Title: [stopped] btcmsg.net - a concept
Post by: qworty on June 08, 2011, 05:38:10 AM
[stopped]

Hello,

After reading for a while now on this board i got an idea.
It is still an concept but I thought I would share this here to see if there is any demand for it.
For now i am planning to keep this service free and work on donations.

The idea
Post your bitcoinaddress with a message
People receiving your transfer can go to the website and enter the bitcoinaddress
If the user left a message it will show up
Example:

Also the timestamp is in GMT +2 since my server is located there.
(That would be an improvement to give the UTC time, or no time at all)
That is my bitcoinaddress and there are a couple of messages posted.

What do you guys think?
It is still in a very early phase, but if there is demand I could expand the service.

Regards

Qworty

I think this is a great idea, since you can't send any messages with the one you are trading at mtgox. But now if someone buys/sells from you, you can send them a message.

This definitely is a great addition to trading at anonymous markets such as mtgox.
As the bitcoin will become more popular, so is the need to communicate with each other about bigger prices. After all a $1000 is a large number, and if I receive this from a person I would like to thank him.

I'm a PHP programmer if you need any help developing this. I like the concept.

Thanks for your offer, if you have any suggestions i would like to hear them.
For the developing part I'm fine for now, made this in 15 minutes just as a concept (not intended to be offensive) .
Minor bugfix if a btcaddr was set in the addressbar the post would not submit.

That is a foul trick, just to copy someone's concept and develop your own.
Why you just can't think anything for yourself?

Would it not be better to put a message with the other person's receive address, as I believe you can't always tell what the send address is going to be?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

You could just as well use a pastebin, and set up a short URL with the bitcoin address. Less likely to go down than some random dude's LAMP server. ;)

I like it, but I would like more an option of attaching a message to a transaction.

That is true, bit a system like this works when everybody knows where to find it, that's what I'm trying to create.
That's the whole concept idea, just plant an idea to see if people like it and then develop it further.

Would it not be better to put a message with the other person's receive address, as I believe you can't always tell what the send address is going to be?

Correct me if I'm wrong.
That probably is true, I also thought of that, can already be used it that way, and I think it should indeed.

Really important idea  to prevent a man-in-the-middle attack:

http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=14045.msg191496#msg191496

-- if you send some bitcoin, you might want to interact with the recipient about where to send goods. (either before or after the purchase) - you want to talk with a bitcoin address

-- with paypal you can have an email address to send money, which is the same as the one you interact with. But on bitcoin, you could now interact with an email address, but end up sending to a different person altogether in a scam, so the person you interact with gets the goods from the person you sent the money (who should've sent to you)
