Title: Do you know your own Bitcoin address?
Post by: krumblez on November 22, 2015, 11:35:48 PM
Ok that sounds like a silly question, but what I mean to say is do you know it all, in your head - could you write down the full address with no errors?

I have several vanity addresses and of course know the primary details but not the rest, including upper / lower case and number sequences.

I have been thinking about this lately and just wanted to put it out there  ;D

I have hundreds of bitcoin addresses.  I tend to use a new address for every transaction.

No.  I don't have any of them memorized.  There would be no good reason to do so.

for safety reasons i prefer to use many bitcoin address' so i don't simply rely on 1 bitcoin address.
i remember back in the days when we use to have to remember so many telephone numbers... now i can't even remember my own brother's number because it's stored on our phones.. a little off topic but whatever lol
god damn technology!

i have a QR code on the back of my business cards..
easy to hand out and easy for recipients to scan.. rather then hand typing the lengthy address..

writing out the lengthy address is soo old school. something not really done in the 21st century of camera's or copy&paste.

but the other question you can ask.. does anyone know their entire credit/debit card number off by heart.. i think you will get the same low percentage of people saying yes

I only remember the first 5 or 6 exact characters of my most used addresses (cold wallets). Remembering a complete address is not something I can, nor am I interested in it.

i only know like the first characters and the last 5ish characters,i have them in mind incase i accidently pasted the wrong address.
its a good way to check.

Definitely not. I've had a lot of address in the past. I've even had a vanity one 1Lauda something which I had lost access to and created another one with that starting word sequence. It's pretty hard to memorize a single one, unless you're really trying to do that.

I remember at most few letters of addresses i use most, but there was whole lot of them and i never used one that long so i could remember more than that lol. Anyway, best practice would be to we use address only once.

I do not remember it by heart, but can more or less recognize my main address if I see it written somewhere. Perhaps it would not be so bad an idea to memorize it though.

Funny question, it's hard to memorize your own Bitcoin address.
But I believe if you often practice, surely you will be able to memorize it. :)

I don't know it off hand.
I use a web wallet so it changes frequently so trying to memorize it would be useless to me.

No, of course I could not.
That's why copy and paste and backups are for, so no need to memorize things, unless as training in a memorization course

yes its a silly question, but interesting..we all know that bitcoin address have so many letters and combine with number.human brain will hard to remember it quickly, even i believe its still possible.but in this case,we all dont need to remember it and can write without error.we ussualy remember 3 or 4 final digit of address, like "GJKL"  and its help me to mark my address,so i can know it when on bitcoin address row.

I don't know mine off hand, however I keep what I can recorded on a piece of paper (a habit of excessive amounts of paperwork in my daily job). I also use 15 to 20 addresses per month so it would be near impossible to remember them all. Hell, I can barely keep track of people's names.

I have many addresses too and I barely know the first two characters. I remember once got confused between two addresses that start with the same characters since i used to know the last char too.

I know the first 3 and last 3 characters of my 5-10 most used addresses. There is an incredible number of addresses out there-- might as well use a new one for every transaction :D

I'm not sure if there would be much of a reason to... If I were relying solely on memory, I would be afraid of messing it up, anyway. It's nice to have something to crosscheck with.  :P

I remember first number. So I'm like others here, who will remember all this numbers, letters.. its a bit difficult. As someone said here before 20 years we had all phone numbers in head, now its problem to remember any number all is memorized. Anyway nice question, I'm curious is anyone here learned his address. I doubt there is such person, but I will watch this topic and check from time to time will someone like that appear.

Title: Re: Do you know your own Bitcoin address?

I don't even know my own mobile phone number because I never ring it. If someone asks me for it I have to get my phone out and look it up. As for bitcoin addresses I try to use a new one for each deposit, except for on exchanges that won't let you change your address. Those few exchange addresses are too difficult to remember so I have to be extremely careful verifying I'm sending to the correct address.

