There's a few transactions with 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 1.0 BTC for fees in the block. People wanted to be part of the glory I guess.

Everyone was trying to get their transaction in. People paid A LOT. I only paid 0.005BTC fee for mine, and it didn't get included.

Possibly the reason for so high tx fees: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/13xd05/idea_for_the_210000th_block_lets_all_make/

Btw it's nice that that the block has been found by the pool who splits fees among miners ;-).

Noob question: why does the block reward appear to be 38,xxx coins? I mean I get the 25btc reward, but arent the btc to pay the transction fees supposed to come from the users?

38,xxx coins i guess your looking at the amount of coins transferred in that block.
transaction fees are paid by the sender.
The Miner reward for finding a new block is now 25BTC + TX Fees

Go look at your database transaction logs to see who incremented their counter at the right time?

You guys are assuming that the pool pays attention to TX fees and optimizes the block makeup.

I'm not so sure it does looking at the number of .0005 fee transactions in there. But there don't appear to be any "leftovers" in 210001, so maybe it was just coin age.

Can anyone confirm if Slush's Pool optimizes for TX fee or if this was just FIFO?

If it was mined on p2pool, then the miners would have received the transaction fees. Instead, on slush pool, the pool fee for that block was 13.5BTC. Pretty high in my opinion  :-\

I'm using standard algorithm included in 0.7.0, so transactions are ordered by the fees.

posted this in the newby section earlier, reposting here now that I have been given access.

I am very new to mining, and have been at it less than a week.  This was the first block I have ever found.  I decided to become involved in Bitcoins, because I feel that it could be the answer to all the evils of government controlled currency.  This isn't a "get rich quick scheme" for me. I believe that what we are doing can change the world.  I am incredibly honored to be a part of Crypto-Currency history.

Thanks to Slush's pool for letting me join, if any new miners are out there looking for a great pool  https://mining.bitcoin.cz/

How the fuck did you people screw up his name from LaughingBear to LuckyShare.

I have played a great part of this. Multiple people screwed up, though:

  • slush told me "luckybear" at first
  • I wrote "luckyshare" instead of "luckybear" (my mistake)
  • On reddit, I wrote "luckystrike" (my mistake again)
  • Someone else seems to have rescrambled that to "luckyshare"

It's pretty funny when you think of it: "so what happened on your great bitcoin halving day", "well, we had big discussion about the name of the guy who found block 210,000". haha.

what I like about the fact that fees were so enourmous: That's exactly how satoshi planned it: tx fees will take over as mining incentive while block reward is decreased.

Of course until such fees are the norm, we'll have to wait a little bit longer.

Strength in numbers; fewer transaction fees are needed now to equal the block reward.

It's not like there is such a thing as a "lucky streak" ;).

It's more like he "used his good luck" on finding block 210,000. Which is pretty altruistic because there's no great monetary reward to this (except the bonus slush gave him and maybe some donation).

So thanks for not using your 1 in 100,000 chance on some lottery ticket, laughingbear, but on some Bitcoin fame. It's way cooler, too.

EDIT: and congratulations on your new forum title. It's pretty cool. Envy!

Can someone explain why revenue is not dropping per block for me on deepbit? Is it because hashing power was halved? How come nobody stopped hashing on deepbit (still at 3500GH)... just coincidence? I'm confused!

The reward halving came a bit more quickly than it should have if a bunch of hashing power hadn't shown up out of nowhere. Where did it come from?

@laughingbear: what did you mine it with? GPU or FPGA?

I am using 1 measly Ati radeon hd 5800 at 370 Mhash/s

Congratulations LaughingBear!

Did anyone check if someone managed to get some kind of text message into the legendary block? It is possible to include some messages in transactions, right? If people paid such transactions just to be included, I would assume they would like some vanity messages in there as well :P

Wow.  That may be the "luckiest" event in your life.

A shout out to the entire development team for this historic moment.
The code worked as written.  Well done.

For your approval, the Story of Laughing Bear and the Half-Sized Reward, a children's tale.

