Title: EU = stupid
Post by: RawDog on December 22, 2015, 04:52:55 PM
So, this is how it goes in the EU...

"Gee this Bitcoin stuff is complex and hard to understand... let's make it illegal"
https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/3-members-euro-parliament-call-stricter-bitcoin-controls-prohibit-virtual-currency-exchange-transactions/ (https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/3-members-euro-parliament-call-stricter-bitcoin-controls-prohibit-virtual-currency-exchange-transactions/)

What are they thinking?  For what purpose would a politician think making illegal a remarkable new technology, for which most applications are completely unknown?

The very good news is no matter how hard the church or state has tried in the past to suppress science - they've always failed.  I don't even think these laws even slow things down.  Thank god our politicians are so powerless.

oh they are from france, not surprise there, they probably relate it to terrorism, when euro is likely more used, their argument against are without doubt invalid

i hope their motion will never see the light

That motion isn't going far, they didn't even took the time to make their case compelling.

I do not think that law will reach light. Europe has been a good place for Bitcoin lately, and have some hope in politicians getting informed first and then doing things.

Since this comes from three France-based members of the European Parliament this attitude is not surprising to me at all.The reason for this is the story that the terrorists who carried out attacks in Paris used Bitcoin.

Everyone is losing their minds over the fact the France is rising voices against the moment. The fact is France just suffered a massive terror attack and they're still deemed by the killings and terrorism. They might just get too carried away by the fact the terrorists use bitcoin and that's why they hate it. They don't really have anything against bitcoin it's just they're insecure if the attacks. Let the time pass by, they will join the moment.

You can't generalize here and call all politicians in EU, (or EU as institution), stupid because of statements from a few politicians.
People are not the same and have different characters, opinions, ideas about anything in the world so before you make such judgment listen others and wait for some official decision about this matter.
Or, even better, send to this politicians detailed info about bitcoin and help them to understand this matter better.

You know what they say. RawDogs will be RawDogs.

Bitcoin has been going through hard times inside the EU, since the attacks in Paris. I hope it doesn't affect it in the long run. That said it probably won't, since until now, no real decision has been made to really hurt bitcoin inside the EU. This is probably destined to be overlooked, too, and bitcoin will go on.

I don't think any politician is going to willingly listen or read up on detailed information about bitcoin or any other cryptocurrencies as of right now.  There is just no need for it yet.  A good majority of politicians are backed or corrupted by the Central Banks in every nation in some form or fashion.  I mean hell, the Central banks just dropped the gold standard completely about 50 or so years ago (not quite sure of the exact date)... so this all is still kind of relatively new territory in an economic sense.

If/when there ever comes a time where the inflation the Central Banks create skyrockets, then there is no other choice than for the politicians to do something about it.  So it makes sense that politicians are trying to ban it, especially politicians from France because they have to seem like they are trying to protect their citizens from the nasty terrorist organizations that "use it" to fund their operations...

TL;DR: There needs to be a need for Bitcoin before politicians want to accept it.

Because ,most politicians are in the pockets of those with  the biggest bank accounts, which lets face it is the Banks themselves who are threatened by bitcoin.
So, this is how it goes in the EU...

Whatever rules and regulation they put into bitcoin will never die but it may affect its price. I think these polticians are only talking on behalf of some large european banks.

These are 3 members of the french FN saying this if I'm not wrong.
That's far from the EU being stupid.
Although the EU is really being stupid in many reasons, in that case it's just one national party.
I wouldn't worry too much. Not that long ago European Court announced the decision of Bitcoin being vat tax-free within the EU.
Not that I would say. ;)

The governments and powers that be in general are going to keep pushing an agenda to ban anything that may be a challenge against the status quo, and in the long term they know the potential of Bitcoin to disrupt this hegemony, so I think it will only get worse.

The European Government is heavily manipulated by banks and other groups. It's similar here in the US.

That's true. Governments are no longer independent, they depend on banks and banks control them.

Even if this goes through it would probably takes years for a half baked solution.. The EU is so big and the regulations between the countries are so different, that any major things takes years to go through..

Even mobile roaming took like 5-10 years to get it fully kicked out..

The terrorist attacks in Paris have made a lot of people start looking into digital currency as the perfect tool for financing terrorism. Unfortunately, these guys don't even bother a new technology that can bring us all a lot of benefits. Instead, they raise the pointing finger...

Hey, come on, it's only 3 guys in a Parliament which has more than 500 members!
This isn't a new law. And European system is very, very slow to turn a proposal into a law. It would also require a majority to support this proposal, so nobody should be afraid of that stupid idea.

If its only 3 persons isn't a problem, the eu parliament has a lot of people, they can't do nothing with only three persons. Eu parliament is very slow on proposal laws, they can be speaking about it some years, and finish with nothing.

I don't think they are stupid, they are trying to protect their insolvent banks. They've just passed a law allowing banks to transfer people's savings to the capital assets of the banks. Merkel has just ripped off Greece to try to save the dying German Douchebank, who has the largest exposure to junk derivatives of any bank. Of course they want to stop people using Bitcoin as a store for their savings.

They are stupid, because you can't stop people from using anything, it's their right, their freedom, their independence to do whatever they wish to...
They are paying taxes to live there, paying bills and everything to the government, so you can't say government isn't getting anything from them...
Bitcoins aren't anything that's related to some terrorism or some bad things due to which they are stopping everyone using it...

OK, they can do whatever they want and we can use bitcoin as we want.
Bitcoin is already illegal in some countries. And people from these countries did not stop using it

Its impossible to unite countries that are so diverse with one currency.
Maybe it's the same story with Bitcoin.

Illegal in the sense that banks are not allowed to co-operate with the Bitcoin-based businesses. The Bitcoin users are still able to trade their coins for fiat or vice-versa. But if the banks refuse to open savings accounts for Bitcoin-based businesses and startups, then it will create a lot of hardship for the owners of these ventures.

In today's world we do not even NEED banks to put our money in. There are plenty of services where you can keep your money safely online.
