Title: Great Day for Bitcoin. Cryptsy finally admitted theft and Mike Hearn rage quits
Post by: iCEBREAKER on January 15, 2016, 12:49:06 PM
This is a great day for Bitcoin.

Hearn@gnome.zurich.ch has with typical self-aggrandizement surrendered unconditionally to the Knights of Satoshi, leaving the Gavinista insurgency demoralized and rudderless.

A parasitic shitcoin exchange will no longer operate fraudulently on an undisclosed fractional reserve, teaching noobs about the risk of being too greedy and gullible.

Fee markets continue to mature, as Bitcoin's pay-for-priority model ignores the drama and reliably records properly funded transactions.

Planned upgrades to Honey Badger proceed apace, as Core's Wizards develop miracles such as Lightning, SegWit, Sidechains, Confidential Transactions, RBF, CLTV, etc.

The Winklevoss ETF is one day closer to approval, while Bitcoins are shaken free from forlorn faint-hearted Gavinista fail-forkers' feeble fingers.

The Bitcoin Core community continues thriving under the light touch of Thermos's moderation and administration, while the Gavinistas splinter into increasingly esoteric personality-driven cliques.

Paper money continues to burn, as Chinese and other markets are in free-fall despite the best efforts of Hearn's beloved BIS coordinated and funded Plunge Protection Teams.

I'm happy as a daisy!

You've certainly created a nice thread. I'm actually happy to see both go although it is unfortunate for the people that got affected by the Cryptsy scenario. I'm also afraid that this might not be the last time that we've heard from Hearn (he might make more of these bold statements).

" Bitcoin has no future whilst it’s controlled by fewer than 10 people"
Luckily it is not controlled by fewer than 10 people.

millions lost by Cryptsy
Less than $10m.

Google didn't give a shit when Mike left.

Bitcoin also didn't give a shit when he left the building, only sheeps running like headless chickens.

The price dropped with $30 bucks due of Cryptsy hack, i've seen worse than this..np.

Thx for cheaper coins and it's just ''business as usual'', let's move on.

not even 6M actually, they were 13K coins, at 450 you do the math

bitstamp faced the same fate 5M lost but the price recovered after that, dunno why this time will be different

iCEBREAKER you're becoming one of my favourite posters here. I somehow doubt this is the last we hear from Mike Hearn though.

July 2014 bitcoin as around 630 USD and litecoin was around 9 USD, so at that time values it makes this a theft of almost 11 million USD.

Oh man I can not describe my inner feelings in words, so happy I am that weirdo Hearn has finally officially broke with Bitcoin.
That guy, at least imo, had been a trojan horse hired by the incumbents since quite a while.
Regarding Cryptsy it was just a matter of time, we all knew that.
So yes this had been indeed good news. One shady character and one shady exchange less in space.

i thought that too, but why coindesk say only 5M? http://www.coindesk.com/unconfirmed-report-5-million-bitstamp-bitcoin-exchange/

"Bitstamp lost 18,866 BTC from its hot wallet, worth approximately $5,263,614 at a time when the price of bitcoin averaged $279."

I lost some money in Cryptsy, I had some altcoins... I don't really care, it wasn't that much money, it was so little that I was too lazy to open a ticket for my stuck withdrawals. Fuck them, they have been such a pain in the ass for months now, so many people complaining on the chat and getting banned because they wanted their money back.

Edit: Actually they have cancelled my withdrawal, now the BTC is back on my Cryptsy account. Are they planning to give us our money back, or are they going to close the site while we have the money sitting there?

Yeah, why do I even ask right? lol. But seeing the BTC pop up on my wallet instead of being on the limbo of an unfinished withdraw request gave me some hope. I guess it's the final fuck you, like "hey, HERE'S how much money you are going to lose exactly, thought luck!" Then they close the site.
Glad it's not even 50 dollars.. still really annoying.

Well which happened first, the cryptsy hack or the announcement by Mike H.?

