Title: Should society always encourage their kids on their future goals?
Post by: TheGr33k on February 11, 2016, 10:43:47 PM
I had a good talk about this with my mother, my father, my grandfather, and my fiance. They all seem to be going against what I personally think, and that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so I am no one to shame a person for thinking a certain way as an opinion is not a right nor wrong answer. However, I have every right to not agree with it, and make that perfectly clear.

So, when I was younger I wanted to be a singer/song writer and pianist. My father never supported me, because he said I wasn't good at it at all, and I should just stick with my academics. He wasn't the only one that said this, mind you. With that in mind, majority rules. However, I can't help but feel some slight resentment. There was something inside of me that always wanted to do theatre and whatnot. People outside of my family said I couldn't sing but was decent at the piano. Nobody wanted me to pursue that dream. If I did and if I had made it, things would have been different. If I didn't make it, my life would be what it is now and I wouldn't know the difference. With that, it doesn't hurt to at least try because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. To think my parents didn't just say "Yeah, go for it. Try, and see what happens" is concerning.

I actually respect parents that encourage their kids to pursue what they want in life, because even if you were "good" at what you did, half of the time you'd still get a door slammed in your face. You might as well at least try and see what happens.

This video is a perfect example of encouragement at its best. Video currently has 6 million views. Guess what show the video is from before clicking.

So, final verdict is...

Pros of going after what you want and you just happen to flunk: Makes a good comical performance.

Cons: Nope. Can't think of any.

Opinions?

I  think the parents encouragement and support of their children throughout their school years is crucial to the success of a child.
