Title: Is 90..95 *C safe for Radeon HD 5770?
Post by: Raegdan on December 25, 2012, 10:35:02 AM
Hi everyone,

I mine btc using Diablo Miner on Radeon 5770. It's GIGABYTE branded card in a closed case with a turbine fan:

http://techreport.com/r.x/radeon-hd-5700/card-5770-3q.jpg

It heats up to 90..95 *C even with 100% fan speed. Air temperature is about 20 *C, PC chassis is opened because side covers are lost (I found this chassis in garbage).

So I have 2 questions:
1) Is it safe for 24/7 mining?
2) Is it normal, or m.b. I need to clean the video card inside, change thermal paste, etc.?

Thanks!

Thats too hot. 80c or below should be your target. Changing the thermal paste might help as can clearing the dust, I've managed to drop 5c with it on some occations, sometimes makes no difference. Lovering clocks and voltage are the next step I guess, assuming that the fan is at 100% allready.

TOO HOT!!!! Woah! Way to hot for a 5770.
I run mine in the 75-81°c range
(Btw its Alt+num2,num4,num8 for the degree sign) °<-Hold alt, Tap 248 on your numberpad, Letgo of Alt

84°C is the warmest you should let your card run for long term. Try removing the side cover.

...and alt+0176  :P

90°+ is way too hot! You could try a second fan blowing cool out-of-case air toward the fan on the card. That's usually good for a few degrees.

That's definitely on the hot side, you should aim to keep it below 80°C, 85°C max. My HD 5870 runs at 81°C when mining at 915MHz, the fan is spinning at only 33% speed. Try cleaning the heatsink, there is probably a big wall of dust right where the fan blows the air into the heatsink.

I have my fans set to be at 100% if it hits 60oC...  Some people say all this junk about fans dying so easily if they're at 100% constantly, but I've had 5 fans die out of ~15 cards running non-stop for the last 10 months.... you can always buy a replacement fan for $10, too.

all the rejections cause of p2pool.  that card is running at 50oC right now...  but just because it's in like 40o ambient temp =p

i don't like it when my cards go above 80oC.  that includes any of the GPU sensors... if you don't have a good thermal paste job, your main sensor could read 65oC, but you could have another sensor at 85oC..  i've had a few like that that I've gotten from ebay.   you should get those all within 10oC (ideally within 5oC)...  the VRM temps, I don't like them being above 100oC, but it doesn't BOTHER me until they get to 110oC.

Thanks everyone for answers, I've figured this problem out.
It was damn dust that filled the radiator inside. After cleaning I have about 60.
Thanks!

Also, Fans arent entierly meant to be run at 100%, The blades are built (usually) to run at 85% 24/7, with headroom for temperature ambience
