TAKEOVER

Shift is the first fork of ethereum and was the first to release a GUI wallet.

The original Shift developer has admitted to spending the entire premine, but did little to develop the currency itself. After disappearing for several weeks, the original developer reemerged after the second ethereum clone, expanse, exploded in price. He now asks for bounties in advance of any development.

The original developer's highly suspect actions suggest that he can not be trusted with further funds. This thread has been started to keep Shift alive and on a positive development trajectory.

The proposal is as follows:

1. Fork the Shift repositories in case the original developer takes the old ones down in spite (done).
2. Find a competent development team to adopt the project.
3. Fund this team using community donations to a block chain escrow account that is controlled by community consensus.
4. Lock the block chain by hard checkpoint onto the new development tree, preventing any malicious attempts by the former developer to undermine the currency with bad releases.
5. Attempt to get bittrex to convert to the new development tree. If they refuse, find other exchanges that will use it. This may result in a fork at some point, at which time the most active development tree will likely be adopted by all exchanges.

Old dev cannot be trusted. With 250k, he had more than enough to bring this coin to moon. Even today, it's more than 10% of total coin. He just screwed up everything.

Seeing how Shift went with the previous dev, I'd say that the best decision would be to have a new dev team. As long as it is for the benefit of the coin, it will be all right. I hope to see Shift become a very successful ETH clone. If it manages to bring better features than ETH, then it would be worth a while. I'll be ready to invest into Shift once development gets settled.  :D

Nothing to reproach technically speaking. But with 250k, they had enough to launch successfully. They launched without a website. They sold their coins at a low price for a block explorer.
Come on! If you believe in your project, you pay with your BTC and you keep working hard till the coin has a decent value.

The most critical thing is that we will need to convince the old developer to ask bittrex to refer to the repository linked in the OP here. Let's ask as a community in the other thread and see what his response is.

Altsheets is incompetent and i had to help him out setting up a basic configuration in NGINX. So the blockexplorer that you are talking about is partly funded by the shift premine, as are the one who SOIL are using. Good work hehe

If there is a right vision with focus, SHIFT could focus on a certain type of smart contracts that enable automation of industry specific tasks. The focus on one specific industry will make things much easier (not saying easy) and faster to achieve progress than wanting to build a platform for everyone (e.g. Ethereum).

The community could also suggest what kind of industries are in most need for blockchain automation via smart contracts.

If I get thinks right, the question is whether SHIFT focuses on building blockchains or building smart contracts, or what else comes to your mind?

I do not have a concrete development roadmap yet except to restore the community back to health.

Unlike the previous developer, I will not disappear, at least not until I get a properly qualified team together.

I'm a crypto-organizer and I am invested in Shift, so I want to see it healthy. I do not trust the other developer, like others here, because the timing of his return is suspect.

Please join the slack channel. I haven't made time for this project, but I am slowly opening up my schedule to make time and get it rolling. I will check in every day and keep the community organized.

The next step after we have a recruitment push for this thread and the slack channel is to get a block explorer together.

I know a lot of people do not like the closed nature of slack. But we will do a multi-pronged approach.

Daily Update

I just invited a bunch of people. My plan is to make a little progress each day, bringing people into the slack and to keep the thread moving.

I found an open source ethereum block explorer and forked it to the takeover repo. I'll find a dev to get it up and running.

These are going to be baby steps until I free up more time. The first thing I'll do is to procure a server and get the client synced on it. Then arrange to have the block explorer ported to Shift.

I have had one person contact me with knowledge of smart contracts. I have asked him if he will help set up the community-managed escrow.

Right now, it would be good to get some chatter here and in the slack. If you don't have time to participate, don't worry. Post when you can. Ask questions. I'll be here daily until we have a team together.

This is the perfect time to get some massive GPU hash power from big coins like DASH. Must let people know about switching to SHF mining.

Indeed we are well aware of the issues with Ethereums Mist wallet and plan to offer a user friendly wallet that enables paper wallet import with not more than two clicks.

There currently is also a 10.000 SHIFT bounty on that milestone.

