Title: Do you have physical Bitcoins?
Post by: the_poet on February 09, 2016, 11:36:22 AM
I've just bought a physical Bitcoin. Of course it doesn't have any monetary value, but it still looks great. Furthermore, I think it can be a very good way to introduce BTC to your family/friends: seeing it as a physical coin, I think they are more likely to become interested in "knowing more" about it. Who knows?

If it is real, it has value and will probably have much more in the future (rare collectibles). Also if it is made out of fine silver/gold it will always have some value.

Do you have any physical Bitcoins?
I have the original Kialara, 2 silver wallet coins and have ordered more. All are amazing. If you're really interested in coins, then you should check out Mitchell's collection with 120 items (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1261680.0).

Well i guess there is still a long time for me to have one like that in my hands :D

To be honest, I bought it on eBay for $3. It claims to be Gold plated iron: not sure how true that could be, but for $3 I'm very content with the purchase, especially if I can get my family and friends to start using Bitcoin.

Mitchell has an awesome collection, a good place to go and salivate.

I have a few of bigtimespaghetti's coins - the silver goxxed coins and an Unobtanium bar. Also have a few novelty bitcoins.

While these aren't exactly coins, I love having these in my collection: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=852488.0 (Bitcoin certificates).

Well then it isn't really worth much. There are a lot of coins that are much more expensive than that (I think my Kialara was about $100). Take a look at the newer ones (http://www.maxfield.me/blog/).

Yes it looks very good but for now the value still not really good, but in the future it will become rare collectible

I currently just good one from my friend, the value according to him is around 0.1 BTC

I've never researched into physical bitcoins purely because I've had no need to & couldn't be bothered.

Couldn't you get your private key & bitcoin address engraved on the coin though, effectively then it would obviously have value as you could send bitcoins to it/them.

Is that what a Casascius Coin does ;D

They don't need to do that to have value. You need to consider two things: 1. They are collectibles; 2. They are usually made out of pure silver/gold (sometimes graded). They will always have value which is most likely going to increase over time. There are some coins that have an address and private key in them, albeit they are art pieces (Kialara; you kind of need to break it to get to the private key). There are also coins such as the Silver Wallet (http://silverwallets.com/shop.html), that come with a coin slab in which you can easily add a new address (with QR code) and a private key.

Wow .. What was the original form of bitcoin and whether it official?
Where did you buy it? I want to buy it, it's very nice shape.
Perhaps if it could be used to purchase it so amazing.

There can't be a "official" form of physical Bitcoins. Bitcoin does not have a central authority; who would proclaim it the 'official'?

You can buy various ones on the forum.

No I don't have any physical bitcoins.
Bitcoin is pure digital therefore I also explain it to people this way if they are interested.
Very often you see news articles where metal coins are used to give Bitcoin a face. This is ok but still confusing new interested people in the beginning.

I'd like to mention that provenance is important to some collectors as well. Having a pgp chain of custody document can increase sell value, especially if it is a "one owner" coin.

At first I thought it's one of the expensive one's, just like the one's go on sale on this forum, but since you mentioned only for $3, then that explains why it doesn't have too much value. Could you post the other side of the coin as well in case their different? I think it would be good gift to friends and family (make them go nuts, thinking it values as 1 BTCitcoin - sort of prank :P ). I normally don't get amazed by these coins that much (don't get me wrong, I'll be starting to collect some soon) but the one Lauda posted a while ago: http://www.maxfield.me/blog/  It's without a doubt, the best I've ever seen so far. Anyone knows who designed it?

no i have no bit coin in physically .
and it is also useless according to me.
because the advantage of bit coins can be seen clearly according to its profit .
and i don't think that there is any profit also to buy physical coin.
i think we should buy gold coin that would be great opportunity for our future also.
and it is not necessary that we have physical btc coin or not
but we should have some btc in online. wallet .

Introducing Casascius coins {physical Bitcoins as you put it} to you family, is very different than introducing a digital token. They might be even more confused after you show them the physical coin. We try not to associate the two with each other, because Bitcoin is just a digital token.

The Casascius coin is only a collectors item like anything else, not a representation of the Bitcoin currency.

While that physical coin (medallion) may be cool for a conversation starter, using it to introduce people to Bitcoin would indeed need a good conversation behind it. Someone who doesn't know what Bitcoin is, or maybe has only vaguely heard about it, would walk away even more confused thinking bitcoin was another coin like a silver dollar or something.

For me, I guess I would fall into the camp where a paper wallet would be the closet thing I would have to a physical bitcoin.

I don't know about that.  I think introducing someone to bitcoin with a physical bitcoin--especially if they have no idea what btc is about--would be confusing.  They'd link bitcoin with a physical coin, which it really isn't.  I can't stand news stories about bitcoin where they feel they need a picture in the story, and it's always a gold-colored token with the BTCsymbol on it.  There doesn't need to be a fucking picture in these stories.

Anyway, unnecessary though they are, I do like some of the coins.  I especially like the ones made out of precious metals, and as what'shisname up there said (can't go back, clown will eat me), coins made out of gold & silver will always be worth at least melt value.
