Title: TOR: Exit node raided in austria: donate to possibly set legal precedent
Post by: molecular on December 01, 2012, 11:16:34 AM
Let me quote slush from torservers thread.

One guy from Austria has been raided for running Tor exit node.

Also see tor-talk mailing list archive for more details.

Appeal to people with few spare coins: Please show your generosity and send at least small donation to this guy, he needs some money for legal help in Austria.

His donation address (mentioned in article above): 1CPKAMtD4bcLrh8SRHfSxBBMmQQ5cqahPZ (http://blockchain.info/address/1CPKAMtD4bcLrh8SRHfSxBBMmQQ5cqahPZ)

I think this is immensely important for freedom of speech. So if you care about the tor network, please consider donating to help the guy defend himself and possibly the whole network and our freedom by setting a legal precedent.

He already received around BTC 200, but he thinks he'll need 5k to 10k EUR for a good lawyer.

This thread is also for general discussion about tor and its implications for societey if people would like to discuss this.

I've heard of this kind of thing happening before. It seems the police had a warrant.

Protecting TOR is more than a worthy cause; good to see BTC200 having already been raised. We should all chip in a little bit.

yeah, they had a warrant to confiscate everything related to computers and data storage. They took 20 computers and 100 TB worth of storage devices.

What strikes me is that they just ripped out the power cords. What kind of data securing is that? What if the drives are encrypted, you then just passed your chance to read the data at that point.

The officers in that case don't know anything about that stuff. Think of them as a "postman" delivering a package ....
They act out of the "fear" that when you shut them down you delete all the evidence :/

If he had encrypted the drives probably (which everyone should do - by true crypt or some thing else) they will not be able to get any data of the drives :)  They can try but will most definitely fail...

By shutting them down that way they might even destroyed data, if not the hard drives :D

Christ...just one small step and a long plunge away from a global police state. I'll try and scrounge up a few BTC and send it his way.
