Title: Trump faces backlash from both parties after call to bar Muslims entering US

Jeb Bush and Chris Christie join Democrats in denouncing proposal – but Ted Cruz stops short of criticizing Republican frontrunner

Donald Trump’s proposal to ban all Muslim entry into the US, including that of tourists and Muslim Americans overseas, was met with an immediate and massive backlash from across the political spectrum.

Republican presidential candidates moved quickly to condemn their party’s frontrunner, with Jeb Bush describing Trump as “unhinged” and Lindsey Graham calling on everyone seeking the presidency to denounce the plan. Even former vice-president Dick Cheney, as the Republican establishment began to chime in, told a conservative radio host the call “goes against everything we believe in”.

“Donald Trump today took xenophobia and religious bigotry to a new level,” Graham told the Guardian in an interview shortly after Trump unveiled his proposal.

“His comments are hurting the war effort and putting our diplomats and soldiers serving in the Middle East at risk. The way to win this war is to reach to the vast majority of people in Islamic faith who reject Isil and provide them the capability to resist this ideology.”

The mayor of St Petersburg in Florida, Rick Kriseman, said he was banning Trump from the city “until we fully understand the dangerous threat posed by all Trumps”.

New Jersey governor Chris Christie said Trump’s comments reflected “a ridiculous position and one that won’t even be productive”.

“We do not need to resort to that type of activity nor should we,” Christie told conservative radio show host Michael Medved. “We need to cooperate with peaceful Muslim Americans who want to give us intelligence against those who are radicalized.”

‘This Will Be The End Of Trump’s Campaign,’ Says Increasingly Nervous Man For Seventh Time This Year

SALISBURY, MD—Repeating identical comments he had made in June, July, August, September, and twice in November, increasingly nervous local man Aaron Howe responded to Donald Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. Monday by once again stating this would be the end of the Republican frontrunner’s campaign, sources confirmed. “Well, that’s it—you just can’t say those kinds of things and expect to be taken seriously any longer,” said an anxious Howe, his voice quavering slightly as he spoke aloud the very same words he had previously uttered in reaction to remarks about Mexicans, women, the disabled, former POW John McCain, and a number of other targeted parties. “That’s the final nail in the coffin right there. There’s no way he’s coming back from this one.” At press time, a visibly tense Howe was steadily amassing the angst and exasperation that would be unleashed in his seventh expletive-filled exclamation of the year when he catches sight of the newest set of GOP poll numbers.

I don't know why the media is selectively targeting Trump. The other politicians have said far worse. Remember the speech by John McCain, when he claimed that the father of Chelsea Clinton is Janet Reno? It's not like I completely ignore the possibility of Janet Reno being Chelsea's father, but why was the media silent back then?

The answer as to "the media" is groupthink.

The answer as to targeting of Trump is money.  Things he would do would destroy many lucrative Washington deals that benefit both parties.
