Title: [new ppl should read]Goxxing: the art based on fail that create spikes
Post by: myself on January 08, 2013, 12:40:07 AM
Mtgox decided to support multiple currencies under same order book, so instead of having one order book for USD, one for EUR, and another for every single currency they support, mtgox calculates the order book prices based on pair crosses against the USD and a certain percentage on top of that.

where you can see the order book of fail
http://mtgoxlive.com/orders?dark;currency=EUR
http://mtgoxlive.com/orders?dark;currency=CAD
http://mtgoxlive.com/orders?dark;currency=GBP
.............
or you can go to mtgox live and look on the help/option and select a currency

Q /so where is the art on this ?
A / a 400BTC buy on the EUR market can spike the USD market 12 cents upwards

Q /can there be also crash ?
A / yep is the other way around

Hmm I don't understand how this is fail? If there were no this conversion, there would be just more difference between different currencies, and then arbitrage guys would handle the the difference? Not it just more automatic & efficient.

last night the price spiked to 13,72 but orders until 13,72 on USD order book just stay there, that sufficient fail for your standards ?

I thought it was a well known fact that the "last price" indicator on their home page reports silly numbers. The solution for you: don't use the "last price" indicator!

It's not only the "last price" displayed on their home page. Look at the first spike > $13.70 on MtGox Live. That spike shouldn't be there. There were plenty of ask orders at 13.6x when that spike appeared.

Yes, this isn't simple improper display or reporting afaict, they've been matching incorrectly for years.

Mixing the books is fine if you do it correctly. Mixing them doesn't make 13.72 in USD lower than 13.71 in USD.
