Title: Bitcoin Exchanges
Post by: PartsSlinger on December 28, 2015, 05:34:57 AM
Hello all,

I am new to the world of btc. I have been researching it on and off for the past few years, but in the past few months have made my research a daily event. I have even bought some of the physical coins created by Lealana and Casascius. While I am having fun collecting these coins I really want to get into actually buying bitcoins in it's real form and not just pretty cold storage coins.

Where do you recommend I do exchanges through? I am based in the USA and plan on buying and storing coins. I've heard mixed reviews on coinbase. Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advanced.

Theres alot of exchanges to choose from imo is to stay away from coinbase they are asking your personal infos which is risky..
there are good bitcoin exchanges like kraken bitstamp cryptsy cexio and many more these exchanges could be your best bet imho

Try paxful.com or localbitcoins.com... They're the best. ;)

I would try either kraken or bitstamp. Both have a solid reputation and are serious players in the exchange world.

They both require ID verification for withdrawing larger amounts though, so if you have a problem with that, localbitcoins is probably your only option.

Also paxful.com. It's the alternative to localbitcoins ;)

I don't live in USA but I am a user Coinbase. I use Coinbase as a wallet for all my bitcoins. Normally is good that not all your bitcoins be only in one wallet. But I told you that to make you understand my trust in this business. I am customer there for about three years and had even one time something to complain. To come back to your problem. The service wanted by you (buy/sell bitcoin) is yet not available in my country. So I cannot tell as for personal experience if this service is the best one or not. But reading all the above by me and adding what I have heard and see in the site about your question, must the best place to buy or sell bitcoins. I personally use CEX.io but I am not satisfied from the fees and the prices offered from this site in the bought of bitcoin (I only buy bitcoin). But have nothing to do. It is an obligatory one. Anyway you can try for yourself. Buy little amount in both and make the comparison. Maybe even in other exchanges given by someone else. My conviction is that Coinbase will be the best choice.

As a newbie I try virwox and it's not bad... or even buy on ebay!

I have used virwox initially when I bought bitcoin for the first time. Was the only exchange who accepted paypal and this make me felt sure about tho bought (was no need to give the data of my credit card to the buyers). And were not such opportunities which offered the bought of bitcoin. According to me is a good exchange but have high fees. Don't worth to buy there. For sure Coinbase will be better but maybe even cex.io named by me may be better. Have time that don't buy at virwox and they may have changed the fees but doing two steps to buy for sure will increase the "lost" money during the purchase.

Thanks for the rapid responses and various options. I'm going to look into all the ones mentioned and try some of them out with smaller transactions and see which ones I like the most.

Being that I am new to btc I'm not looking to do any trading. I just want to buy some btc put in it cold storage and forget about it for a few years and see what happens.

Yeah even I am localbitcoins.com Only for exchanging my bitcoins to fiat. In that traders are very convenient to the users. Escrow system is very fine in between the transaction. We can find the traders in any country to sell or buy.

i am using coinbase and the transaction is surprising fast, almost immediate if you transfer your money from bank to coinbase. however the bad thing is that you can change back to $$(maybe there is a way but i cant find it) and the exchange rate is quite bad.

What is their exchange rate from bitcoin back to fiat? I always wondered about it as I imagined it would be quite high. I am not in the states so I could not try and see what it would be.

I have tired to purchase the bitcoin the transaction was cancelled. I didn't receive the bitcoin my money was taken off the card. When I called the card issuer they said it went to a mobile device. The seller hasn't returned my messages. I feel this best Exchange around us.

It's the main thread here with listed the main exchanges.

But like to read the user reviews here. Many new exchanges listed here are just exchanges waiting to run a way with your money.

be careful with alot of those exchanges on that list. Go to the search at the top and search each one
1 by 1 and find posts with peoples comments to find the safest / best one. Dont just deposit to one of
these randoms.

Just you need to find good trader according their trust, feedback of them and Reviews. There is escrow system in localbitcoins. So no need to worry at all. While you releasing bitcoin.

you need to add to that list the fact that coinbase, is  connected to IRS, maybe for someone this a good thing, but not certainly for me, i don't want to be tracked for every movements

also they require id for every sum

If you are from the US, you can use Gemini, it is 12th largest volume exchange now. It is regulated, so your money is safe there.

No serious trader will join Gemini due to their low volumes. Their 30 day volume is a disappointing BTC12,800.

It is the 12th largest volume exchange now. Give it time, it will grow. The cryptsy just closed, it is not regulated.

I just tried Coin Based. Did two exchanges with them and overall liked the process. The only downside is that it took a week for each transaction. Is that a normal time of turn around? Are any of the other exchanges faster than that?
