Title: [PSA] Avoid going to jail, avoid blockchain.info - IPs stored even "send anonymo
Post by: 🏰 TradeFortress 🏰 on December 23, 2012, 11:33:05 AM
Just a warning to people who uses certain sites that may be illegal in certain jurisdictions. Blockchain.info is a great wallet, and this isn't about the recent drama (that's over with). What this is about is about some certain use of btc.

Do not use Blockchain.info wallets, as personally identifiable information is accessable to admins, which means a subpoena = you getting a illegal drug / money laundering charge.

What other information could be used to identify a wallet
We store the ip address a wallet was created with and the ip address a wallet was last updated with.

A wallet can be looked up by SMS number or email if that information has been added in [Account Settings].

Nikolaos,

I looked up your address with Blockchain, and %100 for sure the funds were sent to a Bitcoin address that you control.

Here is the proof of the link to your account corresponding with Bitcoin address: 1H4UR5M72Ybpo4zrqWe8JKKYSeN1gxqBcU

Email, secret phrases, IP addresses, SMS numbers can be all used by the feds to get your ass in jail. So if you're thinking of doing that, make sure to not use blockchain.info as the send anonymously function will not clear out your IP addresses / etc.

Yes, I think if someone want to commit some crime, just don't use blockchain.info. it is not private at all. The admin can see the records of IP and handle them to police, how strange it is.

There are more evidence clues/evidence blockchain.info can deliver to police. for example, who has (first) check the transactions of certain address: you check the address for a reason, and you know the address for a reason. So, you have to explain, how did you know the existence of the address, and why did you want to check it. Maybe it is not an evidence, but it is enough a clue for the police to talk to you.

combining the normal taint analysis, the IP records of the page view will give much more information to know about the linkage between addresses and identity.

The police can combine all the IP recording of blockchain.info and blockexplorer.com, it will even more powerful.

However, I guess normal people who are not doing crime should not feel afraid of this.

Ok, I see what you mean.

If that level of anonymity is important to you:

Do not use BitInstant, mtGox, Intersango, Bitfloor, or LocalBitcoins.com.  Do not engage in any transaction where you will be providing a shipping address (even if you supply a fake address).  Do not spend or receive bitcoins in any situation where you will meet in person with the person you are engaging in business with.

EDIT: As of 2013-04-17 BitFloor has ceased all operations.

Solution is simple: do not commit any crime in the first place, You translated what happened completely wrong
This does not mean that im against you or against blockchain.

1- Make new anonymous account behind Tor
2- Mix coins
3- Repeat 1-2 if you're paranoid
4- ???
5- Profit

+1, it's quite easy. Joe23 used electrum for anonymous payments. See this thread for more info: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=120918.0. Basically just use electrum (or blockchain.info for that matter) through tor and use coins that can't be linked to you (clean through mixer)
