Title: Need some help/advice with purchasing a laptop
Post by: bigasic on December 08, 2012, 11:20:34 PM
Okay, Im a mac guy.. Im not that familiar with macs, but i seem to navigate just fine.. Here is what I want to do..(get a laptop pc)

1. Be able to do a full disk encryption on my new computer.. So, EVERYTHING is encrypted.
2. Be able to run ubuntu if I want..

I just purchased a HP laptop  quad core AMD processor 6 gigs of ram with windows 8.. I downloaded truecrypt but it wont let me do a full disk encryption, I dont think that truecrypt is totally compatible with windows 8..

Advice? SHould I get  a laptop with windows 7? Will that solve my issues?

Thanks in advance for your help...

I've read that BitLocker is available for Windows but never tried it. Ubuntu 12.04+ let you encrypt whole drive during installation.

If Windows is already present, simply insert Ubuntu installation media before booting the computer. Then follow instruction to setup encrypted LVM alongside Windows. It will automatically install Grub loader so you can choose which OS to boot from. I'm not sure if Windows partition will get encrypted but Ubuntu one will be.
