Title: Why don't people post their locations
Post by: Jet Cash on January 31, 2016, 02:54:56 PM
So far, my profile is the only one that I have seen that contains a geographic location. I'm not ashamed to be associated with Bitcoin, I don't owe any money, and I don't cheat or steal. I even tell the truth when submitting tax returns. :) Surely I'm not the only one here. :)

Why should they post their locations? If someone doesn't feel comfortable to post it ... it's his choice.

I don't see that you posted your location (the completely address and zip code). Everyone has it's own preference to post or not the location.

Location:    Hampshire,England

That's what OP put.

So we know the following:

1. Your username
2. You are associated with Bitcoin
3. You probably don't owe any money
4. You probably don't cheat or steal
5. You probably tell the truth when submitting tax returns
6. You probably pay tax
7. You are not the only one
8. And your location is in England

No one cares, really.

People are free to set up their profile to the level they want.

Most of the people love their privacy enough to keep it secret from the public.

The internet is a very hostile place which is one of the sole reasons why people protect their privacy.

Location can be useful for a number of reasons

1. I'd like to buy Bitcoinsfor cash, and that requires a face to face meeting. ( that's my restriction). So it's no good me trying to arrange a transfer with someone from the US (say).

2. People ask questions about Bitcoin use. Bitcoin restrictions vary from country to country, it would be helpful if one knew which rules applied to the poster.

3. I'm in England, and I recently bought a notebook for under £400. I thought that was cheap, and offered good value. It would probably have been cheaper in the US, and £400 may not be cheap to people in other countries.

4. If you want to build trust, then I think it is best to be open about things. However, this can be a bit dangerous on the net if you piss someone off for some reason.

I agree with that completely. However, if you are touting for trades, and those include reversible transactions, some degree of traceability would help to build trust.

It will help to make yourself or an other person a bit more trusted but it still is not a guarantee that you will not be scammed.

Using an escrow will offer a good enough security to reduce the chances of getting scammed here on this forum.

Anonymity on the Internet is important - there is a danger associated with providing personal information online. As well as this, if you build up a reputation (either good or bad) then people can link that to your real self and there may be some slight problems that happen. If you have an altercation with someone online and they are able to find you in real life, then that's an issue.

People are paranoid around here, and rightfully so.  It seems like any sort of info that could be used against you will be used against you at some point.  Plus, this is bitcoin and the reality is that a lot of folks are into illegal things and don't want any personal details out there.

You're not the only one. I have mine displayed too, but I don't blame the people who don't want to reveal identifying information. There are people here that will latch onto personal information and become creepy, weird, or even dangerous.

It's never really occurred to me to put my location down. I can possibly see the point if you're trading but even then you'd put that in a thread. I don't want shape shifting lizards arriving at my door to suck my brains out so I may as well make them work for it a little.

This is a forum where every users are anonymous.
Why should one bother to share his geo location to pseudo-expose his place of living?

Generally most people fear of not sharing geographic locations because of taxes and all but at the end of the day that is their choice. Nobody should force to update them.

Problem is not to stay anon because you are afraid of thieves and hackers..
It is just our right, and we are using it..
I don't want to reveal any of my info. Only to those members i accomplish trust relationship..

I too dont want to conceal my location but what difference does it makes anyway if we know eachothers location? The world has become a global village it doesn't make any difference where you live on this planet or eve if you belong to some other world ;)

I guess people don't post their exact location for the same reason you tell your kids to be careful online. There are a lot of freaks on the internet.

I posted my exact location in my profile.

Seriously though: personally, I'm not trying to hide or be anonymous in regards to my support of bitcoin
but not everyone online is completely "hinged" so keeping some information to oneself may be a preference for some people.

P.S.
I have at one point participated in a real estate forum with ALL of my info available for years.
My office location and contact info were in my profile and at the time my personal residence and an investment property were listed for sale
So this "unhinged" person decided to call me at all hours and remind me that he knew where I lived *forgot to add and that he had access to lockboxes (the little thingy that we code electronically to keep house keys in.)
(not a troll ;-) a true crazy person.

Post your location if you like.

There is no need to know my location and who wants to know it already kows it. I can say that I am currently living in a different country from the one I was born in.
I like the idea of the old internet (only a nickname, an alias) not the new one (facebook and else).
Of course it has its pros and cons but I don't like the "new" internet.

Early 90's internet was seedy. I didn't personally start posting publicly again until 2007.

I know what you mean but personally I feel there was much more honesty and trust back then. I learnt so much during those years. Today the internet represents what we see out there: shopping malls, ads and stuff rule everything.
Maybe I'm too old fashioned  :D

It's not seedy now? Boy, one learns something new every single day. As many have experienced, the internet does strange things to human behaviour. I think it's prudent to minimise any opening for that to spill over into real life if you can help it.

I am from India... If people want they can post in their country's subforum...
Since a lot of scams are going on over the Internet,  maybe people are scared and would like to keep it personal.. :)
I see a lot of hatred about religions in this forum, so better to hide your location if you are from an islamic  country..

I started this thread because I wanted to buy Bitcoins for cash, and make the transaction through a face-to-face meeting. It's difficult to arrange this if you don't know where a person is based (or travelling). People seem to have misconceptions about cash - some even think PayPal is cash. Even PayPal thinks it has invented "new money" it seems.

Why would anyone post their location in this forum. The greatest feature of bitcoin is its anonymity so why would anyone come out and post their locations?? Give us at least one good reason.

For me anonymity is of no consequence. Bitcoin has got a lot more to offer than that.

Isn't that the truth. :)

My point is that by not revealing your location, you make some trades and contacts difficult if one wants personal contact, or to avoid delivery charges or escrow.

No. People on this forum over-complicate most transactions.
A transaction can be done anonymously with ease.

Simple as saying:

Person A has an iPhone. Person B has BTC0.69
If Person A refuses to deal with an escrow. Then the transaction should not be done. Majority of the people who offer escrow services don't require any fees to be paid.
And having good trust always helps.

If the item is a car for example. Then dealing with a trusted member is ideal as you could assume they would keep your location private.

That's exactly my point. So a guy has got a nice Shelby Cobra for sale, and I fancy buying it. If I don't know where he is, then it's a waste of time thinking about it. He's probably in California, and I'm in England.

Not everyone is here to do trades and make real life contacts.

And if you reveal your location you will be exposed to stalking and trolling too. When you receive letters with shit and used toillet paper you probably will regret that your localization is known
