Title: New Forum
Post by: rupy on January 17, 2016, 11:57:49 PM
I remember way back there was some plan to build a new forum, obviously that never happened.

Is it still interesting to the owners of bitcointalk.org?

AFAIK, the development is still ongoing.
Was there a statement that they stopped?

For your citation(reference), the Beta version of the forum is under development -> https://beta.bitcointalk.org . Expect it to be released soon (in a couple of months)

Is this a public beta? In other words, can we join this beta forum???
And, will the posts made in the beta version be erased?

Is this a public beta?
No, it isn't officially released for the public.
In other words, can we join this beta forum???
Create a new account on the beta forum to test the forum.

And, will the posts made in the beta version be erased?
Yep, in other words, posts made in beta won't be forwarded to this official forum.

FYI , you shouldn't use the beta extensively(As it may cause problems) , only start "testing" it after it is publicly released. -Theymos

I've noticed that the beta of the new forum only lets you view topics after you have signed in; is this just for the beta or will this be a permanent feature?
Does anyone know if it will allow guests and people who don't have an account to view the forums without signing in?

Basically, it allows posting in topics/threads. You're surfing the beta forum with an older browser, I guess.

It's under development mode ; Let theymos decide.
P.S. He'll do some micro updates for sure.

If guests and people who don't have an account could view the beta forums the Google spider would index them, and beta forum page links would start showing in Google searches. That might be why Theymos decided to only allow logged in users to view the beta.

doesn't google follow the robots.txt directives? Not that it's really my concern tough, anything Theymos decides is OK with me (on the subject of the new forum i might add)

Two reason we're not making the forum public without login, and this is one of them. The other is to discourage use of the beta until we're ready for you guys.

Google does and quite well actually. We're actually hoping that they can also crawl JS built pages as well since this is a single page app.

Oooo Exciting! I hope it looks fancy  :P

Also I hope some things that are little annoyances about this forum are fixed.

I hope that it is at-least as readable as this forum. The default theme for SMF (that Bitcoin Talk Uses) is very clean clear. Using borders and different shading between posts is nice on the eyes.

Honestly, the organde-whitr theme hurt my eyes a lot when reading it at night with my phone. It isn't structured as good as smf. I basically scroll over a thread and lose my coordination over the thread, because of the "all organge-white-black" theme. I can't see a difference between continuous posts, because there is only a very thin grey line between each post, and no shading at all.
I hope there will be improvements on this (classic theme, night mode etc)

Also, it doesn't seem to have any signature, avatar restrictions.

According to this post:

When we was saying that the forum design suck and don't look pretty good , we got told that this is more then likely not the last changes on the forum and there will be more so it shouldn't look like this , so are you sure that the screenshots you posted are from the final version ? Because if it's the case then I will be more then dissapointed and this is definitely not the work of a 1.5 million dollar forum .

The design has changed a bit since those images were taken. However, the theming engine is should be almost done by now.

There will be the ability to theme the new forum once it is done. I'm going to assume that even more themes are going to be developed after it's release by third parties, as the forum software will be open source.

There probably will be signature and avatar restrictions on the new forum once it is complete; not all the features have been added in yet.

Good to hear it's still in the works, as I haven't read much about changing over lately.  I do like the setup of this forum--it's simple and uncluttered, unlike a lot of other ones.  There are some forums that are just horrible to look at and use.

I do miss the old scammer tags, though.
