Title: silly mining questions
Post by: romerun on January 22, 2013, 04:38:23 AM
I should be able to google them myself, but I'd like to take the opportunity as being a newbie to inquire the followings:

1. I do have free electricity, but the bw is quite limited, is it disadvantage in mining ?

2. If I can somehow get one of those ASIC thing, do I need a computer to plug it in or it will work out of the box like a rice cooker.

that's all for now.  ;D

Bandwidth is pretty negligible in mining; I don't have any specific numbers, but I've found to any internet connection whatsoever is good enough for ~700MH/s at the least. If you have free power an nothing else to do with your GPU(s), there's not much better to do.

Further, if I'm not mistaken, no ASICs work out-of-the-box. You're going to need a host PC to get them to do anything - but don't quote me on this. I'm only mostly certain ;D

1.) In total, I don't think my miners use anymore then 10KB. I'm running mine on a 1Mbps line. As long as your latency (ping) is fine, you're good to go. If it's 1000+ms, you are likely to experience stale shares.

2.) Some of them need to be plugged in, some don't. It depends on which model you are looking to purchase.
