Dallas reports case of Zika spread through sexual transmission, CDC advises avoidance of semen of people exposed

Dallas County, Tex., health authorities said Tuesday they have received confirmation of the first Zika virus case acquired through sexual transmission.

In a statement, the Dallas County Health and Human Services department said the patient was infected with the virus after having sexual contact with a sick person who returned from a country where Zika virus is present. Dallas authorities said they received confirmation that the patient was infected from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This represents the first case of someone being infected while in the United States during this outbreak, the CDC said Tuesday. The other Zika cases in the United States have all involved people who have returned from Zika-affected regions.

As Zika spreads, Texas reports sexually transmitted case

Miami (AFP) - Texas reported a case of the Zika virus being sexually transmitted Tuesday, fueling fears over the rapid spread of the disease blamed for a surge in the number of brain-damaged babies.
With concern growing that an outbreak sweeping Latin America could spread much farther, health authorities in the southern US state said they had confirmation of the virus being transmitted by sexual contact and not just tropical mosquitoes.
That is a troubling prospect for the United States, Canada and Europe, where Zika had so far only appeared in travelers returning from affected areas

Safe sex is necessary to prevent all disease. Including now Zika and Ebola. First told that Zika you have by beat of mosquito and now through sex..It looks like most affected are pregnant woman because it attacks unborn children and causes mycrocephalia...but does anyone now so far are any consequences for other people? Do you hold virus in yourself..for ebola it was told that few months after being healed the virus still can be in the body

Zika virus forces Red Cross to change blood donation policy

U.S. Red Cross: Wait 28 days to donate blood after visiting Zika areas

In response to the Zika outbreak, the American Red Cross is asking people to avoid donating blood if they traveled to Latin America or the Caribbean in the past 28 days.

Blood donors who develop symptoms of Zika, which is spread through mosquito bites, should contact the Red Cross within two weeks so their blood can be quarantined, the organization said in a statement Wednesday.
