Just look at different gas prices around the world.

It will give you an idea of how far a US $1 will go in that part of the world.

In West Tennessee, I know of homes that rent for $200/mo and you're not that far from the nearest Walmart. If one's a smoker, than that's about a $300/mo habit, therefore it's best to not smoke or, for that matter, alcohol or drugs. Raise some chickens, rabbits, and goats, and hunt and fish. Bottom line is that it can be done here in the US. In fact, I was just informed the other day about a campground near me that rents space for only $200/month and that includes electric. Just park you trailer/RV and... Hmmmm! Sounds like a great place to set up a rig or three.

Good to know all the money printing hasn't hit home yet.

Life in the city really is a rip off, for all the extra amenities it does bring hither.

Even in the US, if you take half of that, and invest it up front in a few acres, a small house and some animals somewhere outside a small town in middle America with a decent grocery store nearby, $15 a day would be enough to keep the internet on.  I have no doubt you can find a better deal outside the US.

Not in Auckland, you can't. I lived in the Auckland YMCA once, though, and the rent for a cubicle-sized room was $165-170 per week at the time. Right there slap back in the centre of Auckland. I commuted, often on foot, to/from SKYCITY about four nights a week and ground out a (very marginal!) living, such as it was, playing poker. Sometimes I didn't have a NZ visa but I split my time about evenly between Australia and NZ, and became very well known/recognised among the Australasian gaming crowd for a small-time hustler, that is. Oh, to have those simple (not so simple?) days back again! :)

My friends have told me Thailand is good value by western standards.

In the Caribbean you can live cheaply by plucking fruit from the trees - at least until someone gets annoyed at you or wants to rob you and thus hacks your head off with a machete. ;D

Define "live on".  Are we assuming living somewhere permanently or living there temporarily (like the whole back-packing through Asia thing)?  Are we talking about people who are debt-free?  Talking about staying in hotels/hostels or renting a home?  Running a car or using other means of transport?  Including the cost of getting there or not?  What - specifically - do you intend that $30 per day covering?

There are plenty of places in China where you can live comfortably for that amount of money.

Even in a big city like Beijing it is not hard to rent a small apartment in a central location for around 3000 RMB per month (which works out to around $16 per day) and you can eat well here for around 50 RMB per day (around $8).

You have nothing but what you are wearing and a voucher for a one way trip to anywhere on the planet.

You magically gain the equivalent of $30 USD worth of purchasing power once per day, wherever you end up.

Where do you go?

SE Asia (including Indonesia).  Some of the Pacific Islands also have a low cost of living if you're living like a local but are expensive if you're living there as a tourist.  You could live extremely well in Tonga for $30 per day if you leased a property rather than back-packing.

I'm not familiar with South America myself, but I believe there are parts of South America where you can live very well for very little (by Western standards) as well.

This. Assuming you don't splurge on cigarettes or other money wasting stuff, you could do reasonably well here at Malaysia, Thailand, The Philippines and probably Singapore. Note that $900 a month at Malaysia is the average wage of a fresh graduate with 3-4 years of experience. You probably couldn't get a house/apartment at the major cities though.

Actually in China cigarettes are dirt cheap (popular local brands go for 5 RMB per pack which is less < $1) as is alcohol (provided you don't buy it in bars which are comparatively expensive).

Also I've met people who have successfully "couch surfed" in Beijing - so I guess you can spend your whole $30 on food, booze and cigarettes if you really want to. :)

That's $900 a month, you'll live with that comfortably to very comfortably in most ex-communist/ex-USSR countries.
In Ukraine the average wage is about $300; OTOH in Poland the avg wage is about $1000 (definitely enough if you live alone but might be difficult to support a family with this money in the capital city and ride a car (fuel is expensive and heavily taxed)).

With one of these, you could live wherever you park, and enjoy touring the US, or whatever country, at the same time on $30 a day. It would be best if you didn't smoke or owned a pet, but if you did, you'll still do pretty well. If you're a writer, you can even monetize the adventure.

It is costing me less than $30 to live on my sailboat. I'm traveling from Daytona beach to key west and its costing about $15 a day for two people, food, and fuel when we can't sail. And this is in America.

I'm not sure about comfort but we have shower and water and solar power and television and stolen wifi from time to time :)

Living alone and with the home paid for, living on $30 a day in about 85% of the US is doable. One would not even have to own a piece of property or lease a space if they found somebody who needed a constant eye on some place and you offer to do it for free, thus only paying for electric, phone, and wi-fi--the essentials. You could own a used fuel-efficient auto to save some bucks there, only borrowing or renting a truck when you need to move to a new location. Insurance and food would be your other main expenses. Simply budget for entertainment.

Chances are you'll have to work to earn your $900 a month, but that shouldn't be any problem whatsoever. One can do that part time, and still have plenty of time to do other things, like sleep.

The bottom line is that one doesn't need a big home to live comfortably.

Cigs and alcohol are taxed heavily(200%++) here in Singapore and Malaysia though. Apparently the gov imposes those taxes and uses the proceedings to set up more healthcare services. The irony..

Indeed - with mostly no free healthcare and having so "darn many people" I think that the PRC government is not overly worried about people smoking and drinking themselves to oblivion. ;)

I tried to clear this up in an earlier post:

He claims you can live rather opulently.

Neither of us really know much about other places & the conversation started as "I hear you can live real good overseas for like, nothing."

I realize $1000 a month is a regular living to a lot of folk... but for this particular conversation,
Basically he is claiming resort style living is possible. Sipping drinks on the beach while some local bbq's him dinner and another gives him a foot rub kinda deal.

I was wondering how close to that you could realistically get.

seems like a long shot.. possibly if you owned a house and had $30 per day to live on, on top of the place to live.

Yeah, that's what some people here seem to miss.

4 person family living off of $120 dollars a day (or $80, someone mentioned a family spending $20 per person) and already owning a house is not the same as living alone with $30/day and not owning a house (especially in countries with a very high HDI and trying to live the aforementioned 'resort style living').

It depends on how you live. My sister-in-law and her husband live on about $70 per day per person, have a housing cost less than half mine, but still complain about being out of money every month.

Alright, I'll try a more serious answer this time. After deciding what factors are important to you (cost of living, lifestyle, mentality, violent crime rates, political stability, language, diversity), you should look not into latest data for each country, but at trends in the data. Gapminder.org is a good start, and so is the CIA World Factbook (with some manual processing of their older editions).

I go hike a trail. You know, a long one, like the Appalachian trail. Backpacking is fun, 30 bucks a day buys more than enough trail food, hikers are nice, and every 100 miles or so there's a family that takes thru-hikers in for a day (shower, hot meal, actual mattress, porcelain, etc). You just have to talk to the other hikers to find those places.

I vouch for eastern europe, too. While living from 750 euros monthly is not exactly about lying on the beach whole day and getting all inclusive full service, it's still pretty cosy here in Slovakia. Farther to the east you go, the better. We are no third world countries, most things work as expected (don't expect fake smiles everywhere, though) and internet is fast and uncensored (I have unlimited 10mbit both download and upload for 12 euro/month, could easily get 100 mbit for few bucks more if desired).