I have a mining qustion i want to add some more mining power to my miner/gaming rig .I have a AMD 7990 in it now but want to add a Fury-x or 390-x to it .Does anyone know if ethminer opencl 0.9.41 would mine with  the two diffrent cards in it or not

Pretty cool indeed. This is definitely a better choice for ETH and SHF mining than buying GPUs for mining I think. I will add this to my whitelist. Hope it will be available for purchase real soon. As for SHIFT, I think things will go pretty well for it if development rises. I am keeping an eye on this one.

It can't get any worse than when it was taken over.

I will try to update here before slack. Slack is very good for those who contribute more directly. But I will not shy away from bitcointalk.

Also, I will use the self moderation function only in cases of spam, NSFW, and malicious links.

If you need to sync your wallet and are stuck, here is what you can do to add peers automatically at launch:
(this explaination is for Windows, but is similar on other OSes as long as you change paths and filenames accordingly)

1. Use Windows key+R to open the Run window.

2. In the Run window, type %appdata%\Shift to open the Shift data folder.

3. Right inside this folder, create a file called static-nodes.json

4. Open this file in your text editor.

5. Copy and paste this inside: (yes, including the brackets)

6. Save the file. (If needed, you can always add new nodes in this file later on.)

7. Launch your wallet as usual.

I do not see any progress, some promises. Agree with the old developers better! Give us a specific time updates.

Nothing has happened and people are dumping - no surprise.

This wasn't a "dev" take over. It is a community take over. It's very hard to find developers. A block explorer is being worked on right now.



Remember that the old developer claimed that the premine went to paying for a block explorer. But there was an open source explorer available the entire time.

The explorer "promised" by AltcoinSteps will be produced for free. Remember, the previous dev spent the whole premine already. Just have patience.

If you are mad, blame the previous developer. This takeover thread was started after the price jump, not before.

At some time, they were contemplating closing their Shift pool. I don't know if they did though.

Any news on the take over there hasn't been much said about anything in this new thread lately. I'm still currently holding  around 200,000 Shift waiting for some news about whats going to happen

The mining hash rate has collapsed to 200mhs, I could fork it with my tiny mining rig.

The explorer, first promised two weeks ago, still doesn't exist.

The OP has not posted anything here for a week - despite having been online every day - and then it was only to argue with the old dev.

I just dumped the coins I mined, coin is dead.

I just would like to see SHIFT succeed and am happy to assist anyone that is trying, too - may it be the old or new devs.

All that matters is making it happen.

Is "tx42" still working on this coin there's next to no new information in this thread. I haven't joined their shift slack channel anyone heard anything there should be more updates from who ever took this over.

I'm still around. There is lots of activity in slack, but I haven't personally participated much.

My whole intent in starting this takeover was simply to try to create a forum so that people can get organized. I know I said I would find devs, but the bull market has sucked all the talent, especially making it difficult for a project like this where we have yet to get exchanges to adopt our repository.

I believe a block explorer is close.

But, if the community would like to help, we need a clear set of objectives. Here's my working list:

1. Block explorer
2. Bring codebase up to date with ethereum itself
3. Create community controlled development escrow fund
4. Create standalone wallet that does not need a CLI to run under it
5. Create a javascript browser-side wallet and server API infrastructure to support it (I believe this can be the explorer)
6. Organize a team to orchestrate the porting things like Augur and Free my Vunk to SHF.

I call upon the community to help expand and refine the content of this list.

Please remember that Expanse pumped out of nowhere and this takeover thread was created in the heat of the moment to gather as many people as possible while this coin briefly had their attention. I had not the opportunity to plan time for this project, so I am going by the seat of my pants.

My hope is that the community will organize around a great opportunity to build this coin into something very useful and valuable. When I get from under a couple of projects, I will be able to devote more time to it and be more assertive about recruiting development talent. In the meantime, this coin has already attracted some capable developers and is making some progress.

As for the block explorer, it's just a question of having a server. If someone can provide a server for it, I can set it up pretty quickly.

How much  server STORAGE and BANDWIDTH would be needed do you think.

As for the bandwith, I don't know. For storage, current blockchain is at 1.5GB, so let's count about 1.5GB more every 6 months.
As for the resources, it needs to run the Geth wallet equivalent, and node.js for the explorer itself.

There will probably be a big pump for the homestead release of Ethereum. It's already happening. It would be nice if people could see more potential in this coin.

It needs to have the node running (which is what will consume the most resources), a few GB of storage, and node.js installed (or not, but I need to be able to install it).