Hope my entry into this scene will prove profitable for me.. ;)

I don't remember by Bitcoin address but what I do know is the 1st 3 characters and last 3 characters. I don't plan to memorize the whole address as it will just be a reason to make a mistake when forwarding your address to someone.

i use one credit card all the time to buy things online.. i have the numbers memorized.  actually several people i know, know their credit card number by heart.  it just saves time if you shop online alot.  and yes i know i should be buying everything with bitcoin not credit cards, but that time is just not here yet.

also theres no point to know your bitcoin address.. on the other hand if you could memorize your private key, thats a different story.

FYI, If you do remember first few characters of your bitcoin address,  blockonomics (https://www.blockonomics.co) has a handy feature to search vanity addresses (supports prefixes of 4-10 characters).

quite interesting question. No, i don't even know 5 word of my bitcoin address. I manage to remember atleast first two and last two letter of my most used bitcoin address.

Title: Re: Do you know your own Bitcoin address?

I don't think we need to remember the whole bitcoin address. What I normally do is to remember the first 5 and the last 4  characters of it, to make sure I send the correct address to the senders, or send to the correct address. That is enough.

I'm not sure if anyone remembers the first 10 characters of his address :P

Why would someone do that? Except if he wanted to be a human wallet?

I know the very first and very last letter of my main addy... Offcourse i don't know all letters of all addresses i ever used...

Offcourse, when you create a vanity address, it might be easyer to remember more letters, but i think there's a danger in using these, since a malicious user might create an address with the same starting letters in order to confuse you or somebody that has to send you some coins

Not really for what comes to me , I have my address (with blockchain.info) on my Bookmarks so when I need I just go there but I most of the time I know the first four/five characters of my address (In case I have that kind of virus that paste another address when you copy yours or something) It can be useful to remember a little part of your address sometimes  .

I was always told that you shouldn't really ever use a bitcoin address twice, for security and privacy reasons.

Quote from Bitcoin wiki  "Address reuse refers to the use of the same address for multiple transactions. It is an unintended practice, abusing the privacy and security of the participants of the transactions as well as future holders of their value. It also only functions by accident, not by design, so cannot be depended on to work reliably"

Okay. I will try to type up my old address which I used for about a year. 1Kok3 ... K ... 3? Okay. Now I check my wallet and this is the full address 1K3JttmxEQkKZGvdm9pSm6Rx8R42ftKok3. Haha. I misplaced the letter and only managed to remember six characters.

Now. Let's try my current Bitcoin address - using it since September. 1JTKing ... vs. Only manage to remember the first five characters which is vanity and last two. Full address is 1JTKingdNGmCfbP8HCbhenoxRQuy8tqZvs. :(.

right question for all bitcoins user.
since all users of bitcoin uses many number of bitcoin adress.
but anone don't know their bitcoin adress .
your question is right at your place .
but it is not necessary that we know bitcoin address .
but always take care that we know our wallet identifier and password , because without acess of bitcoin wallet ....no use of adress

Correct. It would be much more useful if someone learns their private key rather than Bitcoin address. In case that something really bad goes down, knowing your address will not help you do anything. Knowing your private key will.

I think that's quite a task to remember ones bitcoin address from head. Creating a brain wallet is quite easy compared to this. However in this technological age copy/paste is just a mouse click away. Even when I have no access to my computer or phone I could quite easily backtrack my address from blockchain.

This is why back up and copy - paste was invented, so you can just copy things and paste. You do not need to memorize. But I do recognize my wallet address when I see it. I know the first and last 3 characters.

um... i think thats mnemonic passphrase ::)
That's totally different than bitcoin address, we can just copy and paste the address while the mnemonic is one time show only so you need to write it down

Anyway, i don't fully remember my address I only remember the 2 first words and the 2 last words of my address :P
Remembering that is completely useless because bitcoin address itself are made to be hard to be remembered :P

Even if I had only one Bitcoin address I wouldn't know it letter by letter. But I have used hundreds of them already. Actually, oddly enough, some of them stick in your memory for some reason, not the exact address but rather an image of it.

