I was reading about a 5 bitcoin treasure hunt going on in the deep web this morning.  I thought maybe someone here might be running the game. Clues were posted yesterday in the "not evil" tor search site troll box. However, the original information is missing because the info cycles as new chat channels start. Anyone have info on it?  The only clue available left was this:

No one seems to know anything more. 

looks like a private key in hex format:

which translates to base58:

 but it's not a private key ;(

Agreed. I think Dalek and xhomerox10 found good leads.  My guess is that those values decode into a hint of what to do next. Maybe an IP address or password? The link posed from Dalek points to a group working on it as well.

I was doing research on online treasure hunts here in this forum and on reddit when I stumbled across the 5btc treasure hunt. I'm planning on doing one myself for the game I'm building. I'm wondering if the deep web hunt is really this hunt: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=766000.460

Strange. When you put the two hashes together, it becomes a Base58 encoded text. Once decrypted, you get this HEX value;
44E9C30EF2EE5EFD5143A0FC9020C71B104BF393AE90EAC7E3045A657D5ADB84
Not sure what to do with it.
On the other hand, the hashes can be considered MD5. I ran a brute force attack and got these results;

Can't seem to get any information from them. Gotta keep looking :p

We found a loose end of the string but we're missing what clues came before this. Your brute force attack on the hashes look interesting, maybe a word jumble? Also the Base58 looks like a good lead as well with it being base58. Maybe its a privatekey for an altcoin or it means something else.

I've tried to import the following private keys;

Both were empty, brand new addresses so they aren't private keys. Might have to search an Altcoin to see if this is a private key for any alt, but I don't use any so I don't have a wallet. Sucks, would be better if we had the actual info. The two cracked hashes might be a password to a wallet identifier? It's possible that the hashes give access to a wallet & the password is something like CayseBlanco

Found something else, I shut down my VM earlier so I can't run a brute force attack on this.
Putting the two seperate hashes & making them one gives you a SHA256 hash, which may or may not help with the puzzle once cracked.

Sure... sounds good. I can't imagine it's on some island off of Africa... at least I hope not :|

Could not be the solution in the words instead of in the numbers ? Most of times people try to decode it using softwares in the hope to find a private key or something else. But couldn't it be some indication about pages in a book or something else ? It may seems a bit excessive in the encryption, but it may be a thing of this kind I think. However, it seems improbable, but maybe...

I'm in for helping you like your suggestion says. I like a good challenge and I just came across this a short bit ago. So let me know if your interested and if you are working with anyone else.

I think I need some more hunts. It is too difficult to guess with such limited information. :(

Putting two clues together gives you 2 SHA256 hashes. Cracking these might give you an answer to what the next clue is.

i could be entirely way off the beaten track but somethings telling me we are looking for a wallet address, and a signature to a signed message containing clue number 2, basically looking at the variables from the pastebin hope this helps get to the next step :)

Maybe a brain wallet or something... Someone used to run a website where there were 10BTC and 20BTC challenges to guess the passwords, but I think the site is offline now. This might lead to something similar.  I think i'm moving on from this hunt for now, I can't seem to find any more clues to get to the next step.
