I'm wanting to invest around $5k USD in bitcoin, primarily just to get cash out of my bank. I've had a Coinbase account for about a year but only used it for a few small transactions, so I'm not very knowledgeable about it.

With the recent surge in price, do you think now would be a good or bad time to buy? I realize there's no way to know for sure what will happen, but am curious if you think the price is going to drop back down soon or if I should buy in now before it rises more.

No one could give you precise prediction for the price movement. Probably it will continue to rise or drop down instantly. This is drawback of bitcoin, volatile price. I suggest you could buy 1k dollar now. Wait and see what will happen. If it continue rising 10%, you could buy 1k dollar again. If it goes in another direction, you could get a good chance to lower you holding cost.

not, if you are aiming at 1k usd to sell or higher, it's up to you and your target, there are no bad time to buy unless we are at a very high value, and we can clearly see that the price will not increase farther

Nobody can answer this question. We can only look at the circumstances in the whole Bitcoin ecosystem and right now theses circumstances are more than positive and the price is reflecting this very well.

It seems that this trend will continue in the future so my guess is that it's still a very good time to buy!

You are the one who can answer this but I might give you one of the helpful hint.

You know why the price pumps today? It's because of massive pump (buy) by the bulls. It means at this rate many stil buying coins that's why we are here now at this rate. But at the same some are dumping that's why as of I posting this only playing @ less range. I will assume 50/50 from bears and bulls. Now if you are really aren't sure you can set your own target based on some speculations with fine basis.

Also if you buy today current then suddenly price down. No worries. Just hold and hold. Im pretty sure we will back here many times if the price will fall.

The price might not come down any further than what its at now.  Or maybe it will drop in an hour.  

Well you have to look at it this way.... how much cheaper will you get in? if you pause to wait for cheaper you could end up seeing a $600 price pretty soon. Its hard to miss out on bottom but we've all been there.

You say invest. As with any investing, you need weigh up the risk/benefit potential and determine that compared to your own personal risk tolerance. Bitcoin price is volitile.

If on the otherhand you believe in bitcoin (the protocol) more than just a get rich quick scheme - then any time is a good time to buy. 1BTC will always equal 1BTC.

If you believe in the long term value of Bitcoin, then you can buy right now without problems. If you are just interested in making a quick buck within a very short time, then I wouldn't buy right now. Most people will advice you to buy and hold for the long term as they believe in Bitcoin, but no one can see what exactly will happen in the short time.

Bitcoin is an investment and like gold and property prices rise and fall, the bitcoin prices also fluctuate and when people are OK to take a risk, I don't find it wrong to advise a person to invest in bitcoins. The price of BTC was $1300 and now it's $420-$430 which is still low and hence it is the right time to buy coins and save it.

Prices will rise within the few weeks, better to buy before you lose out.

Noone knows if this is right time to buy or not. Price can go up from 400$ now to 800$ tommorow or opposite to 200$.
I would recommend long term investment. Even if it will go down tommorow after couple years you will be rich.

I would agree with you and as you said Investing in a bitcoin will not waste at current situation and ever. From few weeks onwards Price is moving high day by day consistently. So No need to worry in investing fiat into BTC. I am sure he can invest in bitcoin

Yes, it is not too late to buy bitcoins. Because you may miss the current prices of $410 levels when bitcoin testing the $500 levels by end of this month. Like many people here I too believe bitcoin will hit $1200 levels. So, buying now must be a wise idea.

It's never "a bad time" to buy if you believe in bitcoin. We're currently in a bullish phase, which means that we'll be only going up. People had the chance to accumulate for more than 2 years. Now, depending on how much patience you have, if you bought now, you'd get back x3 in about a year from now.

Buying bitcoin would be always a great thing, and never let you to face loses if you will be ready to wait for some time.

If you want to buy for speculation, then yes it's quite risky. If you buy bitcoins so spend it, it is never a bad time to buy.

I think it depends on the time grame you are looking at. Long term investment, these small price corrections would be of less importance

i was saying that when btc will reach a very high price, the chance to go even higher will be very slim...

it's not clear that bitcoin prices to go more up or to go down but in a long term invstment i would say buy now!!

I do believe that the prices will increase from here but it needs time and patience. I've seen people complaining a lot as they invest in bitcoins and say I lost my fiat cash by investing and hence if they cannot take risks, bitcoin isn't a currency for them.

Just buy in a few clips over the next few weeks.  Average into your entry so you dont have to worry the current price right now.

I think it depends on how long you're going to use bitcoin for. If you're looking for a long term investment and to make some profits, it would be okay to buy right now.
That's if you think that bitcoin will be at $1000 again someday, you'd be able to make profits of off that.

