Title: Taiwan earthquake: more than 100 still trapped under collapsed tower block
Post by: zenitzz on February 07, 2016, 07:42:10 PM
Rescuers have pulled more than 170 survivors from the 17-storey apartment building that collapsed on Saturday after a powerful earthquake shook southern Taiwan.

The magnitude-6.4 quake killed at least 26 people and more than 100 remained buried in the rubble of the building in Tainan.

With the extended lunar New Year holiday – the most important family holiday in the Chinese calendar – beginning on Monday, celebrations were set to be subdued in Taiwan.

President Ma Ying-jeou and the president-elect, Tsai Ing-wen, cancelled the handing out of envelopes of cash in their hometowns, a holiday tradition for Taiwan’s leader.

Tainan mayor, Lai Ching-te, said authorities estimated 124 people were still trapped at the site of the collapsed building, many at the bottom of the wreckage. He said rescuers were able to reach many people by using information from residents who escaped about possible locations of those still inside.

Damn shit!

Aren't they used to such Earthquake? How is it possible that a 6.4 does so many damages?

Well don't get me wrong, a 6.4 in most USA or Europe would crash an entire city, not saying it's a small thing. But they're rather used to earthquake no? Most of the time they don't do any damage.

6.4 magnitude of an earth quake zone tells me the builder cut corners in constructing the building. I hope they are brought to justice and God bless the Taiwan people.

It depends on a lot of other factors as well. For example, soil type, depth of the fault rupture, liquefaction susceptibility.etc can amplify the effects of the earthquake. The amplitude of the seismic waves will be greater in areas having softer soil (loam, gravel, silt.etc), when compared to those regions having hard rock or hard soil.

There are news that tin cans were used as part of building materials? They're trying to cut the expenses at the expense of lives of those living there.

Well, true. I suppose I had a bit a Western-ignorant vision ^^'

Never felt an Earthquake in my whole life! And I hope I won't ever :/

Why do we not see much response from the world to this catastrophic event? The world is too busy with too many wars?
