Title: New Year’s Eve photo of drunk people is like a Renaissance painting

On New Year’s Eve, photographer Joel Goodman captured drunk revelers falling over on a Manchester street. Nothing out of the ordinary in England – except that people are comparing the photo to Renaissance art!
The image depicts a drunk man being arrested by the police, another man lying down on the ground with his beer, a woman crossing the street and looking straight at the camera, and a crowd nearby watching it all unfold.

The internet’s saying it adheres to the ‘golden ratio’ due to its perfect composition. Others are citing parallels to classical works like Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam.

In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, Goodman explains that many find the photo appealing because of the subject matter.

‘There are plenty of photographs published that show people having a great time. It’s much safer and easier photographing happy, willing people posing than photographing angry, drunk people candid’, he said. ‘That’s not a criticism of the former, but it’s one reason why the latter might stand out’.

Goodman’s masterpiece reached Twitter fame through BBC producer Roland Hughes’ account, where the photo has already gotten more than 28,700 retweets and 29,700 likes. Don’t be surprised if you find this at a museum any time soon!

Just so Americans and other foreigners who fantasize about Britain know, this is what awaits you in reality, what you see on television represents an absolute tiny minority of how Upper Class Britain lives and even that's largely fanciful, the rest is this lol so don't say I didn't warn you.

I can imagine because the cost of living in Britain is so high. I visited Britain last year, and vowed never to go there again. The costs for even the most basic necessities is so damn high compared to what I pay for stuff here in Canada.

Chaos and order, a typical saturday night in every Town and City in the UK
Slobs

Modest Musorgsky, always the red-nosed drunk. It's Ilya Repin's fault for painting this marvellous portrait of him RIGHT BEFORE HE DIED of alcoholism

It´s just drunk people. No big news. The brilliance is in how he freezes and frames the perfect moment. It´s true art.

I'm glad other people have realised it, here in the UK they're in denial, while food is relatively inexpensive, anything else like car insurance and housing has completely skyrocketed, baby boomers are the only ones who can afford houses which is why people of my generation are all living with their parents or at Universities. Pretty soon it's all going to collapse and hopefully at things will at least be allowed to reset itself once people realise what a clusterfuck both mainstream parties have made of the situation.

However as it stands currently, it is mathematically cheaper for me to learn a new language and go and live in somewhere like Japan than it is to buy a house here despite the fact I was born and raised in this country, since the government has clearly dictated they don't want people living here I'm just going to up and leave the second I get the chance.

Call me a philistine, but I just can't see any value in a photo like that.
I don't think I will ever be able to.

It´s an abstraction. Some interpret it as art and therefore see value. Others don´t. If he frames it and sells it to an art museum I guess most people will interpret this abstraction as art.
