Title: bitcoin at shops
Post by: penguin_brian on January 16, 2013, 04:28:11 AM
Hello,

In theory, Is there any possibility of using bitcoins for transactions, say at the supermarket?

If so, how do you get past the issue that waiting for 6+ confirmations will take too long for the typical customer who is paying in person at a shop?

Apparently not waiting for any confirmations is considered risky.

I think most people use their phones for transactions at shops. I would assume a shop would set up a QR code for customers to scan and send payments to, with a wallet open on the register computer to show that the payment was sent.

As for the confirmations? Afraid I can't answer that. I feel like I read an answer about that once here on the forums or on the wiki, but I don't remember where.

Not waiting for at least one confirmation has some risk, but that doesn't mean that merchants won't accept that risk. Also, there are ways to mitigate and reduce the risk.

Although BTC is a physical currency, and has potential to be implemented in society; it's kind of hard to see it actually being accepted by major businesses in the near future.
