Title: Re: the current reward system is wrong for solo mining
Post by: Stephen Gornick on June 06, 2011, 10:11:10 PM
Up until a few months ago solo mining was sensible.  That no longer is the case.  The current version of the Bitcoin client software no longer has a "generate" option so it is no longer the case that a new user can mistakenly assume that you just click the checkbox and wait for bitcoins to appear.

Those investing the time into mining will learn within the first minutes of research that if mining a pool is the only prudent route for all except the largest mining operations.

Bitcoin isn't a project to distribute money to miners.  It is a project to create a decentralized digital currency, of which miners are an integral component.  Few will disagree that at the present time the compensation for participation in mining is at least "adequate" in relation to the amount of time and expense it requires to  be a miner.

People love lottery tickets. With solo mining you get a steady stream of them ($1000!).

You shouldn't rely on lottery tickets to pay your electricity bills. Just an advice!  ;D

hmm, so how reliable is the statement of this skript telling me with 340mh/s i will mine 18,32BC a month?
and let's say the difficulty stays the same.

or can it be like roulette? you can bet on red with a chance of 50:50
and the next 12 rounds black wins

Exactly.  It's all probability, though statistically you are likely to earn more or less that amount, assuming no difficulty changes.  However, do note that I've only ever seen the difficulty decrease a rare few times.