We could see new ATH in my opinion next year so it is still good time to buy. Even if not, Bitcoin is great long term investment, but most of us here believe in tech so not many will tell you not to buy. Make your homework and decide by your self.

I highly believe that we will see the new ATH during the next year and this will be reached easily in my opinion! The end of this 2015 just confirms my theory!

I think any time where the price is below $500 is a good time to invest into bitcoin. It also depends if you're going to invest for a long term or not. If not then I would say don't invest but if you're going for the long term, go for it. I believe going for the long term will get you more profits.

If the price rises long term, then it is good to buy at any time. If you want to trade, then it is difficult to decide. If you bought two years ago, you are still making a loss.

Honestly I think this is the best plan of attack compared to any other plan posed by this thread. Maybe you can derive your own plan based on the majority of responses here and set buy limits for yourself. I think the major consensus of all this is to not buy all 5K worth at once because you would be making a major gamble. Having back up funds when spending that much is necessary when speculating on such a volatile price in Bitcoin.

it is on you that which type of buy you are going to do, short term or long term, in both the case i will also suggest to invest 20% of you investing option, if it goes low you can go for another 20% like this you can average your buying price, if it goes high and you are in short term plan then you can book profit, or else dont watch the price just check that when ever their is a correction you can go for buying , this is what i can suggest.

Some very good points made about how you shouldn't wait for price to get cheaper to get in. Price may get a little cheaper here in the near future, but with all the hype to climb up towards 1k, now is definitely a time to buy.

It depends if you want to invest into bitcoin on a long term or short term. For short term I wouldn't recommend it since it will take awhile before you start making profits but for the long term, I suggest you go for it. I wouldn't wait too long either to buy in if I was you.

It is very difficult to predict whether or not the price will retrace back to around 300 ever again.. If you think bitcoin will continue to grow in the future, does it than really matter if you buy in now or next week, even if it is 50 usd cheaper then?

Beste advise is probaly to spread your buy in time. You risk buying in higher if it continues to rise, but you also have a chance to pick up more cheap coins.

if you can afford to lose the 5k, buy now.

Buying bitcoins is not considered as bad whatever the time is, this is for long term, but for short term i can say that it it not good but not bad time to buy now.

Yeah, if you have any sort of stomach problems, it's best not to pile all your money into bitcoin and if you decide to buy it through Coinbase, it's probably best if you transfer it right out of there and into a safe wallet.  Someone here mentioned buying $2500 worth, but I'd probably buy $1000 at most.  But it also depends on what your time frame is and also what your outlook on bitcoin is.  Good luck.

I will say in simple words that Bitcoin is still under valued if you have eyes on long term investment.After halving of blocks the mining cost will increase and to make it profitable it is essential to be the price higher and then 400 $ should be bottom in my opinion.Keep this in mind and decide by yourself if it is good time or not .

I will say it is best time always to buy.Price is to go high and you should take advantage of these days and hold it to make your life more good.

If you know abit about technical analysis, price spikes usually followed by some sort of price retracement. Wait for it

I would say it would be a good time to buy but the better time to have bought was when the value was even lower at around $200 - $300

Investing half of your money to buy will be better step. If price rises you will almost double your money or not hold those pre bought coin and buy more cheaper coins with remaining fund.

Don't know about Coinbase specifically, but in general leaving your money with some small company in a jurisdiction you may or may  not share is not a very safe idea. In fact, I'm pretty sure trusting third parties with their funds accounts for the majority of BTC lost by Bitcoin users.

Not at all... We thought that it was a bad time to buy a few weeks ago when they were around $350 apiece.

There is this thing called cost averaging. Simply put, you should buy a specific amount in regular intervals. We can say 500$ every week.  So even if the price goes up or down, your average cost is still cheaper than the current price. Then all you have to do is wait till the price hike and all is gain.

And I also support that you should transfer your coins into a safer wallet.

Depending on how it goes,  now might be the only time to buy for some people.

i have the feeling this thread will get funnier and funnier all the way to new ATH.  ;)

Exactly this. If you can afford to spend 5000 on bitcoin you should go for it, don't wait too long.
You never know what will happen with the price.

Honestly it seems that now is really a time to buy. Every morning I wake up we are gone higher and higher.

Something is definitely going on and the positive pressure is not ceasing. This is just a new Bitcoin outlook in my opinion. After a 2 year of down period we are now in the green for a time to come. Whoever wants in better get in fast!

I'm new to Bitcoin -- what's the alternative to Coinbase? I've read you can store your wallet on your computer, but I would be afraid to do that because then I'd lose everything if my computer crashed or was stolen, right?

The closer we are heading towards the block halving, the more we are distancing ourself from the $300 level. We keep saying 'if you want to hold for the long term, then it's the right time to buy' since the price was around $220-$240. And look now, it pays off to buy.

