So the avalon is about 256Mhz/chip, ASICMINER also ,means that the ASIC one chip is about 300Mhash/s ? and the avalon speed is about 72G,so they need totoal chips is about 200pcs? It's pretty standard to produce a pipelined hashing "core" that will indeed do 1 hash per clock, but it's possible to pack several on one chip. Also, I suspect that clock rates can be pushed way higher than 256Mhz with sufficient cooling.
