Title: fix my Ubuntu 3.5BTC reward
Post by: tiptopgemdotcom on December 29, 2012, 06:27:50 AM
I did an upgrade and now Ubuntu will not boot.  If you can fix it, I will pay you 2.5BTC.  Probably you need to be damn good with Ubuntu and you need to be able to tell me in English (normal-people English, not technical speak) how to fix it.

Send me a note at dave@tiptopgem.com

That same thing happened to me when updating from 11.04 to 11.10. Was an easy fix, don't remember anymore exactly what, but it was something as simple as deleting/editing a couple files.

I had the same experience with Ubuntu a while ago, this solved it for me https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

I recommend using the "1st option", make a CD with Boot-Repair if you don't have the knowledge to install it by hand. Hope it helps

I am bumping this up to 3.5BTC.  The only catch is you only have 48 hours to solve it.  This is obviously not an easy fix- everyone gives up after a day or two.  Send me a message at dave@tiptopgem.com if you are seriously interested and have the time to devote to this.  I will warn you up front- unless you really know your stuff you will not be able to do it.  The "experts" have been dropping like flies.

If you have backed up all important files (via double booting with other OS or else), you should just reinstall your copy of Ubuntu to solve this easily.

Hard to say without much description of the problem, but it could be a problem with Grub (the bootloader).

Try burning this to a CD: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/super-grub2-disk/

Direct download link: http://download.berlios.de/supergrub/super_grub2_disk_hybrid_2.00s1-beta1.iso

Burn it to a CD and boot from it like you did when originally installing Ubuntu. Then ask it to detect operating systems. If it shows Ubuntu, select that and see if it boots.

Report back if it works. :)

back up data, do fresh install. </without even looking, i'll take my btc plz>
no, seriously, there's no reason to waste time trying to figure out what's up, if the box doesn't boot and he doesn't have the time or wherewithal to do it himself. (if it doesn't boot, nobody can exactly ssh into the box and look around).
just boot from a usb stick, back up all the files, then wipe and do a fresh install.

You give very little information for someone to be able to solve your problem without it being a wild guess.

You said you upgraded, but you never say between which versions of Ubuntu or if not between versions which packages were upgraded.
Computer/Laptop brand and model can also help.

The problem I described I had, it was when upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10.

No, I get two modprobe failures ("FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/3.2.0-33-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory")

Psy I think you missed the point of my thread.  I posted this because I want to find a person who wants to do this for 3.5BTC.  I am not asking anything of you at all.
