Title: What are the benefits of a Xapo Wallet?
Post by: Wicidith on January 28, 2016, 03:59:48 AM
I am new to Bitcoin and I keep seeing Xapo Wallets mentioned in various places, fairly often. However, I just can't figure out what their benefits are or why someone would want one as opposed to any other type of wallet. Could you please enlighten me? Thanks!

In my opinion, there are absolutely no advantages to having a Xapo wallet.  In fact I'd be willing to bet that folks who know more about bitcoin than I do would say that a Xapo wallet only has disadvantages.  If I'm not mistaken you don't control your private keys, but I could be wrong about that.  I really don't trust any online wallet anyhow--but I do have a Xapo for the faucets that deposit instantly to it.  But that's it.  I keep no bitcoin in my Xapo wallet.

Xapo wallet maybe used for collection of rewards from faucets, compare that the micropayment services that only pay out when you reach a threshold limit.

Other than that, no significant different between Xapo and other wallets.

Barely any faucets send payments to Xapo wallet. Just use like blockchain or something like that.

Just like what The Pharmacist mentioned and to add up to it, some faucets only pay to Xapo wallets (only few of them out there as compared to those who pay to Faucetbox) and as result, their reward is a bit higher but also have this in mind that Xapo does have some countries on restriction or rather blacklist and when you use it, due to your geographical location, there is a chance that your accounts gets blocked in the future if the country your in, fall in to that list all of a sudden so it would be advisable to use blockchain.info wallet instead.

Most people do not have a Xapo wallet, so their comments will be uninformed. If both parties in a transaction have a Xapo wallet, the transfer of any amount between them <off-chain> will be free. This is why most faucet operators use this wallet, because it is the ideal solution for micro payments.

They have a debit card option too, which gives them a bit of a edge over other wallet providers. The security is also very good, but I would still suggest someone to invest in a hardware wallet for bigger amounts of bitcoins.

Thanks for the information brother, I was also thinking what will be benefits from Xapo Wallet. when we have to do the transaction for micro payments it will be best. please let me know what is the process to get a hardware wallet to keep big amount of bitcoins there.

I heard Xapo stores your bitcoins in cold storage in something like a couple of bunkers around the world but I am not sure if it's 100% true :)

Yeah I really don''t know why people even use a xapo wallet. An online wallet like coinbase is better.

the only benefit of XAPO wallet that i can think of is the option to gather faucet dust, since there are few faucets that pay directly to your XAPO wallet. and also the fact that you are using an online wallet (if you count that as a benefit).

Well it depends .If you are a normal bitcoin user and dont hit up faucet then no use of using that site. Most of the faucets are linked up with xapo.
One thing i like the most is XAPO Debit card which is very useful .The reason i like is that because it is the only one which provides debit card in india.

the only one is that the security is handled by them and not by you, if they have some form of insurance this can be good, otherwise not so much, since it would be like riskying your coin like they are on your desktop, if not worse

so only use webwallet with insurance like coinbase for example, they cover your money vs thief/hacker etc...

I didn't heard about it . and if xapo wallet is used for cold storage then it will be good. but without confirmation we can't say anything about it at present.

doesn't matter how they are storing bitcoin. you should only use online wallets if you really have to and only with small amounts.

i don't really see any difference between xapo as a wallet and all those exchangers that claimed they got hacked and people lost their money. they were all claiming to have their bitcoin in cold stored bunkers at first., now look where that got them.

I'm not putting coins into any wallet that has 'terms and conditions'. Pain lies down that road. I've got the tools to look after them myself and I don't have to satisfy no one else.

The only benefit I can see was it doesn't charge any fee when sending bitcoin to external addresses. It is also essential to faucet lovers cuz most of the highest paying faucets only pay directly to xapo wallet.

You are still risking your coins just like a desktop wallet. Coinbase insurance etc, does not cover hacking due to the user's negligence.

No transactions fee and that's it. Xapo and Coinbase are useful for users who receive lots of transactions and do not want to pay a huge fee to move everything. Eg. faucet users. Xapo, being a shared wallet, does not allow users to sign message using their addresses and does not allow users to control their private key. Xapo thus have the rights to freeze your coins and can even monitor your spending habits and Xapo users are no longer pseudonymous.

I only use a coinbase wallet and no xapo wallet. There is no point for it unless you do a lot of faucets.

So far the most transactions are fast processing. I use XAPO most of the time and so far I am really happy with them.

The only advantages of Xapo is their security which is 2FA where the code is sent directly to your phone for hardened security
And they paid for our transaction fees which is useful when sending a large batch of Bitcoin ;)

But if you want the real security try to use hardware wallet which is almost impossible to break, unless you idiotically posted your private keys openly on the internet :P

I've been using Xapo since I started with Bitcoin and I'm very satisfied. They don't charge any fees which is a major pull in my opinion. Their security is good and Bitcoin process is very simplified. For many this is the way to go since it's much more usable than other options. However I can see that there are disadvantages, I wouldn't put too much money there since we all know how these "exchanges" or banks can run with your money. I trust them but with Bitcoin you never know sadly. So for easy transactions and everyday money I think it's perfect, if you have many BTC that you are holding long term then you should be looking at cold storage.

