Title: Lepa G1600W PSU for Antminer S7 - Can't power it on ! Bounty 0.05 BTC
Post by: vortexz on January 27, 2016, 05:13:06 PM
I have multiple Antminer S7, with multiple PSU's from corsair, EVGA, coolmaster, running 4 Antminer S7

Today my 5th Antminer S7 has arrived and I have also bought a 5th PSU for it
I got it brand new, connected all 10 PCI-e PINS to the S7, the MB cable, put the paperclip switch to it and tried to turn it on ... surprise, it won't work

Anyone has any experience with this PSU ? I have noticed the MB cable is a bit different than at my other PSU's
The MB cable is split in 2 in the part where it comes into the PSU, and 1 part has 12 small slots

here are the pictures of the MB cable :

I will give 0.05 BTC to whoever helps me solve the mistery !

The socket starts with rounded-square-square-rounded-rounded but from the pictures i see your plug doesn't?

Looks like you need to make contact between the 2 round at the ''clip'' side of the mobo connector on the psu!

Do not connect to the last 2 as they are red!!!!(5volts?)

Does the PSU turn on at all? A bit unclear if both do not turn on or if only the miner does not turn on.

The PSU does not turn ON at all!
The S7 miner works just fine, I tested it with another PSU

it finally powered ON, when no cable was attached to the MINER
then I powered it off, I connected it to the miner and after a minute or too it powered off again

sounds like rail overload? try just 2 blades, not all 3!

I would get a PSU tester from amazon, you can get it pretty cheap or you can go nicer with PCIE testers and LCD.   That will allow you to measure current if it's working at all.

But if it truly is not powering on check and make sure paperclip is making contact with metal within it.  Make sure you have on a right combination of 2 wires.   And if that does not work you likely will need to email manufacture.

Should really not be an issue.

Some cables i've had were weird and i had to mess around them with the multimeter before they worked. Not sure whats up with that.

I tried powering only 2 blades and it seems to be working ...
seems the G1600w Can't handle 1400W...

It should be handling up to 1775w at the wall or something. Its a shitty multirail PSU.

So you're going to have to spread to load among the multi rail properly to run it. Then it should run fine.

Told him already :)

You need 8pin cpu to 6pin vga to pull 12v from the 2 20A rails, v1 and v2

I can test it on batch 8, already working on batch 7

Why? He can just spread the load on the 30a's. Could slap the controller on a 20a but not obligatory.

because 4 rails of 30A give only 1200watt and batch 8 eats over 1300watt

...huh nope.

30A*12 = 360w per rail, time 4 equal 1440w for the 4 rails. And the DC draw is under 1300watts for the 3 blades at stock settings. At the wall you will get 1430W~ At 40% fan speed or so.

my bad! sorry
i like to spread it better and not risk it.
why would i burn an 200$ psu!?!?

maybe the fact that it's not working on those 4rails it's saying that 30a is not really 30a....

I've burn 2 LEPA 1600PSu's in my S7, the first one worked for about 5 minutes, the second not even 1, replaced it with an EVGA 1300.
Its a shitty PSU, Tupsu warned me, he have burn some too, but I had already purchased it...
IMO you should get a server PSU or an EVGA G2.

No argument there. Multi-rail PSU is a dead giveaway. Its not too bad according to Johnny guru but even the EVGA g2 1300w would of most likely been a much better pick.

I set the S7 to 675 MHz and it's running stable ... for now
Hopefully the shitty lepa can handle an S7 b8 at 675 Mhz...

Oh great, I just bought this PSU for my S7 that I will be powering up tomorrow night and NOW I read this thread...  :-\

Well, I'll give it my best shot and report back on whether or not I can get it running properly.  I will say that I'll be UC the S7 slightly to keep electrical $$ within reasonable limits.

At least it was an "open box" special from Frys, and I've never returned things to Frys, eh?  ::)

It would work just fine if you properly connect the right connectors to the right rails. Its a hassle having to balance the rails, but it will work just fine if you do.

Thanks, I figured as much but it's just one more thing to worry about!

Cheers, keep calm and mine on!

Ok, got it up running and so far it is stable. I am running UC at 543 instead of stock 700 so there's a drop in power need there for sure.  Looking at how the lepa has 6 output sockets assigned to 4 30A rails is a bit strange and if I wasn't running UC I'd wonder if this unit could handle it based on how the rails are, obviously, doubled up on some of the outputs...

Probably going to return this rube Goldberg designed psu and go with a better unit.  But so far it's running ok, no smoke or any bad smells (yet)!!

The unit is fine, it can run an S7 full speed. The fact its multi rail is annoying but you should have no problem if you do something like 3 individual rails on double and then split a 4th in the 3 blades.

Running it at half load is not necessary.

Tested for few minutes ;D and is ok. The air coming from psu at the lower part was a bit hot...
Low error rate! only 1 in ~5minutes of test :o

Been running a week at ~75% max hash rate (for electrical $$ reasons really, not the PSU) and so far all is well.  Got less than 0.0001% HW and seems fine.
Guess I'll keep it.
YMMV

Well after about a year and a half the Lepa died on me...  The last year it was only running an R4 so nowhere near it's max output, and even less than the S7 it was originally powering.  I find it kinda surprising it would crap out since I wasn't redlining it and it was kept cool indoors since the lack of noise allowed it!
Like I often say, "buy it cheap, buy it twice!"  ::)