Because it is entirely possible no-one cares about Mike and they're just selling because of the exchange hack (that is less of an issue than Mt. Gox) and Mike wants to feel like he did something by seeing the market go down. I completely looks like he wants to feel special, and his opinion has no impact on the Bitcoin economy.

Good, you saved yourself frustration because their support is on par with Comcast. I lost coins in their exchange and they just gave me the old run run around... I had to email them about "investment opportunity" just to get responses to my emails.

Andreas said, "the writing was on the wall for those who were paying attention" after Mt. Gox went down.  It's safe to say that investors and customers of Cryptsy had plenty of warning that it was in dire straits.  For example, Cryptsy was not paying dividends to shareholders on cryptostocks on time, people were losing money because their trades were not being executed on time.

I agree with OP, the free market can be a b*tch as it weeds out weak hands.  Bitcoin and the bitcoin economy are better off in the end.

I think it is less making the miners rich and more making it to they can cover their costs and continue mining.

Typically, even giant industrial mining corporations do not earn enough to make huge ROIs quickly, and is a long and drawn-out investment.

I personally think $200 USD is a bit low, anywhere between $500-$1000 is good for Bitcoin in it's current state.

It's indeed super low.. specially in june when we reach the halving. The natural price should be at around 1500 even, and we should see a pump way higher than this, assuming that more trolls like Mike Hearn don't appear to announce doom and gloom.

Two Florida law firms filed a class action lawsuit against Cryptsy and big vern. I don't think they will give you your money back unless you are part of that class action. If Cryptcy goes bankrupt any money it has will be split between all its creditors who sue it, and nobody else.

I somehow doubt this is the last we hear from Mike Hearn though.

I doubt it too.

IMO Mike Hearn and Gavin have tried to hurt bitcoin more than anyone on the planet.

1) Taking advantage of the blocksize limit problem and eventual solution, they propose Bitcoin XT and then deceive everyone into buying into it because of technical reasons when the truth is their hard-fork is about governance reasons, with Hearn to be the supposed 'benevolent dictator'.  Dictator of what could potentially be the future global reserve currency?!  That would never work!

2) Then they propose 'Bitcoin Classic', 'Bitcoin Unlimited'.  All altcoin hard forks!  I'm personally offended by the names alone.

3) After pumping bitcoin, he has now sold and spent his reputation just to badmouth bitcoin.  His points are all invalid and/or completely addressable.  In his post, he insinuates he uses bitcoin everyday.  How can he call it a failure?

This will all pass.

I have high hopes for the lightning network layer, with blocksize limits increased thereafter only as needed.
It is far from certain what will be needed with this new layer as of yet, perhaps we will 10-fold or even 100-fold capacity with no block limit increase what-so-ever.
Glad to see Mike & Gavin fail in their take-over of the bitcoin protocol.

OP is right. In loosing Mike Hearn and Cryptsy, the bitcoin ecosystem has just shitted out 2 of its biggest liabilities. Just a brief dip in price and onward!

.... and now Core devs have thrown Theymos to the wolves.

I'm happy as a daisy!

https://i.imgur.com/sDHOoZ2.jpg[/img]

Such BS. If Mike was so wrong and a hindrance to the project... the market would have rallied with the news he was quitting Bitcoin for good.

The real reason for the drop is that we very well may be firing Blockstream Core as the development team for Bitcoin this spring. That means uncertainty, lots of it, markets hate uncertainty. Already, half of the hashrate has signed on to the direction of Bitcoin Classic, and it isn't even released yet. Comparing it to XT is a display of ignorance.

The good news, once the fork goes off without a hitch, 1MB4EVA crowd rage dumps, we can rally HARD... and have the extra capacity to do it.  :)

The tide is turning against the Blockstream takeover. Can't say I didn't try to warn you.  :-\

You've been bootlicking the wrong powers. Bitcoin routes around attempts to steer and control it, about time you learned that. The control you believed they possessed is slipping like sand out of a clenched and mailed fist.

