Title: Dutch Start-up Fest: URBAN MINING with Credits
Post by: deejay on January 08, 2016, 02:59:54 PM
What is this about ?

This project aims to reduce waste and contributes to a more effective economy.

The project is called: Urban mining with Credits - we need your VOTE (only a few minutes time investment).

The idea behind the project is that people in a municipality are rewarded with the use of a credits system (alternatively a cryptographic token, but more research is needed) for bringing used electronics to the waste yard (the electronics are weighed and then credits are awarded according to the weight). In fact they become shareholder.

The used electronics can be mined (urban mining) and this generates revenues as those electronics contain valuable materials, this revenue is put back into the system, this way the credits get value.

If this project is the poll winner on impactcity and gets the most votes it is more likely to succeed, you can contribute to that success by casting your vote and (potentially) help the bitcoin ecosystem forward... now. Or even better... first vote and then share or tweet. We can do this together!

What is the incentive for me to do this, why would i vote for your project?

We promise to investigate the use of cryptographic tokens for the credit system and also investigate how we could leverage factom to store timestamped weightings data in the bitcoin blockchain so that we keep a public record of all the weightings and the data becomes 'immutable'.

You can read more about the project here: http://impactcity.nl/innovator/urban-mining-with-credits/, and there you can also VOTE for us. We probably still need around 500 votes to win....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAKgmNEXnj8

Contribute to an efficient economy and vote for urban mining with credits.

Okay, i am convinced ... Now where can i vote exactly ?

There is a button in the right column of this page, where you can vote:

Not only if you win on poll but i think you should start investing on using cryptocurrency for incentive or to pay to the family who give you guys their waste. In this way people will more be interested in use of cryptocurrency.

@~Bitcoin~

If i understand correctly:

You say this:
or to pay to the family who give you guys their waste

--> that is exactly our concept ! people who bring electronic waste will be payed out in credits, so they will be shareholder in the 'local circular economy'

With other point you are right, we will anyway research this, but if you all vote for us, the chances are higher of success.

I will refine the text a bit.

id look into investigating the whole 'pay per kilo' thing

1. i can get a heavy microwave for $40, where as a phone may have more precious materials and higher priced spare parts (battery, screen) but weigh alot less.
EG it would take 9 phones to equal 1 microwave. but the spare part/scrap value of a phone is not a 9th of a microwave. infact its more like 9 times more..

2. instead of 'pay per kilo' why not pay per gram.. after all crypto currencies are divisible by 8 decimals. so where 1kg=1coin, 1gram can=0.001coin, that way people wont be put off of handing electronics over, as they will get paid per gram, rather than having to have the desire and concentration to hoard all their electronics until they reach the 1kg milestone

3. scrap metal industry. if people can find a way to be paid 'cash in hand' whether its banknotes or cryptocurrencies.. instead of traceable wire transfers.. they would abuse it. eg: in the uk they use to allow cash in hand trades for scrap. and people use to remove copper from church roofs, copper piping from sides of houses. even telephone cabling and other metals they can rip off of buildings they dont own.

...

What kind of valuable materials? I don't think there's a market for used spare parts of old generation electronics and I thought recycling precious metals is only profitable for the really old models of computers/phones (not many of them left).

Anyhow, voted for you.

You'd be surprised with how many people still have many of these old electronics laying around. Maybe the newer stuff is worth less, but it would still contain some valuable materials.

I also voted btw, hope you can succeed with this, seems like a neat idea!

I guess what you want to develop is a token with value that can be given to people who urban mine. Well, IMO that is quite an interesting concept. The best way to develop this should be to build a community and probably to launch a coin to support it or perhaps a token sale... it will all depend on what the business model you are trying to follow!

In terms of precious metals, the newer stuff indeed contain some of them, but, due to miniaturisation etc, the amounts are almost  microscopical. It's simply not worth the time spent on striping the device and separating relevant components as well as other costs (ie chemicals, protective cloths).

