Title: [DOWN] Paysius and Coinapult Down temporarily due to server glitch
Post by: evoorhees on November 17, 2012, 12:45:25 AM
Hey all,

We've had a hard drive problem with the server running certain services for Paysius merchant processing and Coinapult. These service will likely be down for 12-24 hrs.

  • Paysius merchants - customers will not be able to checkout with Bitcoin, and you won't be able to pull out funds until this is fixed.
  • Coinapult web services are working, but it is not connected to a wallet so funds won't move until this is fixed.
  • However, Coinapult orders through BitInstant that are "direct to Bitcoin address" are all fine, they aren't affected and you can still use this service via BitInstant as normal.

To allay any concerns, all customer funds are on cold wallets and in no danger. We're just in "this doesn't work" mode for a while. We'll update here when we get this resolved and we apologize for the inconveniences caused.

Thank you all kindly for your patience.

-Erik and Ira

Hard drive is secure, and I'm moving funds to cold storage temporarily. Will have to cleanse everything, get a new server and reload the production system. Everything is safe and sound, though. :)

Corrupted wallet.dat + hacker girlfriend = win

All of the funds are safe, on a new wallet, on a new server. I'm in the process of recovering the data from the (also corrupted) database, so that the new server can have entirely up to date info. Should be back online tomorrow.

Ouch!  That should never be necessary.  Remember the three ways to avoid loosing data: Backups, backups and backups.  :)

Backups can only be so recent. The wallet goes through hundreds of addresses a day, and it is impossible to back up all of the private keys. The backup I did have would have sufficed to recover the majority of funds.

Erm... no...

Although I guess you call it off-site mirroring or something like that if it happens real-time.  Which IMHO is a minimal requirement for a payment infrastructure.  Not that I expect it to be implemented in even a minority of bitcoin-related sites.  But it should be.

How about pregenerating a shitload of key pairs?

You could also use the Electrum model where you can safely generate deterministic addresses with a master public key and only 1 backup is necessary.

The new server is up, and the blockchain is downloading. I am considering (leaning toward, as well) electrum for the future, but wanted to restore service ASAP. Should be back up later today.

Paysius's API is back up. I'm just double checking the database against all of the manual withdrawals I processed during the outage, then I'll bring the websites back up.
