Title: I need advice on best Bitcoin wallet to replace Coinbase
Post by: Alex Adams on December 21, 2015, 10:15:59 PM
Greetings!

I work at a small nonprofit in Berkeley, CA. We have happily used Coinbase to collect donations for a couple of years now. Suddenly, Coinbase closed our account, seemingly because we are a business and not an individual. I'm not 100% clear on why, but it seems to do with new legal regulations. Anyway, the point is that we need to choose a new Bitcoin wallet, and I need advice on which one to go with.

What I liked about Coinbase: 1) Their system let me easily generate a button so that I could add a Bitcoin payments button to our donations page, 2) Coinbase would convert anything in our account into dollars and do an automatic bank transfer at midnight every day, 3) there were handy reports so that I could keep track of transactions.

Our needs are simple, as you can see. If anybody has tips about a Bitcoin wallet that works like Coinbase, or is better buts still pretty easy to use, I would love to hear from you. The most important features are the ones I posted above.

Thanks!!!!!

You are describing a Bitcoin transaction processor, not a wallet.
The most popular one is BitPay.com. You might want to give them a try.

Bitty is probably your best solution... It does exactly the same thing as what you wanted above.

You'd probably be better off adopting Bitpay or Electrum (there's a way to integrate it on a website)

I advise not to replace coinbase with a single similar system. Get your own wallet with bitcoin core, publish the address on your website, and then use an exchange (possibly coinbase again), manually, to convert the BTC you'll get in fiat when you'll want it. I believe it will be the cheaper option.

You should have a personal wallet that you keep all your donations or funds in that are linked to your website. Preferably, you will receive all your funds in this wallet correlated to a specific address. Instead, you would have full possession and control over your bitcoins. Then you should convert your bitcoins into fiat using an exchange like Coinbase or Gemini as previously stated. I'm sure there is definitely an area where Coinbase would preferably rather deal with single individuals than businesses that are incorporated like yourself just to keep things simpler from a legal and financial aspect. This is probably why they closed your account.

I would go with Armory. It's the most secure on the market. Take a look!

The only benefit with Coinbase is that there is no fee for (almost) all transaction. However, they hold the private keys (for you) so that's the disadvantage and they can shut your account down anytime based on their "reasons".

Blockchain.info

I use Coinbase to buy but immediately transfer it over to Blockchain due to the flexibility they have.

Coinbase is strict when it comes to their t.o.s.  i.e. no gambling and such

Bitpay, Coinify, Bitpos and Coinbox were found during a quick Google search of "Accept bitcoin payments".

You should really have googled it up before asking a question here.

Bitpay I think is the leading company in this field you're talking about(Converting BTC into fiat instantly). So why not try them out.

You are in an organization I believe you're not just the only who want to have access to these funds so BITPAY can be your best option so that those trusted members of the organization can access anywhere so long as they have the application installed. BITPAY is legit and has been used by businesses online.

True, I think your account with CoinBase was closed because you didn't apply probably as an organization. You can probably open a new CoinBase account provided that you address the details appropriately (as an organization) or go for more liberal alternatives mentioned above. Personally, I'd go for a BlockChain wallet.

If you want to automate it, you can easily utilize their API.
Like coinbase, there's an easy way to make a new address.
Maybe not as eye-catching, but the site has more info on hand, like charts and a block explorer.

Coinbase is much better than blockchain.info. But seeing your situation, I think your best option is Blockchain.info. I don't know why Coinbase would close your account like that. Anyone have an idea why?

If you are looking to online wallet then check Xapo. I would see better to have client installed and use your wallet then. You can find number of options.

Seeing as to what you want/need and what you are used to at Coinbase, I would suggest Blockchain.info. Their system is eassy to use as well and you can generate new wallets easily.
With Blockchain you are able to get your private keys from them, unlike Coinbase.

OP said that because of Coinbase's rules or regulations, they are using the wallets as a company and not as an individual. Which seems strange to me, I wonder why they have these rules against companies.

In your situation I would go with blockchain as well, like some of the people here said. Blockchain is very easy to use and you can get your way around on the site pretty fast and easy. You can generate a wallet with just a click of a button on there as well.

frankly I was shocked and could not understand why coinbase close your account, but I believe they have considered very wise about this, maybe you can try beberpa wallet which I think is pretty good, and safe, for example Bitgo or Airbitz.

