So out of all the competing altcoins which ones do you guys think has the greatest potential this year, and also which one in the long term?

What do you guys see for the future of Bitcoin and do you think Bitcoin has a likely possibility of being replaced by one of the altcoins mentioned above?

I shall select the Ethereum and Monero. Both have strong development team and have actual usage by the community.

Litecoin and ETH

I select Decred and MaidSafe, mainly because i have them :D

MAID, ETH and XMR are probably the strongest contenders this year in my opinion. However a lot of those strong contenders from previous years have been stopped short with no success.

DODGE and ETH

Many site uses this in their faucets to attract visitors aside from bitcoin/satoshis.

Im looking forward for Monero as it has strong community support same with Etherium.

Dash is also catching up with the League ;)

I dont think its a coin we have seen yet. We won't see it coming.

ETH because I and a number of other chaps own a lot of them. But seriously ETH has a lot of serious players behind it. There will be pumps and dumps just as there is in Bitcoin but it has a bright future.

Decred definitely has a tremendous potential without a doubt.

Litecoin is the only one that matters.

i am out of eth for the time being but from the list i have LTC and Ripple and buying as much as i can in the dips.

Maybe something new come up to altcoin scene?

LTC is much better than Ripple. rippler is centralised. It is no better than other fiat digital currency. I prefer ETC.

I have to say either monero since it's there very long. or Ethereum.
Looking towards the code i think Ethereum is the winner here.

As of this week, DEUR is trending ;) I think DEUR will be one of the TOP gainer this 2016, together with ETHerium. It is already equivalent to 1,200 sato  in btc.

My choice would be Ethererum or Monero. One is for the smart contract, the other is for the anonymous transactoin.

Be always prepared.
Altcoin scene is very good now, many clones of ETH and many possibilities,
especially on small exchanges if you enters earlier.

This is really hard to choose now when every day one new coin arrives.
I'm have found it is very difficult to follow altcoin announcements and discussions..

It is very time consuming to identify the scam coins from the good ones. I though Ethereum was a scam and  did not take part in the ICO.

I agree with all the coins you listed here but on the possibility that bitcoin will be replace by another alt coins I don't think it's going to happen,bitcoin has withstand all the possible storm and issues that it faces since it was launched it will still be the number one crypto currency of 2016

MAID, ETH, XMR going to be interesting, XEM and perhaps XRP also worth to keep an eye on them. But this is just the very beginning of the year and IOTA, Lisk are just preparing to turn up.

Clearly HOdlcoin, first coin with a proper implementation of interest. And you can lock your coins for a specified time to get an interest bonus.  :D

A gamechanger imo, making banks and shady investments unnecessary.

Whichever you have invested in is obviously the best one.
That and CLAM of course ;)

altcoins like Ripple, Ltc, Doge and Dash that have been around for long time and stuck around are always good options to invest IMO

ETH FCT MAID XMR VNL DCR XEM. Most of these are already up a substantial % since altcoins started gearing up around December'15 or Jan'16, but this move probably still has legs with the environmental conditions being a hotbed for altcoin pumps at least for the next 4-5 months.

Maybe BTS STR XRP will also go for another big run up this year?

There are some new coins coming up but not sure if I wanna buy any ICOs...

What is the main benefit of the DCR? I saw it mentioned in many places. I thought it is just the PoW+PoS.

I think we will see a rise in some alts a BTC staying the same. ETH LISK XMR will rise but BTC and LTC will do nothing much

None of the above. Especially the ludicrous 'scripts on a blockchain' type coins that absolutely cannot scale with present or reasonably forseable future.
Ripple may break out as a contender for a Paypal type offering but it is not a distributed decentralised system so doesn't really count in this context.


The only future I see for Bitcoin is if they scale the transaction processing infrastructure AND go POS - otherwise it's future is effectively as a centralised store of wealth only.

I see POS coins generally doing very well by the end of 2016 with at least 5 in the top 10. Some may be new with compelling new features and possibilities.

I guess ETH has good potential. besides the price is pretty high, arguably the most coins ETH is good for playing trading

And if you get in now, you can make some good money from masternodes with a low buying.

I'm terms of Dev syscoin is where Bitbay was 6 months ago. Yet Bitbays Marketcap is 10% of what Syscoins is! So Bitbay should rally up soon to have a Marketcap I at least $3m

The Altcoin of 2016 could be the Ethereum. It will convert to PoS in eary 2017 and the issurance of new coins are from 0 to 2 millioin.

