Title: Traveling in India, what can I do with Bitcoins?
Post by: Superior on December 26, 2012, 07:56:15 PM
I might be traveling to India soon for a couple of months, what can I do with my Bitcoins there?
Can I exchange my Bitcoin to Rupee, can I buy stuff?

Also I need internet-access to my laptop, can I buy that with Bitcoins? If not, how much does it cost for a stable internet-connection on my Laptop?

Thanks for any help.

Hi - while you are in India I can exchange your Bitcoin for Indian Rupees by sending you a MoneyGram payment from the UK. The GBP pounds get converted to Indian Rupees. If you have any issues converted Bitcoin to rupees let me know. Best regards.

Can mostly sell Bitcoins here for now. Unless you have a specific item request that someone can buy in Fiat and sell in BTC.

Register on localbitcoins and leave a post of your dates and cities here and there should be a good response to it.

Cannot buy Internet with BTC yet. But there is a place to recharge your prepaid phone with BTC.

India has some of the lowest costs for Internet Services across the world.

$10 - $20 should easily buy you a months worth of stable internet.

Where in India do you want to use bitcoins? AFAIK, no one in India accepts Bitcoins yet (though this is expected to change in the near future).
I think the best solution would be to buy INR for BTC and use them as you want.
If in Bangalore I could buy a couple of BTC off you for INR.

For the net I think you are better off getting a prepaid 3G connection. This you can probably get through BTC (as Benson says). If not, should not be much anyway.. Under 1-2 BTC equivalent

Thanks for all the information.

I don't know where I am going but probably spend a couple of months just traveling and hire a place to live for a while.

Will be planning projects online while visiting, so keeping my tablet updated with all the reading I want to do and having a good connection for my laptop is important.
I'm definitely ready to pay up to 50$ per month for something that works, seems like India is great :)

I'll be sure to contact you guys if I want some INR vs Bitcoins!

Not to crash in on your thread, but I am interested in the same thing this fall. Especially anyone in South Eastern India. Looking for rupees, horse rentals, and wildlife trackers.

This new service seems awesome for prepaid phonecards:
http://www.bitcoinwireless.com/

Currently looking for information about 3G/4G USB mobile and how good it works at different locations, prices and possibly if there is a way to fund them with BTC.

I am definitely going to be a customer when they hard-launch! But I hadn't thought about it for travel? Perhaps I could buy a $10 phone when I'm there and load it up. Hmmm...

It used to be that buying gold jewelry in India was cheaper than buying coins or bullions. Is it still so?

Your best bet is to convert to your local currency first, and then convert at airport (or other) money exchange service, unless you specifically love to experience the hassle.

What hassles will he face if someone is giving him local currencies for Bitcoins ?

Since btc is not very popular, it will involve finding interested party and travelling to meeting point - which is not very convenient in India; since he wants to cash in on btc to fund his stay in India, relying on the conversion on meetup may prove to be a hassle if there is any immediate need.

You could try dropping a Cascasius into some beggar's bowl and see how he reacts.

Buy some medical insurance before that, since the beggar will feel highly insulted by the junk dropping.

I take that as an insult to our country.  :-[
