B-b-b-but I thought Bitcoin was dead?! I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Bitcoins are going to be around at least another 10 years :)

Buying such large assets with Bitcoin is really exciting. I'd also love to see the ability to purchase real estate, buildings and plant & machinery with Bitcoins. This way manufacturing units will be able to deal in payments using Bitcoins and save tonnes in overhead charges.

I think that the company that sold the car used a company that allows customers to pay with bitcoins and seller receive fiat money. The car dealers make a good deal, sold an expensive car and now have free publicity on bitcoin new media.

I'm pretty sure he meant Tesla. Probably just a typo.
Anyway, the company will be rich in the future if they hold the Bitcoins for another few years. :O

That's great news for BTCitcoin as a whole. IIRC there was a Chinese guy on a Chinese forum who put an ad for selling his Tesla car for BTCitcoin as well (Not sure if he manage to sell though) and then this news come out. From what I've known from Jamie, he will still find excuses to damage BTCitcoin image.

there was a chinese selling one but for a greater price, i'm wondering if he was able to sell it in the end

i believe it's betetr if they use their coins directly instead of dumping for fiat and buying then a car, maybe those website can offer some form of discount to encourage directly spending of bitcoin

It is already possible. The ability to transact in Bitcoin between two real persons depends on their will to accept Bitcoin as the currency of their trade. If they both agree to accept Bitcoin, you can buy anything in bitcoins.

It is very likely that they will rebuy the coins long before their value increases massively.

It could also be that they bought the coins specifically to purchase the car and would otherwise never have been in their possession.

Well, maybe they were thinking that BTC is about to crash, so they abandon the ship. This is what I see. They could have keep their coins, but they chose to spend them. Actually, I think they were wrong, a new car is sure to depreciate way more than BTC.

This is great news. That is what bitcoin need, positive news. People will now ask how its possible, and I think they will fall on ass when they see its just around 400 coins.

I want a tesla too, but I couldn't afford a second hand milk float with the amount of Bitcoins I have.

Tesla uses an intermediary company (Bitcoinkaupat.com) between itself and Bitpay to process Bitcoin payments, so they would have immediately got fiat for the car. It has overheads to pay so it can't speculate on the future price of Bitcoin. Wages and suppliers need paying.

Interest rates are so low right now that it doesn't make sense to buy a car with cash. The smarter thing to do would be get a loan using bitcoins for the down payment, and then sell the rest of the bitcoins for euros and invest the euros.

BTW, it is not the first Tesla to be bought with bitcoins.

Yes but did they actually get paid in bitcoin or did they process it through a third party that allows customers to pay with bitcoins, while the seller receives fiat? There is a difference.

Though this event is bound to rile up some publicity for bitcoin either way :)

or some sticker in the rear window, saying " Bitcoin is Alive! " or " Bought with Bitcoin " I just want people to know that it was bought with Bitcoin.

Tesla is a great car, and I also want one. It would be great if they throw in a PowerWall too. ^smile^

Except for the fact that the transaction immediately got converted to fiat.. Tesla can't just accept bitcoin for a car and put that on their books.

The board of the the company would not approve and at this moment that would be the same as speculating with company money. Which is ofcourse a big no no.

These are the news that sadly bypass the mainstream media. If you see it's all negative press, the common person when it thinks of Bitcoin is just confused or relate it to something negative, either illegal drugs, terrorism, hackers, cyber heists, scams, etc. I can sort of understand it since that's all they usually get, hopefully things like this happen more frenquently and get properly covered.

Actually electricity batteries aren't that profitable yet, they will be in the future. I think it was a stupid purchase unless you are rich. I mean 140K in bitcoin, only in 5 years will be a massive fortune, let alone 10.
Not worth it for a fancy car.

Tesla has big plans for their car batteries.

Imagine having a good amount of solar power available on your roof, but during the day you are hardly using electricity, and in the evening, when you need it the most, your solar cells are not providing electricity.