I will choose Ethereum. The price has risen 10 folds this year. So the development of the coin can continue, this will increase the price further.

I will go with eth. This coin made very nice jump from nothing to 14 $, back to 10 $ and holding there. I'm not an expert, I just follow conversations here and news on the net and I think we will see some nice jump again.
I didn't notice ripple until now, I will pay attention on that coin in next few weeks.

Ethereum is clearly the alt coin of 2016 there is not even much to argue there.
I did notice verge was pretty big maybe if it goes up another 10 fold we can start talking about that to.

Dash!  Dash!  I have an irrational (according to several members here) fondness for Dash, though I'm not going to pump it and say it's going to the moon or anything.  It's just one that I like, and I've turned an ignorant, blind eye to all the shenanigans that went on with it.  I also like doge and ETH definitely has potential.

There is never a day when you are risking losing money when lending – but there are extended periods of time when some markets are not paying any interest… These are times when the more experienced traders, or those who have more time – can sell out of one coin and invest in another in order to capture better returns in a different market... :-\

Monero and ethereum are both strong but honestly they are still altcoin and they cant replace bitcoin.. 
Bitcoin is our mainstream digital coin.. and bitcoin is growing here in my country, some our store here in my country is nearly accepting bitcoin so its impossible to replace it..

If the Ethereum price is kept above $12 for the rest of 2016, then Ethereum will  be the coin of 2016.

I think dodgecoin has the upper hand this year. It's been occupied by a couple eBay users and so on. Not too often we see that, but it's still rather interesting that here and there we are seeing more people select and adapt to cryptocurrencies.

Altcoin of 2016 is whatever I am holding, of course.

I think HOdlcoin will be it.  I just have this feeling (or stockpile of bias will be coming in a year).  Maybe 2016 is not ready for it.  It will be the coin of 2017.

Etherum or the Decred could be good candidate for the big coins of 2016. They are being developed actively.

I think Gulden (https://gulden.com/) (NLG) will be the coin of 2016 and 2017. Could go places, but you'll have to be patient. The other clones have been hit badly, and Ether itself is tumbling right now. So long as the big boy is falling off the rails, all its clones will have a tough time. Uther will only benefit once it gets noticed & once Ethereum gets back on the pump track.

I would pick Gridcoin (GRC), as it is one of the more interesting coins out there.

Right now ETH is taking the lead, but i think for 2016 LISK has made a great start.

Using BOINC for mining is a plus since we are actually doing something useful instead of just wasting time and electricity mining other coins. I really like Gridcoin and it encourages me to add new mining machines to get more GRC. The more cores you have contributing to projects, the more will be your payout (That is, if you have a good magnitude in the projects you are contributing ;) )

Ethereum can be the candidate for it since it already got a lot of attention from a bunch of people around the net. The more people talks about it the more people will use it and finally this altcoin can survive for a long periode of time. Hopefuly the price wont go down very deep in this year.

 After BTC reward halving decred will be great to mine .

Well i think many people  are saying that ethereum will be altcoin 2016 and its too far to dictate who is altcoin 2016.. many altcoin compitators waves decred ethereum lisk and other altcoin.. and i think there's other new altcoin will release before end of this year and i think it will be popular than other altcoin.. CBX has potencial to grow and i think this is the next ethereum..

Until now it seems it was the year of ETH. I wish I would have known. ETH is not as "clean" as I'd like so I didn't invest at all into it. Stupid me, since it's not the first "not 100% ok" alt with great market.
I think that there will be at least 1-2 more alts that'll take off and I really hope that I'll guess right at least one of them.

But I don't know which will be really the Altcoin of 2016. If I'd know, I'd be already rich and busy enjoying life instead of hanging around on this forum.

I would say for now it's clearly Ethereum. I'm not a bagholder and have some doubts about the concept, but it seems to be, by far, the most accepted altcoin idea in the cryptocurrency sphere and the one with most momentum. It may be the "fiasco of 2017" though, although I expect their momentum to last at least for one year more.

Then we have some challengers like NEM and Lisk. I would also place Monero in this group, as it has grown in a very solid manner. I think all these three coins are way superior to Waves. Waves tries too hard to please the financial world, enabling easy scams with their hidden order books.

Actually ethereum was the altcoin of  2015, and the DAO has suddenly arrived as a remarkable new coin of this year, but bitcoin will remain as the most powerful coin of this year after halving.

Bitcoin is not altcoin :)  ,and as you mentioned ETH was the altcoin of 2015 ,  i think WAVES will be alt-coin of 2016
