Enjoy the trip.

Pretty nice to book a flight this way, would be great to walk into a airport and use bitcoin right at that moment. But this is a great step.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't know how long they have been accepting BTC but this is a huge step for bitcoin. In my eyes anyway.

Is that true. Its a great effort by the expedia team. Surely it will make more customers by the coming days.
It also makes other competing travel sites accept bitcoin. Truly bitcoin is usage is getting increased day by day.

Did you buy bitcoin just to use it to pay for the trip?  Did you get a discount?  Would cash have been more convenient?

I'm not trying to rain on the love parade here.  I do like seeing bitcoin get used, but for most things it's so much easier to use cash.

Hmm, i checked the site for different countries and it seems like bitcoin payment is not available for all countries at the moment. I guess it is only in USA for now.

Here is details;

Paying with Bitcoin

Powered by Coinbase. Our acceptance of Bitcoin is powered by our partner, Coinbase. We do not guarantee and are not responsible for the availability of Coinbase’s services. To complete your booking, you will be re-directed to Coinbase’s website, where you will see the total cost of your booking in Bitcoin, based on an exchange rate set by Coinbase. The Bitcoin price for your booking will remain valid for 10 minutes. If you do not initiate a payment during this time, the Bitcoin exchange rate will be updated and the Bitcoin price for your booking may change.
Bitcoin network transaction fees. As with nearly all Bitcoin transactions, a very small transaction fee (a “miner’s fee”) will be added by the Bitcoin network to the total cost in Bitcoin of your booking if you are sending Bitcoin from a non-Coinbase wallet. This fee covers the cost of verifying Bitcoin transactions. Expedia has no control over this fee and does not receive any portion of the fee.
Bitcoin transactions are final. Once you initiate a Bitcoin transaction, you cannot cancel it (provided however that you may seek a refund per our refund policy described below). This is inherent in the nature of the Bitcoin network, not a policy set by Expedia.
Under payments and over payments. If, using a Coinbase wallet, you attempt to initiate a payment of Bitcoins different from the exact cost of the booking indicated by Coinbase, your booking will not complete. If, using a non-Coinbase wallet, you initiate a payment of Bitcoins different from the exact cost (plus miner’s fees) of the booking indicated by Coinbase your booking will not complete however your payment maybe processed by the Bitcoin network, in which case your payment will be refunded by Coinbase. After a failed payment you will be required to re-submit payment for the correct amount in order to complete the booking and the Bitcoin exchange rate may update.
Transactions complete once confirmed. Once a Bitcoin transaction is submitted to the Bitcoin network, it will be unconfirmed for a period of time (usually about an hour, but sometimes longer) pending full verification of the transaction by the Bitcoin network. A transaction is not complete until it is fully verified.

That's good news for you. I hope you can challenge your self on this vacation of yours to spend only Bitcoins and see if it's possible. From booking a hotel, dining outside, buying souvenirs but I don't think you can use that for your mode of transportation like moving around the Country.

Actually they've been accepting BTCitcoin payments for a while now and IIRC there have been numerous articles regarding it as well. There are some more known other sites that do the same, some even would allow you to book a hotel too with the use of BTCitcoin. On a side note: I've managed to book a bus (for long route vacation) with BTCitcoin as well, even though the process was a bit of a head ache but was successful.

It's nice for you to share that you used bitcoin for your trip. Expedia has been accepting bitcoin for quite some time as early as way back 2014. Unfortunately, those that you can pay with bitcoin are not yet established on every coutry. I gues you can pay bitcoin for the hotels and services that agreed to receive bitcon as a payment.
Have fun with your trip!

Only available for United States resident but not for long, once it becomes very successful it will be adapted by every country expedia has local subsidiary here in our country and they might recommend bitcoin in the near future,we already had a lot of companies using that and I'll wait to see expedia networks to use it also..

It is good to know that Travel Agency have started to use Bitcoin as payment mode. but sad that only USA citizens can only use it , as they are using coinbase as their exchange services and coinbase supports only US citizens only. But it is right as other country are still did not made any changes of Bitcoin Technology uses in their respective countrys.

They do not force you to use Coinbase for no reason. Coinbase are known to bend over to the governments and all their regulations and makes sure they collect all the necessary information needed to follow you, wherever you travel in the world. They will even know what you did on your holiday and what you spend your Bitcoins on.

If you signed up for their debit card, you hand all your private information to them on a platter. Just look at the detail of the information they are gathering here :

I used bitcoin that I have been sitting on for quite a few years. No discount. They just treat it like a credit card. Could not have been more convenient. As far as spending bitcoin once I'm there? Not a chance in hell but I'm content with a all inclusive trip at a beautiful resort.

The hotels have no idea HOW you paid and they don't care. Expedia does not pay them with BTC. It's just another transaction for them. They will be paid before I get there with whatever deal they have going on with expedia.

Damnn, im currently travelling and im not able to book flights because i have no credit card, and actually... i dont think i really want one.

But now i found out that i cant do it with expedia or coinbase because im not a us citizen.

Are there other sites that offer bitcoin as a payment to book flights? Something like skyscanner or expedia.

Would be too convenient.

How are you even travelling without a credit card? Do you have a debit card then? How do you exchange money to local currencies when you arrive? You must be carrying around wads of bills in your luggage then  :D

That's interesting that OP have booked a trip using bitcoins. We should encourage to use bitcoins in every possible field.
It will help promote bitcoins. But with bitcoin debit cards, every field can accept bitcoin. But direct bitcoin payment is what we still look for.

I am not surprised more and more places to take and accept bitcoin. The amount of places that are deciding to accept bitcoin is just increasing. I think a lot more people will be open to generally accepting bitcoin once they realize and understand the true value. Still, bitcoin is relatively unheard to many people and the longer and more positive exposure it receives, it will only be beneficial.

I hardly ever use my credit card while traveling -- I usually withdraw money from ATM's with my bank (debit) card instead. I find working out what things cost and paying with foreign currency to be part of the fun! :)

Booking a trip using BTC is a great idea, not just because you are using BTC , but that always gives rise to more innovative ideas. I think such ideas will give rise to more people using BTC at more places.

I would love it to plan a vacation, accommodation, spending budget and travel expenses that are funded only by bitcoins so I don't need to use my credit cards or cash. I would buy a lot of pre-paid cards in the country I am in and try to live entirely on Bitcoin every day. I think this could be a great adventure and achievement showing that Bitcoin is real and can help you survive in a foreign country.

I'm going to the Bahamas in April! 8)
Thanks expedia!
I just wanted to share. I had no idea they excepted BTC.
This is my first "big" purchase using bitcoin and I'm stoked.

Excellent. Did you book everything including the hotel, flight, ground transport, meals and guides?

Maybe you can throw a few message-in-a-bottle with loaded bitcoin paper wallet while you enjoy the beach. Someone might pick it up one day!

Wow, this is amazing. We can pay our bills using bitcoin and pay some merchants but not a Plane Ticket. I hope this mode of payment in airline tickets gets to most countries :)