I agree that it's a great time to buy while we still are fairly far away from the block halving. This whole month and probably January too will be good buying moments. Just don't wait too long with buying. If you have money that you don't need the comming year(s), then definitely invest if you was thinking to do so.

Feel the market. There is no wrong buying at $300-$500 mark because I am 100% sure it will surpass that range, even not for now, but chances are really high that it will happen.

Well if you can't afford yes this is a bad time to buy, but you can just try to buy little amount untill 1 BTC and wait for increase so with that you can make profit.

And besides there are ways to earn bitcoin without involving too much in buying so if one can't afford work for bitcoin.

It's always the time to buy bitcoin a bit at a time. I buy bitcoin every month with spare cash I have. Your savings will grow. You can spend your bitcoin when you need to and buy it back when you have the opportunity. It is a matter of time bitcoin will be worth a lot more than $500.

Since nobody can be certain what will happen to the price in the future (although many people certainly hope that it will continue to go up), this way you spread your risk.

It is probably a good idea to consider the negative scenarios - what will you do, if the price goes down ? Will you hold your position, no matter what, expecting the price to eventually recover, or do you have a pain level, at which you will realise your loss and get out ?

There is a very simple answer to your question.

If you think Bitcoin was a good buy at $15 in Jan 2013, after it had doubled/tripled from it's 2012 year long low but was still half of it's previous ATH, then yes now is a good time to buy.

If you think Bitcoin was not a good buy at $15 in Jan 2013 because it had recently tripled in price, then no now is a bad time to buy.

i think that its still a good time to buy if you consider bitcoin to be a very long time investment the price of bitcoin will be way higher after a few years what means it is profitable to buy bitcoins for a while now lets hope my prediction are right i will definitely buy some bitcoins

That's exactly what I'm doing. I don't really care for what the price is right now up until it goes up to $1000, I would be ready to sell some of my bitcoins.
Get some profit out of that and maybe invest again when the price drops.

If you can afford you could buy now. You would still make profits if the price goes up to $1000. You could sell if the price reaches that high and claim those profits.
After you've made those profits you could buy again when the price dips in. That's what most people are doing. To some it doesn't matter what the price is right now.

There really ain't a good or bad time when it comes to Bitcoins, you can buy it anytime you want regardless of the price it possesses, as one day or another, you will have its price back to where you bought them at, and remember, 1 BTC will always be 1 BTC... ;)

For now I would try to hold off buying. The market sentiment is not clear.

There is no sign or book that can predict where we going. In the current market the price seems a little bit high and a big dump can follow easliy.

I too think the same as it may reach $400 but not go below that most probably. There is panic selling in the market but even I am going to wait till the price again becomes stable and then buying would be preferred. I just hope it doesn't go back to $250 as many users would be losing by buying at the current rate.

This is not good prediction as we are in the new year now and the price is still stuck in the $400 range. The price might rise in next quarter.

Well price at this moment is 437$,  and it is because of pumping,  so you have to wait till price will fall again, then will be good time to buy

people who are always waiting will mostly end up waiting too long and by that time the price has gone up instead of down. just buy now with 50% of your money and keep the other 50% for when the price goes down even more. it's a win win for you. if the price goes up you will benefit as you have bought yourseld some coins, and if the price goes down you will benefit too because you can buy at a lower price level. i always trade like this.

Its not the bad time. Its the best time for a buy, as the halving is approaching you will surely get a profit. So with much confidence you can go for a buy in these days.

Every buy price has risk please keep that in mind. You are using the word "think" so even you are not sure like everyone else.

We can play with the risk but never go in an investment with a mind set that this is not risky.

Did you know that you can make profits while at the same time waiting for your buy target which is $400? Bitcoin price are volatile we all know that.

i agree, if you want a quick profit for your short term investment then this range is a good place to make that profit but it can be risky too because the price can continue to go up and you get left behind while selling at $450

yes but with only buying 1 bitcoin is not enough for good profit in short term. But with the small investment it is quite risky but trying altcoin trading is good option.

1 bitcoin is really not enough for profit you need to at least but 50-100 coins to make a profit, So for small time traders will have a hard time gain profit from this value.

Lol not everybody has that amount of money. If you can't buy 50, buy what you can.
But ontopic, right now is a risky period to buy. Sure the chinese people can boost the price, but there is no guarantee that will happen.

Its is a good time to buy and not a good time to sell. The value is not high enough to sell it and that is the problem.

mainly because we are not yet reached the mass adoption stage which is going to increase the price at leas 10 times what it is right now but will take a long time.

Well first of all 5000$ is a lot, so you have to be very carefull

And second, even if we had a price rise days ago,it's still awesome moment to buy, later price probably will never go to 400$ again so if you'll buy them now,  and if price will rise later, you will be happy