Wouldn't it be great if you could tap into your cars batteries, which you charged for free at work, during the night for the power you need? An average, non bitcoin mining, household would probably use less than 10 kwh during that time, which you could easily tap from the cars reserves if you don't have to drive too far.

The company that sold the car used a service that converts bitcoins to fiat money at the moment of the transaction. Its possible that the user that bought the car had a lot of money (if not you don't buy a car that cost 140.000 dollars) and could bought another time some bitcoins.

Loads of new cars out there are driven with manufacturer problems and people do not even know it. As soon as these things are reported, it gets investigated and if it was attributed to the car, the manufacturer will recall the cars to be re-fitted with a replacement part. These things just happen.

It could also have been a problem with the charging station and not the car.  ::)

If Bitcoins later goes up so it was a shame to spend it on the Tesla.

This sounds like great news, until you realize that they bought the Tesla with bitcoins through a payment processor. The Tesla dealer did not accept the

bitcoins directly as payment, but BitPay converted it to fiat and they received it in fiat. The day when Tesla announce that they accept Bitcoin payments

directly, I would jump for joy. Elon Musk must finish the HyperLoop and accept bitcoin as payment for tickets, then I would be satisfied.  ;D

How soon we forget....

I have to say that is much more interesting than the Tesla, because it was earlier and because it was more expensive. By the way, thsis was "officially" 3 years ago ;) !

What is the difference if they received the converted bitcoins to fiat via a payment processor like BitPay or bitcoins directly to their wallet? They will need to use an exchange anyways to convert to cash.

If you use have prices in fiat currency and you use a payment processor you know that you will receive the exact price in your fiat currency (you can request the fiat price and the payment processor ask the bitcoin user the price in bitcoins). If you use your wallet you will need to sell them on exchange (and you would receive more fiat or less depending on exchange actual rates).

All those stories are the kind of stories that make me wanna hold btc for at least 3 more years. I think that's a pretty fair time range, considering all the improvements that are being made on the blockchain technology.

I heard someone's Tesla caught flames in Norway while being charged at a charging station.
Oh yeah. I also heard that story. It is really unfortunate as it tarnishes Tesla's reputation.

Tesla's are maybe one of the worst because they have batteries which are highly flammable.

They'll be very rich in few years later if they hold their bitcoin :o
If this news on mainstream media, people might think bitcoin isn't dead.

Maybe in future, people could buy an island or huge company only with bitcoin
You can buy an island and mansion with bitcoin already, but the demand was low so until now i don't think anyone buy it yet :P

This is Tesla who owned by Elon Musk right ?
I think he made the right decision by investing in Bitcoin, the price is pretty low when compared to the $400 we had few weeks ago ;)
I think his Business sense is tingling and told him to invest in Bitcoin :P

This don't surprise me at all that no one bought something yet. A lot of things are way overpriced !

Well the publicity is good, but have I missed something here? Didn't the car sales company use a 3rd party to pay them in Euros? If this is the case, then it just another sale of a car for Euros. If the company had accepted the Bitcoin directly, and used those coins to pay some of their costs, then that would be the real revolution.
Many years ago Control Data Corporation sold a large mainframe computer to Russia. As Russia didn't have the money to pay for it, they swopped it for many millions of Christmas cards that they printed. CDC set up a company to sell these cards to recover their money, and no doubt made a nice extra profit from them. Howeveer, this deal didn't mean that Christmas cards were the new international currency.

Yes, but the car dealer gave the possibility to pay with bitcoins (i don't see any problem if they use a third part company to redeem bitcoins to fiat, if not they will do it in an exchange). Its publicity, as more dealers accept payment with bitcoins, more publicity about bitcoin as a payment system. If you read the forum a lot of users say that there are few stores that accept bitcoins, we need more stores that accept them as a payment.

Awsome. It is really cool, because of the low transaction fees. It would probably cost like 1% if it was bought with bank account, and even more if with credit card.