In terms of older devices, whatever their number is, those will eventually disappear, so it's impossible to build sustainable business around it.

Ps. Im not giving up my Atari 65xe  :)

The killer app of bitcoin would be an app which takes bitcoin to the masses and has a wide range of uses.
You can't call a specific app (no matter how good it is) the killer app of bitcoin.

If I bring in the electronics waste, how is receiving altcoins or shares better for me than receiving dollars or euros or bitcoins?

@all - thanks a lot for your feedback - i really appreciate it

@odolvlobo - it shouldn't make a difference to the user which coin, except perhaps for practicalities (e.g. with bitcoin you can buy food through thuisbezorgd.nl in the netherlands, with dash i don't think so) - in the end the user gets money - but we have to do research on regulation and whether it will be accepted by municipalities

@aso118 - you are right -to be honest the killer app part was to get your attention :-) but perhaps say killer concept would be more accurate ...

if real economies start using tokens  to improve the environment it seems to me one of the best use-cases i can think of -> killer concept

@pawel777 - i've been told the older stuff contains more gold ... however don't pin me down on it ... i am doing it for this project ... so i am not an expert and yes ... send me your atari :-)

@BTCBinary - thanks for your thoughts - interesting

@eternalgloom - thanks for your vote ! appreciate it!

@franky1 - i share with you the critique about some devices containing more gold, such as cellphones ... i shared this with the domain expert today, he is an expert on waste - also, interesting idea's you have there, with grams

This would reduce the quality of recycling/reuse. It is better to allow small scrap metal processors, and repair services to process unwanted electronics, rather than just running them through a frag machine. Family units are better at dismantling things like microwaves for the copper and other metals. It becomes uneconomic if you have to pay staff for the dismantling.

@Jet Cash

I think it would be too expensive for small metal processors and repair services to process (huge amounts of) waste, i think it should be done on a large scale before money can be made from it.

However i don't see how it would reduce the quality of recycling.

Here is a video that explains the concept in English, i hope it makes it more clear, and as you can see it is already happening, but without the financial incentive:

I voted your project, its good to recycle the lot of waste that can have a second oportunity, repairing them, or recycling its components. And could be good for the crypto economy if you pay them with bitcoins, because new users will join this comunity.

You should post this on r/bitcoin for better exposure + more votes, if you haven't already. You can also try Voat.io (alternative to reddit).

I watched the video, and it seemed to me that the emphasis was on the extraction of precious metals, and other metals were ignored. I noticed that Microwaves appeared to be destined for a frag machine, with no attempt to extract copper transformers or other non-ferrous metals. Cutting the mains cable was referred to as de-polution, but running it through a granulator will yield pure copper granules. Similarly, hard drives can yield a variety of specialist metals such as neodymium magnets. Lumping all of the ferrous metal into one pot means that the main use for the extract is rebars for use in the building industry.  Separating light iron, cylinder cast, shearing, and cast allows for a wider variety of uses for the reclaimed product. This separation is expensive in terms of man power, and traditionally it was done by small scrap yards and scrap c0llectors, recent government regulations have forced many of these out of business, and I belive that this is to the detriment of the economy and the environment.

One other point is that local government refuse collection services are funded in part by the sale of rtecovered metal. Removing this from their collections will lead to an increase in their charges. Not much of value goes to landfill these days.

@All - the contest ends January 17th at 23:59 (GMT+2) - Please keep on voting as competing project is gaining ground

@Jet Cash - it sounds like you are an expert. i will ask our domain expert to answer this question for you - i will forward it to him and once he replies i will post back here. It is also about plastic btw, plastic is refactored into skateboards (longboards) and sold back to the markets.

@Tey - I will send you a private message

@pawel7777 - thanks will do - i also posted it in the Dutch bitcoin group, i have more result there than here i think as the number of post views is much higher

@pinkie31 - thanks alot
