Title: Can't seem to get ATI R9 380 to start mining.
Post by: Tmerlo on December 24, 2015, 07:39:17 AM
So.. I just got an ATI R9 380 and I can't seem to get it mining. I tried SGminer and that nicehash miner thing. Nicehash miner doesn't even see my card and SGminer just goes to a black screen and does nothing.

I have all the latest drivers installed and I tried installing the OpenCL SDK (I think it was called APP SDK), one of my many searches on the web came up with this as a possible cause.

If anyone is up to the challenge of helping me out that would be great.

Try to delete these 2 files: in the sgminer folders (nicehash miner)

amd_opencl32.dll
amdocl.dll

it should detect them.

Hey! That worked. I can now see the card on nicehash miner. But now when I try to benchmark I get a BSOD and a frowny face :( (gotta love windows 10). The error says SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (atikmdag.sys).

Go inside the bin folder and start sgminer manually without the nice hash app (runme.bat or something). See if that works

There are 4 sgminer folders. I tried the runme.bat located in the sgminer-5-2-1-general folder and it did the same thing. BSOD atikmdag.sys just after it showed version info.

I don't know if this helps any but I did sgminer.exe -n and got this:

Just choose a folder, doesn't really matter for now. We just want to get your card mining.

I remember me having that same BSOD atimkdag.

But that wasn't while starting up sgminer or so. I got it at random.

I believe i had to remove all the drivers, reinstall them all before installing any remote administrative software. Like Teamviewer or vnc.

Because my issue was i first installed vnc and tv and than i installed the drivers. That constantly gave me issues.

Install Afterburner as well if you haven't already..

Thanks for helping me out with this.

I uninstalled Teamviewer and the amd drivers, rebooted, disabled avast, reinstalled latest amd drivers and installed MSI Afterburner. Then I ran the runme.bat located in the sgminer-5-2-1-general folder and it did the same thing. It shows some info, pauses for a countdown, shows some version info then BSOD.

Sorry this is being so difficult.

Does the "Tonga" have anything to do with it? I see files in the SGminer folder like "darkcoin-modHawaiigw64l4ku0.bin" but none that have Tonga in them. Like darkcoin-modTonagw64l4ku0.bin for example. Just guessing. This is the first AMD card I've ever had.

Edit: I also tried downgrading the driver to version 15.7.1 using the device manager and trying to manually install them but for some reason it says that version 15.200.1062.1004 were installed. I tried it anyway and it still blue screened.

There should be a file called log.txt in the Nicehash Miner folder.. why not you paste it here http://www.twitzer.com/ (http://www.twitzer.com/) and post the link.. there should be useful information in there.

Thanks. (:

Oh yeah i forgot to mention.

Rename the darkcoin-modHawaii to darkcoin-modTonga and it'll work fine :)

I can see in the log that the Nicehash Miner has added your card. I'm not sure why you cant see it.  :-\

We're past that problem. Now we're working on a BSOD: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (atikmdag.sys) whenever I try to mine using nicehash miner, benchmark using nicehash miner or try running runme.bat from the sgminer folder.

I'm just throwing out ideas here. What algo did you try to mine cause for some reason some GPUs don't like certain algo (I personally don't know why). Make sure in the sgminer-fixed.conf file to have only one algo config in and running the batch file again. Just a thought. (:

I give that a try.

In the mean time I tried an old version of sgminer, 4.1.0. I think it's called sph-sgminer_x13mod. It didn't blue screen but it also didn't seem to work. so I tried other versions of sgminer using just a command bat file all the way up to version 5.1.2.

The thing is it isn't blue screening with any of them as long as I use a simple, custom bat file. But it also doesn't have any mining display, the CMD window is just black. But westhash shows I am connected but at 0 Mh. And I could swear I saw it actually hashing at one point, just VERY slow at like 5kh.