I'm salivating about buying up a piece of Mircea's suicide short this spring. If I'm lucky (and he's not a coward), I'll get a piece of iCE's rage dump too.

Let Mr. Hearn leave and play with the banksters, nobody wanted his xt fork for very good reasons. But the panic selling will stop. Why? Bitcoin works normally, cryptsy is extremely old news that is just confirmed now, and the blocksize issue needs to be solved for Bitcoin to grow and have a future on a greater scale, literally. The time is now. I'm sure this thing will be turned around. As always. Remember, it's Bitcoin, people.

The real reason for the drop is...

...global markets continue to melt, as oil hits 12 year lows, and the whales who move the BTC price sell to cover losses and bottom feed in other sectors.

Are you even aware there is a global economy, and Bitcoin's fiat price is determined in that context?

Or are you so fixated on Blockstream all other matters fade into the background, as your obsession increases your derangement to the point where you are reduced to ranting about  an absurd, utopian scenario wherein "the fork goes off without a hitch?"

Tell us more about how _Classic's contentious hard fork will be a cakewalk, and the conquering Gavinista heroes will be greeted as liberators with roses, candy, and ticker tape parades.

You're a fool if you think that the price crashed because oil went below $30. It went down because a hard fork this spring now looks very likely, that means uncertainty, am I repeating myself...?

With 75% of the hashes needed, what kind of hitches should I expect aside from some petty DoS'ing and some cheap "rage dumped" coinz? Maybe use guise will spam the mempool and donate some fees to the miners? Unfortunate that it will be slightly more expensive at 2MB.  :'(

I gotta tell you, I had a hard on for most of the day with all this bitcoin action.

I don't know Mike Hearn from Adam, but so long.  The Cryptsy thing is very interesting to me, as they were the second exchange I'd used and they worked very well for a while.  The story about getting hacked...eh, we've heard that before and I'm skeptical.  To put it nicely.

My nuts weren't sagging today.  I bought bitcoin.

it has always been like this. a bad news spreads like wildfire, especially since most of the news sites are loving the drama, the make it bigger with articles with titles like "bitcoin is dead" is going to disturb the market. but as always this is temporary and is going to pass. and then again a while later another news and same story again.

If one person's comment can kill bitcoin then it deserves to die. I don't really believe that this kills bitcoin. However, things are a bit suspicious about the timing (with cryptsy, etc) to make this announcement. Let this be a test of its resiliance.

While this does not kill bitcoin, it does have some impact. It is sad is to have a core developer of bitcoinj leave. The recent increase in adoption is because of SPV clients... Personally I found bitcoinj to be an immensely useful library. We definitely need more Java clients so this does not become a single point of failure. If we had several other alternatives then this would not be a big deal. Lets get to that situation where no single developer can manipulate the prices.

About Mike Hearn, so glad that ass s finally out. Spreading FUD about BTC after he sold his coins, that s really low.

Regarding Cryptsy, I m sorry they went down, crypto needs more good exchange and if the reason for their doom is that hack, they should ve found a way to disclose it in a controlled manner. This 18 months long silence could ve ended only in one way.

Such BS. If Mike was so wrong and a hindrance to the project... the market would have rallied with the news he was quitting Bitcoin for good.
That's an invalid conclusion. Did you think SilkRoad existence was good for Bitcoin? Yet when it closed, there was a massive dump. And a massive rally a month or so later. These kinds of dumps are not because people sell coins based on informed decisions, it's because people panic on (perceived) uncertainty and over-react.

So does Mike take his gay little midget 'Gavin' with him or will Gavino still stick around to kill the fun for everyone?
Would really be good to get those suckers out for good. They use up a shit ton of attention for their crying. Gavin/Hearn are completely unproductive scum. Get the suckers out ASAP. Officially! I want to buy back in now!