There once was a person called Satoshi Nakamoto who invented a new kind of money called BitCoin.
BitCoin was new and small, but Satoshi knew that it could grow into something big and useful.
Satoshi invited all his friends to help him with this money as part of a big game.
Everyone who plays this game has a chance of winning BitCoins every time they play, and they could use computers to play lots and lots.
Satoshi's friends told their friends, and they told their friends, until there were tons of people with BitCoins.
And all these people playing the game made it harder and harder for others to cheat.

One of these friends was Laughing Bear, who started playing the BitCoin game with only a small computer.
One day while his computer was playing the game, it was playing and playing, and it WON!
LaughingBear was very excited because he had never won the game before.
When he looked at the block he found to win the game, Satoshi appeared in a poof of smoke.

"I have an important job for you Laughing Bear," said Satoshi, "I want you to help me with BitCoin."

Laughing Bear asked how he could help, since he liked the BitCoin game.

"Some money is worth less and less if you just keep it. Like ice slowly melting away," replied Satoshi.
I don't like that at all. I want money that grows, like a big tree.
The tree must stop growing new branches or one day risk falling over in a wind."

Laughing Bear thought about a tree going up and up and up into the sky, and then getting blown over by a little puff of wind.

"The same is true of BitCoins, if we have too many, they too will start melting away.
But we can move them around between people forever, without needing to create new coins, or ever melting away.
With no new coins, each coin will be able to buy more and more."

This made Laughing Bear ask, "I can see why the coins would be worth more and more. But if there are no more prizes, why would anyone play the BitCoin game?"

Satoshi then explained about how lots of people liked BitCoin so much, that they would pay for the prize when they used BitCoins.
"So everyone will pay a small fee that will be used for the prize," and showed Laughing Bear how he had received some new BitCoins in his prize, and some from other friends.
He also explained how every 4 years the prize is smaller, but will include some new coins for a long time.

"I understand," said Laughing Bear, "we need to keep making coins, but not too many coins. Over time I should get more from friends than new ones."

"Exactly," said Satoshi, "and there are 2 ways you can help.
First, make sure to keep playing the game to keep cheaters out.
The more the game is played, the less someone can cheat.
Second, use BitCoins to buy and sell things. The more that we use BitCoins, the more they are worth.
In much less than 4 years they will be worth twice as much, and then more and more."

With that Satoshi disappeared, leaving Laughing Bear with a half-sized reward, an extra-large fee, and a chuckle that would not stop.
Laughing Bear laughed all day, and all night, and it didn't stop until the next day, when he arrived at the Bank.

The End

Congrats to laughingbear, I have a few miner threads working over at slush's, I would have killed to be the one that hit 210,000.

I have posted a story over at Slashdot and it is in the submission queue ( http://slashdot.org/recent ) but you never know if your story will get included, some people down-vote just because they don't like bitcoin.

I am on my own personal crusade to get bitcoin recognized by the general public  ;D .

no man, you're not. Been working at it since 2011 and not letting off.

Bitcoin will free the people of the world and help us exit from the crazyness of the continual growth paradigm and debt slavery and be a tool to return back to a more balanced way of life in harmony with mother nature, its creatures and ourselves.

@scrybe: cool story, bro!

Glad I could live up to my nickname.

Did not mean to imply that I am the only one, just that I have made it my own personal mission.

Since it is your mission too, you might want to go over to Slashdot and see if you can get a new submission through.  Mine has fallen off (down voted in the submit queue, apparently this is not big news to some :p )

neither, I simply stated that you are not the only one on this crusade.

I never submitted anything to slashdot. My current target is the gold/silver crowd. It's been very hard with these people, but finally things are moving quite a bit and some key players are coming around. I think they'll flood in en masse sooner or later, it's a perfect fit for their thinking (they're not stupid, just very careful what/who they trust, which is good). All they need to understand is how Bitcoins scarcity works and why it can be trusted and why Bitcoin can be called "tangible".

Please let me/us know in case something pops on slashdot. I frequently post there in bitcoin threads and in one of the latest ones I even managed to score a +5 interesting (http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3272951&cid=42091817).

Will do, the "geek" crowd at Slashdot is more of my target audience (being a geek myself).  I still intend go get something in about the halving, I just have to think of a better angle.

Just so you know I was the one that submitted the story you got a +5 on, I remember your post I would have modded you up personally but they don't allow people to do modding in their own posts.
