You can have a different blockchain with a token / any alt. It won't have Bitcoin's awesome hashing power backing it though. Right now the value of Bitcoin helps secure the block chain. It isn't "needed" in a strict sense to function, but to function securely in a distributed environment, the value provides the incentive to do so.