Only the last letter of few of my adresses :>

Only the last letter I was hoping that everyone only look the beginning of the Bitcoin address.

For me I am trying to remember my first Baby (First Bitcoin address) that was my first why I started with Bitcoin.

Everyone should remember something about ther first Bitcoin what they have.

Yes the original question was silly, but a very interesting thread ensued, for the record I do not remember my most used addresses but can recognise them due to some small character sequences, seems the same for a majority of people here. I did not think before that memorising the private key would be more useful, and far more difficult too!

I have hundreds of bitcoin addresses.  I tend to use a new address for every transaction.

No.  I don't have any of them memorized.  There would be no good reason to do so.

This ^^^

But I have about 20 odd addresses.

No point memorising public addresses. Maybe memorise a few private keys if you destroy the paper wallets but I wouldn't trust myself to remember them

Even with my very first bitcoin, I could remember only the first (actually 2nd one) and last letters. Now I realize I mostly notice and confirm my addresses with these 2 letters when I submit on a faucet too.
If anyone share the need to remember a bitcoin address, I may try to do so. But I'm not sure how long it may be recalled exactly.

If an address has a meaning by reading it then i would memorize it in my head.
But as bitcoin address are hard to memorize and have lots of different characters i don't know exactly.
To have it everywhere i might save it on the phone or in my physical wallet as a business card.

It is so difficult to memorise bitcoin address even if it was a custom address because it contains only random litters with upper and lower cases and numbers
I know only my first and last two litters in my address

I know the prefixes (up to first 5 characters) of my most commonly used addresses,
that way I can recognize them fast out of a bigger pool/when digging on blockchain.

But full addresses or the ones I only used once/change addresses,
Nope. Why would I? ::)

I remembered the first 4 and last 4 digits. This is very usefull for when entering your address for a payment receivement.

The same habit i have for sending payment. Then i double check those 8 digits and voila.. not ever did i sent to wrong address.

When you have a dozen addresses to keep everything in memory becomes quite a difficult task. Modern gadgets are corrupting the user in some extent because we rely too much on them.

I could if I wanted to, but there's no sense in populating your memory palace with trivial stuff (at least for me). I try and keep mine tidy, airy and to a bare minimum. It just feels so much lighter without all the clutter you would otherwise pick up everyday  ;)

And to complicate it further, the upper cases are also matter. I recently tried to type my address manually instead of copy and pasting as usual and I discovered that the site keeps saying my wallet is not valid just because I mistype one letter in lower case while it should be on upper case. Hence, someone who could rewrite their address without mistake must be . . . dedicate their live only to remember their address  ;D

If you can memory your Bitcoin address it can only mean one thing: You are doing it wrong. You must always generate a new account each time, so this gives no chance to memorize it whatsoever.

If you want to memorize something (for peace of mind I guess) - just memorize a seed and use that to generate addresses. Problem solved - you have infinite addresses available. Honestly, I don't really bother - I have enough back-ups as it is and they are all secured well enough for me not to worry.

We can't remember all the used Bitcoin wallet addresses because simply we use more than one usually and it's the safest method to don't risk anything while making our transactions with Bitcoin online

Ok that sounds like a silly question, but what I mean to say is do you know it all, in your head - could you write down the full address with no errors?

I have several vanity addresses and of course know the primary details but not the rest, including upper / lower case and number sequences.

I have been thinking about this lately and just wanted to put it out there  ;D
i believe that there was people who can do this, that people must be have a strong memorize. but i also believe if we try to remember it,we can do it. write down our bitcoin address without any error, maybe you can try to remember some characters for a day.

For each transaction you should have new address, because bitcoin is not anonymous (http://www.bitcoinisnotanonymous.com/). So you can have potentially hundreds or thousands of addresses. It would be difficult to remember them.

if you are using online wallets then i think it is no use to remember your bitcoin address as they are using multi address technology which created every new address after we do new transactions , ya but if you are using hardware wallet then i think we can remember it. but nowadays so new technology has come that we can store it and use it any where without remembering it.
