Monetary freedom is an apolitical issue. It is like a basic human right, to be able to conduct your financial interactions as you choose, as much as freedom of movement, to seek happiness, etc. It should have been enshrined in founding laws as such, so that the bastards in the banks and political power structures would have been criminally liable when they took it away while noone was watching. GNU actually had most of the operating system ready, and it was just Satoshi that came along and added the final piece they needed for digital currency in the GNU operating system. We could give him 'censorship resistant money' though.