If they run away with your coins, just like TradeFortress did in inputs.io, you can't see your coins again. I think that's not benefit. :D
The point is you can't trust online wallets, if they lose your coins you can't prove anything when you take a legal action. At least I haven't seen any Bitcoin return from court decisions.

Well I'm not sure because with Xapo they send you an email and there's plenty of evidence if you want to save it and take the time. But like I said, it's more like a real wallet, you have day-to-day money not your whole savings and for that it works perfectly. I don't have as many doubts about many of you about Xapo but at the same time I wouldn't trust any Bitcoin online service with my whole share, just a small part of it.

The only benefit is that you don't have to pay fees when sending bitcoins, so you can use it as a mini spending wallet. I personally wouldn't keep that much bitcoins in there, as you actually don't own the private keys. The most I'd keep in there would be 0.05, and I'd use that for buying stuff without paying for tx fees.

Oh yeah, Xapo requires you to verify your identification before you can fully access all its functions (like sending to external addresses), which defeats the purpose of anonymity.

Only two advantages that I know of,

1. They pay your transaction fees, which are obviously not much of a difference if you are rich, but if you make your money from faucets, a normal TX fee is about a day of work.

2. Faucets pay into your wallet instantly.

That is correct. But these features are goo only if you are bitcoin newbie and faucet sucker.
A real feature is Xapo Debit Card - your wallet is linked to a XAPO debit card, allowing for easy use of bitcoin everywhere in day-to-day life.
Personally I would not use it because I find their fees a little too much, but others might find it fine.

i have never liked these Debit cards, my reason is that bitcoin was created to eliminate the third parties for using your money which means you do it on your own by having a wallet and sending the bitcoin peer-to-peer but by using the card you are again relying on a third party just like a bank and have to pay their fee too.

That's true. However, Bitcoin adoption rate is quite low and there is much more places that accepts debit card than Bitcoin. If you want to indirectly spend Bitcoins, this is probably one of the more viable way. Xapo does have a high fee but it is still acceptable to me, considering that I could use the card on the fly with Bitcoin loading.

I have to agree that the primary use for this Debit card is its ease of use, the card is directly linked to your main wallet, so its advised to get a new wallet thats not public knowledge, so whatever is in that wallet is immediately available for withdrawal (like the skrill / Moneybookers account). I have looked at other bitcoin cards and most require a separate loading to get to the coins. And although in many cases anonymity may be the reason for using these digital currencies, this is a one is the easier ways to easily convert ur bcoins to cash

So far I just use coinbase and blockchain accounts. Xapo looks good as I heard that from one Xapo account to another Xapo account it is fees free and instant transactions. But I don't like Xapo's requirement of mandatory mobile verification in case of a digital currency that should best be anonymous.

I think, by using xapo wallet, you don't need to remember the long string i.e., bitcoin address. All you need to get payment is just type the email address (if you're a faucet user) and i think some online wallets like coinbase can able to send to your xapo account directly when you type the email.

Anything other than this? ;D

Yes but you see, most people here want it the other way around because they want to kill the "middle man". And then they wonder why doesn't Bitcoin can't get more exposure and be adopted by common people, the debate is useless. Xapo and other compaines have done what they could to bring Bitcoin to the masses, it's just seem pointless right now.

The benefit of a xapo wallet, of course we can save bitcoins on there and it is include online wallet. Unfortunately we can not control the wallet because of we don't have private key, it will become dangerous for our bitcoins, there are no people who give guarantee xapo wallet will not become scam wallet.

But if a card directly linked to a wallet it's not as safe as it would be if a card must be loaded manually from wallet balance before using. In case a card is stolen someone could spend all available funds from the wallet instead of only funds loaded to a card. Don't you think so?

That is true but I don't use Xapo wallet as a "storage" wallet. I keep theere an amount that I'm planning to spend on the card for a week or so. And that is usualy not much. Loading card for every purchase could be very annoying and unconvenient because of the confirmation time for instance.
But Xapo is extremly easy for spending Bitcoins in everyday life with no transfers, exchanges or other complications whatsoever and that is what I appreciate the most.

What about their cold sotrage, according to their website it looks like a really safe place to store bitcoin, do you use it in some cases?. I mean if it's really safe as they say, I could for example store all my funds there (use it as a "storage" wallet) and transfer only small amounts to "usual" wallet and spend only them using a card. Or their cold storage is more about marketing rather than about security? Actually it's quite hard to imagine how do they manage all that vaults somewhere in the mountains when you withdraw funds and how easy this procedure could be compromised
