Title: [ANN] Cryptobill.com - Add BTC to your USD and spread the word!
Post by: edd on January 11, 2013, 03:42:55 PM
Inspired by discussion here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=64727.0), here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=118395.0), and here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=134262.0), I'm excited to announce the launch of Cryptobill.com (http://cryptobill.com/).

Enter the some identifying information from your paper fiat and tie it to a bitcoin address specifically generated for your bill. Send as much BTC as you want to the address and pass it along to someone you want to introduce to Bitcoin. Using the same numbers specific to that bill, the recipient can unlock the private key necessary to import the funds.

Alternately, release your bill into circulation with a few bitcents attached and wait for a fellow bitcoiner to find it and "unlock" the BTC by entering the information at Cryptobill (http://cryptobill.com/). (Defacing US currency is frowned upon by the Secret Service so we can't condone writing a message like "This bill is worth bitcoins at Cryptobill.com" on the note.)

To kick off the Cryptobill (http://cryptobill.com/) site launch, for a limited time, one bitcoin address per day will be chosen at random and credited with an additional 0.10 BTC. We've also already released two bills into circulation that will unlock 0.50 BTC and plan on many more!

That is definitely high on my list of priorities.

It's an interesting concept - but presumably this is just a brain wallet using the serial number as the memorable phrase?
Wouldn't it be safer just downloading brain wallet from github and generating the private key off line?

Just added a $1 and a $5.

I think edd's intent is to make it as easy as possible for the receiver to retrieve the bitcoins.

I believe it's to edd's best interest to not weigh in on any discussions related to the following due to the site's condoning clause: http://www.stamp-connection.com/dept/wheres_george_stamps.html But it should be okay for members here to discuss said device. If such a product is developed, it'll probably be best to present it in a new thread. The implementation should be apparent.

Excellent site, edd. Good show!

That's partially the case. I haven't used brainwallet but, if I understand it correctly, since bills are printed with sequential serial numbers, someone could generate a large number of keys without having the bills in their possession and simply wait until they are funded by a legitimate user.

For now, I urge everyone to limit their use of this site to minimal amounts of BTC.

It's probably safe to say that I anticipate some individuals marking messages on their paper USD to encourage others to find out more about Bitcoin and Cryptobill.com. I created Cryptobill.com so that bitcoiners could use paper bills without writing on them, but it does make it much more unlikely that someone will receive one and unlock the BTC assigned to it. I won't encourage anyone to deface "legal tender" and I won't be selling stamps but I also have no inclination to discourage anyone from doing so. If the Secret Service decides to make life difficult for anyone writing on physical fiat, I'll reconsider how Cryptobill.com should be run but, until then, I think everyone should treat it as a modified bitcoin version of Where's George? (http://www.wheresgeorge.com/)

Exactly! That way you're protected as well.

Okay, you caught me. Even though I didn't want to go on record encouraging bitcoiners to "mark" bills, I did for this promo. If you see one of these bills, you'll know it.

The odds are very (very very) small since I'm living in Europe :)
