Title: Ingress Augmented Reality
Post by: naypalm on November 18, 2012, 04:20:51 AM
I'm surprised to not see a post about Google's new Augmented Reality Game, Ingress. http://www.ingress.com

http://www.rpad.tv/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Google-Ingress.jpg

So whos playing it? Which side is everyone on? Enlightened or Resistance?

Game Description from Google Play:

Quote
Ingress transforms the real world into the landscape for a global game of mystery, intrigue, and competition.

Our future is at stake. And you must choose a side.

A mysterious energy has been unearthed by a team of scientists in Europe. The origin and purpose of this force is unknown, but some researchers believe it is influencing the way we think. We must control it or it will control us.

“The Enlightened” seek to embrace the power that this energy may bestow upon us.

“The Resistance” struggle to defend, and protect what’s left of our humanity.

Install Ingress and transform your world.

The World is the Game
Move through the real world using your Android device and the Ingress app to discover and tap sources of this mysterious energy. Acquire objects to aid in your quest, deploy tech to capture territory, and ally with other players to advance the cause of the Enlightened or the Resistance.

Strategy
The struggle is being played out globally. Track the progress of players around the world, plan your next steps, and communicate with others using an Intelligence map.

What is the Niantic Project?
Is this just a game? An Investigation Board (http://www.nianticproject.com) filled with cryptic clues and secret codes awaits. The story evolves everyday. Powerful secrets and game tech are there to be unlocked.

Form Alliances
The struggle to save the planet spans the entire world. Groups of people acting together can be more effective than individuals acting alone. Cooperation across neighborhoods, cities, and countries will be needed to achieve the ultimate victory.

NOTE: This app is optimized for smartphones, not tablets.

It seems like a cool thing to pass the time. Reminds me of the old Google Buzz feature of Google Maps except your attacking and haxing your enemy's virtual structures in-game.

A buddy of mine started up a website (http://www.enlightened.co) devoted to the Enlightened side, feel free to join. I won't have much free time the next few days but I'll hop on when I can.

Invite yourself.

You can get an invite by waiting in an IRC, more details here: http://www.enlightened.co/index.php/topic,5.msg9.html#msg9

They need to put it on the iphone so people can actually play it.

I heard that an app is in the works for iOS devices. If it were me, I'd go buy a cheap compatible tablet to play on.

I gave it 8 hours or so, waiting in IRC is pretty hit and miss. I'll have to wait for open beta I guess. Game looks awesome.

Current player counts are totaling 2.7 Million. It was only about 250k two days ago!

They must be handing out more invites hopefully from the main site. http://www.ingress.com

I also found http://www.ingressinvites.com but I am usually weary of giving my email out to an unknown website.

I read that invites drop for hacking portals...I have been insanely busy for the last few days, I will try to make some Ingress art soon I guess. If you get any invites to pass on in-game, I'll owe you one.

You having fun? I heard it uses a lot of battery...I have a couple of 8000ma portable powerpacks for just such an occasion.

From what I've seen there's a bunch of people trying to get in, and several people enjoying the view from the inside.

The best way I've seen to get an invite if you have talent is to post art on G+ for the people running the show to see and they're handing out invites on that basis as said. I've signed up for ingressinvites.com but since it was only this morning I haven't heard back yet

Right now there are over 16 Million players so the invites are getting out there.

Someone figured out how to grab stats from Ingress but google already shut them down.

So I'll just leave this here: http://uberbills.tk/ingress-example.php

I can already see people hopping on a plane to a certain country just to help out the side they're on! :P

Showing well over 16M Enlightened and 18M Resistance, and I'm a bit surprised at how far off the two teams are. From what I've seen there's plenty of people in and plenty of people still waiting to get in. Still waiting on mine though, hopefully it rolls out sooner or later.

I am curious where the intersection of Ingress and bitcoin will end up being.  The items are non-transferable, so there can't easily be a bitcoin market for it.  Maybe ingress itself will end up with it's own alt-coin (but I hope not).  Perhaps the bitcoin blockchain can be used to transfer items or something like that.

Interesting...

Technically, the items are transferable. You can drop them and have someone pick them up...

It's just against the terms to sell items...