Edit: So Onward... I figured out the command to log to a file because I can't see what the miner is doing and this is what I get:

It'd rather not do it using a virtual desktop. With it blue screening it would be a pain anyway.

The blue screen definitely has something to do with the auto switching portion and not sgminer itself.  It only blues screens when I run the runme.bat or when I try to benchmark or mine using nicehashminer.exe.

If I run sgminer using my own bat file it doesn't crash but it goes to a black CMD window after showing version info.

The nicehash site shows a miner connected but 0 accepted 0 rejected.

The log file of sgminer show it starting up but not doing anything.

BFGminer does run but I never get any accepted but it does show info and not just a black window after version info.

So I might have 2 problems. 1) Nicehash miner Blue screens. 2) SGminer doesn't display anything after the version info but also doesn't mine.

I have the latest ATI drivers installed but I have tried to install 15.7.1.

I installed the latest APP SDK.

I've tried older versions of SGminer.

I'm not sure what else to try. Maybe if I can get it even working with another miner program so I at least know its working correctly. My problem is I have no idea of what switches to put in the bat files. I know the card works good because I've tried playing ARK Survival and Skyrim.

No problem, just want to help out.

Have you tried mining Ethereum?

Does that work?

You already tried to use the stock sgminer with stock kernel/binaries right?

put your runme.bat and *.conf file @ paste bin or so and show it here.

But your issues are driver issues or something i think.

Try ethereum first. you can find a windows version @  cryptomining-blog.

Let me know how it went.

Greetings

Greetings

Ok, started trying Ethereum. I ran nanopool-ocl.bat and it started getting some sort of DAG? I think it's working. Started getting a wallet set up. Wow, Ethereum really isn't user friendly yet. But It's syncing. I should have more info soon.

Edit: It's happily mining away.

miner  16:17:04|main  Mining on PoWhash #19f23f26ΓǪ : 19141414 H/s = 21495808 hashes / 1.123 s

Edit3: I also tried many different versions of sgminer. old, new and custom. I used the same bat file for all of them.

Code:
setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1

Ok that's good, you're doing 21Mhz, which is good. you'll earn something now :)

Anyhow, that's good, you're able to mine "something" :)

Still have no clue why sgminer is being so stubborn over there.

it would help if i could see what's exactly happening.

could you show me your .bat and .conf file info?

paste it here inside a

It's X11, the stock btc address is still in the .conf file, change that if you don't want to mine for someone else :)

Just tested it over here and works fine. Scan with Virustotal first before you run it. Never trust anyone here :)

Good luck!

3D as in Skyrim? or 3D as in stereoscopic 3D? If you mean games like Skyrim then yes. I've been playing Skyrim and Ark Survival Evolved, both on max settings.

It's X11, the stock btc address is still in the .conf file, change that if you don't want to mine for someone else :)

Just tested it over here and works fine. Scan with Virustotal first before you run it. Never trust anyone here :)

Good luck!

I'll have to work on this one. I'll see if I can set up a test machine or figure out how to install display drivers in a virtualbox environment. Can you PM me the changes that were made?

Ok on a testmachine, but not in a virtual box environment, bad idea.

I just did some cleanup for the batch and the config file.

Just download it, and try it on your machine where you have issues.

And if you don't trust me, run it through virus total first.

I'd love to give it a try but it's being flagged left and right as a virus. Windows 10 won't even let me view the .bat file (I've never even see it do that before). Wouldn't it be easier to just paste the bat and config files in a code box? I have many different versions of sgminer. I'm sure I have the one you were working with.

Also. I let Ethereum miner run all night and it ran fine. 20.5 Mhs average.

What about the power consumption? Is that lower than 280X? What are your settings?

You're right, Chrome flags it. IE doesn't.

The problem was apparently some leftover stuff from previous driver installations. It was suggested to me to use Guru 3D Uninstaller then reinstall the drivers and that got it working. I'm still having minor issues but I should be able to tackle those. Thanks.
