Title: 'Disable editing" option?
Post by: pawel7777 on November 24, 2015, 12:56:37 PM
Just an idea for the new forum (but it might be as well implemented to the current one):

Add 'disable editing' option in 'additional options' when starting new topic - to prevent editing replies.

It could be very useful for any contests or bounty topics as it would prevent any possible abuse.

Editing/deleting replies is already disabled in Markeplace/Auctions board, but it could be made optional for all the other boards.

Yes your opinion may be useful But also sometimes it may be not useful if such thing occurs..
For example : If you win a Giveaway and u are asked to post your btc address.. or u just have to post ur btc address for some trade purposes and if u post a wrong address by mistake (and u cant edit it ) and the person sends btc to the wrong address then it will create many issues for you.

So sometimes , Editing option is very useful in such cases or might be there are many other cases too.
So i dont think if there is a reason to make such changes in the forum ! )))

If this option is not suitable for specific topic (i.e. giveaway)- then you just don't use it.

In the example you used, you can always make another post with correct BTC address or just pm the topic starter (OP).

I thought of this option when I saw this topic (explain Bitcoin in one sentence. BTC1 bounty:

It's quite easy to abuse. You could create few newbie accounts, reply with anything, wait until someone posts something real good, then just steal their idea (possibly slightly change it) by editing your previous post(s) increasing your chances of winning.
Even if somehow you get caught, just abandon newly created account.

Hariom didn't understand what your point was. You aren't suggesting that editing gets disabled permanently but rather that it becomes an option for topic starters. I kind of agree; I wouldn't mind and it would certainly come in handy in some situations. Should this get implemented, I think that a 5-10 minute window should be left for editing the post (after it has been made) so that people have time to correct mistakes/format/grammar/etc.

As far as i know there is a limit to 10 minutes and after that if you try to edit a underline under the time is showed, if you want to be strict then ignore edited posts, that's it for now, but your idea is good when creating topic with unique 'rules'

AFAIK the grace period is 5 minutes.

Edit: Pretty sure it was around 5 minutes in the past. And this wasn't a competition :).

Well AFAIK it is 10 minutes and let's see who wins :P, try to edit your post after 5 minutes and after 9 minutes and then after 10 minutes and see the difference, i should win :)

I believe the new forum software is already going to track every single edit.  As a user you will be able to see every version of each post.

Something like facebook comment editing? It'll shows the last edited history only. If the comment was edited more than twice, we still can see the last edited comment only.

But new forum should have all edited history and/with some time limit to edit the posts ::)

I agree , it could be very useful in some occasions like "Stake your address" for example , without the need of people quoting your replies in case they get edited later however when we enter the topic these information should be available like if we can edit our posts or not ...
Till now .. I don't know how I'm supposed to know if a reply has been edited or not .. so these kind of info should be visible to public .

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that underlined date thing.

If so, I guess that would do the trick. Although I personally dislike the idea of tracking every change, making it optional could be better imo.