I would recommend them too.
They have a good API, but above all a good security, 2FA, wallet backup (even automatically to dropbox).

+ they are the no.1 online wallet site, I don't see them running with our funds.

Yeah is better, but the problem is you need to secure it very well that people can't just hack it. What you can better do is have more than 2 wallets to be save so if something happens you the other bitcoins. That is why a lot of people are afraid to use bitcoin.

to sync it and all that garbage and there is secondary security.

But thats for online wallet. If you have alot of coins you should have

I prefer to use Electrum! Excellent simple design, safe and you've got access to your private keys. That's the most important!

i don't think there is any need to change of coinbase  .
according to me there are only two best bit coin wallet
1) blockchain.info
2) coinbase
both of them are useful and security enable wallet.
block chain.onfo wallet use the ip restriction if someone hack your password of wallet .
also the same like fiction of coinbase .
so if you want replace your coin base then you should use
blockchain.info
i found that blockchain.info is the most best wallet then the other wallet of internet of forex currency .
so you should try blochain wallet.

My suggestion is use xapo, and Okpay also accept payment in bitcoin.
I am using these two payment wallets for accepting bitcoin, especially xapo.
If you want to use Okpay, then fpr your info; It is effecient , to accept payment at there go to deposit funds at there and select bitcoin method as deposit, they will generate a bitcoin address for you so use that address for accepting payment, the only problem is that its exchange to USD rate are low than normal. But I trust it more than Xapo.

Thanks!!!!!
i dont really understand why coinbase close your account, have you ask to them why your account closed?
i suggest you to use multibit, its seem like coinbase i think.

you can use Blockchain.info is probably the best and show your wallet balance in USD.
Wrong. No online wallet is the best.Infact blockchain.info is the worst of all online wallet as it has been down almost everytime they faced a ddos attacks. The attacks are so frequent ,that the site members have to put the website down for maintenance every month.I don't think showing wallet balance in USD is a big deal as you can always convert it online.Xapo is somewhat better but not quite as good as Electrum or Core.

Yeah online wallets are here... Well just as your wallet.
You don't put 500$ in your wallet no? It can be lost, stolen, damaged...

Online wallet is the same! Just the same!
You can put those 0.1btc you know you'll need quickly, but not those 2 btc you bought last month ;)

Blockchain is the best option but for me electrum is one of the good wallet online you can download portable version to easy access your wallet.
And its easy to use and you have already receiving address... But the problem of blockchain and electrum has a fee for every transaction than the other online wallet like coinbase or xapo... But blockchain and electrum it the best and secured.

if you want an online wallet you should use blockchain.info because different from coinbase you have control over your bitcoin address by having the private key and they can never block/close your account for no reason.

but also you might want to look into some of other (desktop) wallets. if you don't want to run a full node (core or armory) use an SPV wallet like Electrum or multibit.

I'm very happy with Mycellium, been using it for a few months now. For vault purposes I use a ledger wallet bought last year, it's very practical and secure.

I would recommend to be very careful with Multibit, been hearing a lot of bad stuff about it lately.

i use coinbase myself but if i would change it to something else it would be bitpay!
My suggestion to you is that; You remain on coinbase as in my case it is running much better , a large number of people are using it without any problem, only a few people are claiming for its problems to them.

Well you don't get a problem, fine.

But it's always when you don't get a problem that trust is built and can crash down you know :/

And I don't think enough time have passed to trust them, at least not with great amounts!

1) use android bitcoin wallet.
2) generate new adress every week
3) generate QR-Code : http://www.qr-code-generator.com/

simple.

no neek 3rd party.

no need virtual wallet or enterprise.

it's Bitcoin ! -snip-

I think that the best to do indeed.
Its the securest way that is possible for it.
Yeah, it is a better way for storing bitcins in that way,
I am also planning to shift to android bitcoin wallet, there are a number of benefits of that, but currently I am on xapo and it is also much better.

Coinbase must have changed their terms and hence his account was closed. If he opens another account, it would get closed again. Blockchain or blocktrail would be safer to use for accepting donations IMO.

I would prefer using Xapo as an online wallet than any other. Currently, I use both Coinbase and Xapo because they don't charge withdrawals and I can exchange to fiat easily. Both also indicates the value in Bitcoin and US dollars.
