Title: Paypal Making Aggressive Changes To Account Freeze Policy
Post by: sunnankar on January 22, 2013, 02:36:03 AM
This article highlights how Paypal has pissed a ton of account holders off (http://money.cnn.com/2013/01/21/technology/paypal-frozen-funds/index.html) by arbitrarily and capriciously freezing accounts. It really needs to some comments about how Bitcoin is a superior tool for collecting donations.

Maybe some of their updated security policies will help cut down the chargeback nonsense.

I'm shocked, could that be competition?  ;)

TL;DR - Paypal Making Aggressive Changes To Account Freeze Policy

Article itself said nothing about the changes.

dwolla is a very viable competition already in my opinion, but paypal has ebay on back, where thousands of small business rely on their "reputation" on ebay to survive.
Paypal has certain monopoly power  because of this

ebay already has significant competition from alibaba. Since most of the stuff sold there is from China anyway it's way cheaper. (Many sellers offer free international shipping)
And you get the advantage of ordering it directly from the manufacturer.
Finally that is payment system agnostic. If bitcoin were to get big it would be this way.... sadly since that means the western industry is doomed.

Maybe it'll cut down on some of the people-still-use-paypal nonsense.

Maybe they started losing tons of customers. And they noticed that there is something else better than them, bitcoin. So they are "a little scared"  :D

+1 I like! This is great news, even though I doubt they are scared of something the size of Bitcoin.

Too bad dwolla is not available for 95% of the world population

Bitcoin has more potential to reach 95% of the world population than dwolla and paypal, in my opinion. Though equally, bitcoin face its own uncertainty. But paypal and dwolla's business model is easy to replicate somewhere there is no way they become dominate globally for any long period.

I tought that PayPal was already a global payment processor, from many many months ago.
Since Bitcoin isn't backed by the State of any country, all the others are more probably of success until Bitcoin reaches the mainstream use.

Haha, interesting story. It's sad that PayPal will make agressive changes to their currrent elaborate procedures of releasing blocked accounts. And the article said something about the fact it needs to be easier for the customers. Yet, they could not say anything about WHAT will be changed, or HOW it will benefit the customers.

For me it seems bitcoin is a better alternative. Nobody is going to freeze your funds if you use bitcoin.

I also think that anyone that has to file a shitload of paperwork to have their funds unfreezed with PayPal, and is using a ton of time and resources to do this, should have their time compensated from PayPal. After all, time is not free. It seems like that a typical pattern at PayPal is to freeze funds if you suddenly get a surge of income to your account. In understand they may want to look into it, but resolving it within a week should be perfectly possible and reasonable, at max 30 days should be the maximum limit.

Competition will change the market anyway. PayPal will not be big forever.

Saw this article earlier today. Like I said after initially reading it...I have to see it to believe it. Even after I see it I may be skeptical. Paypal makes up rules as they go along.

Too bad 95% of the world population wouldn't use it even if it were available, on account of it being a piece of shit.
