot better.. There is a non reference on each end. One is laying down and the other is angled against the wood at the end. (I moved it to take the pic)

The cheapest I have seen was a wire dish rack from Target. Something like $15 and you are done.

If I can find the thread again I will edit.

This cost me $3 for the stakes... the rest I had kicking around... Each rack thing supports 2 rigs... was quick and easy.. :)

I just made an open air rig from some 1" wood I had laying around from the crate my snowblower came in. It basically looks like this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=29729.0;all, but all wood. The bottom sheet it just some 1/4" plywood that I put standoffs in to mount the MB. Cost me nothing and took under an hour to cut, assemble and mount hardware in.

Nice. ^ I did pretty much the same thing.. using chunks of 2x3's and some plywood. Was quick and cheap.. tapered rubber washers work good for mounting the motherboard.

I thought about that, and then just zip tying the cards to it.  But I'm concerned about the metal of the rack hitting the cards.

The dish racks are covered in white plastic, should be fine if it is pristine. No shorts.

there was a set of three wire plate holders at walmart I believe for like 10 bucks similar to these http://www.walmart.com/ip/Honey-Can-Do-Stackable-Kitchen-Shelving-Organizer-Rack-16-x-10/20519594 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Honey-Can-Do-Stackable-Kitchen-Shelving-Organizer-Rack-16-x-10/20519594) they are three differerent sizes ones a little too small. Thats what I used until I upgraded to this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Plano-4-Shelf-Ventilated-Shelving-Unit/16517557 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Plano-4-Shelf-Ventilated-Shelving-Unit/16517557) Which holds 6 rigs just fine with room for switches on top. Then all you need is some large cable ties

That's about what is to happen to mining profits at block 210,000 for those with GPUs.

Unless you are paying $0.07 per kWh or less, you might want to reconsider before adding any more GPUs.

This is what I decided to go with.  Works great, was cheap, $7 at Walmart, and is very stable.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

that is the exact one I have, wonder why its not on their website. just in case you are wondering I haven't seen any plastic chip off of mine, I'm sure it could happen eventually but nothing to be concerned about unless you move your system all the time

That's what I used to do.  If you want to make it even more stable, buy a cheap coil of cooking twine or metal wire, wrap it around one side then loop it around the top of each backplate where the screw notches are and back down to the other side of the rack.  Makes them crazy sturdy.
