How many of you use Bitcoin Vanity Addresses ?

They are the addresses that can be customized .

It seem cool to have one. Actually I was thinking of getting myself a vanity address I just don't know where to get one.
I'd like to see my name on my address and it also can be handy to show proof that the address is really mine since I have my name on it. :D

You can Only set 6 - 8 letters from left side succeeding "1" as it is a must for all BTC Addresses.
The software uses the power of the CPU and GPU to "Guess" the Address. It may take from 10 seconds to 2 hours depending on the length and Luck !

edit: you don't get these addresses by chance, you make them.

there are no tips. but steps to take
- you choose a couple of characters (case sensitive) that you want your bitcoin address to start with
- put it in the code (command line) the link (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=25804.0) for the code is in comment #3
- wait until the code finds you your custom address (it takes a long time if you have a slow PC or set a lot of characters)

yes there also one address "only number" ... and even you can create by yourself just a matters of time :)

Ive got literally hundreds of these, probably better versions of what ive posted but cant be bothered looking through them all to find my best.

Whatever you do, don't let someone "make you" a bitcoin address.  If they generate it for you then that means they know the private key.  The address will be worthless to you if anyone but you knows the private key.

It matters how it is generated. If he give out just private key, then yes it is not recommended. But if he mine with specific public key then he generate just private key part which is only usefull to the owner of the public key. For more info I recomnend to read:

It's my vanity paper wallet that I made on an Ubuntu Live USB. It took me a long time to figure out how to mak that securely!


I could easily do this for you.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Generate a hex format public key (on bitaddress.org.. Click address details).

2. Send it to me. (via pm)

3. I use the pub key and create a vanity address with your name (let me know if you want it case sensitive or not).


This is called split key vanity gen. It's a method where someone else does the work but still doesn't kno your private key. Don't take my word for it. Look it up!
Never trust those website that will make you an address. They'll have your private key. Always do split key vanity gen.

Thanks for clarifying that. I wasn't trying to say there was no way of doing it, just trying to warn people. I've seen people selling vanity addresses that they have completely generated themselves.

I have used it before and made some good ones, but now a days you can only get first few letters like 4 for free, if you want further then you have to pay some good amount of money to get it.

I would much rather go for a straight address created without Vanity, because in my opinion the Vanity generated addresses are less secure. If I used one, I would not store large amounts of coins in them, but that is only my opinion. The debate is open for people to discuss this in more detail and prove me wrong. ^smile^

I like the conservative approach to the safe keeping of my money, and would not risk it.

It took me only an hour to create this address in which First 6 letters were of my name. It generates addresses faster when the case sensitivity is turned off.

I would soon make my own address and post here, but I have a question, do we get private key and all the keys associated with the addresses ? Just confused a little bit.

I think there was a similar thread on 'awesome' Bitcoin Addresses, however it wasn't about random vanity addresses. These addresses are usually just created for personal sake and are definitely far from what I'd call 'awesome'.

Depending on the hardware it might take time but with every consecutive letter it becomes much longer.

Anyone can, just don't go for more than 5-6 letters and it shouldn't take too long.

Leave it over night and it will be fine.

It's pretty simple... Use vanitygen (a program to create vanity addresses). Just run it without any options, and it'll show you the help-instructions... Follow these instructions, and 'mine' for a vanity address.

The program will show you the private key and the associated address... The address is not that important, you can always recreate it using your private key. Just make sure you write down your private key, because if you lose it, you lose access to your funds ;)
Oh, and also, never give out your private key... Whoever has controll of the key, has controll of the funds...

It helps because then there is only one option for "i" so when you go with the case insensitivity option that one letter can only be a lowercase "i".

i used to use vanity addresses, but then someone told me how using one address over and over again is really unsafe. so im using coinbase rn, but they dont support vanity addresses. would be cool though.

What's really concerning with what you just said is the fact that you were worried about security therefore you use the absolute worst secured kind of wallet. An online wallet. They have access to your private keys just an FYI.

Yes using the same address isn't recommended. Basically because then anyone in the world can easily see where you're sending and receiving money to/from.

I would suggest you look into safer methods of bitcoin storage... Now. Before it's too late and you're left holding the proverbial bag.

The software is solid man, terminate your internet connection whilst doing it or run on a computer that does not connect.

I never bothered with this 'address customization' because I don't think it is important at all. Bitcoin addresses are like bank account number to me.

Only split key vanity gen is safe. Don't trust a website that generates a key out of thin air. What you need is to create an address youself, use the hex format of your public key and from there they can create a 'part private key' use that and your original private key to create your very own vanity address!

I heard storing too many bitcoins on a vanity address could get them stolen because the service you created your address at knows your private keys and someone with an access to the database could rip you off easily. I don't know if this is 100% true just heard rumors.

It might be (when services are involved), but generating addresses online isn't recommended anyhow. However, it is best to avoid using such services and generate your own vanity address on your own machine. It's as safe as the standard generation of addresses..

So you wouldn't prefer a simple bank number that you can remember or that symbolizes something? It is really easy to generate your own vanity address.

I'm not sure I understand what you are talking about. How could they know your private keys? I thought they have no way of knowing the  private keys they produce, otherwise it makes no sense.

I had a vanity address starting with the word Xana "a computer program in a tv series I used to watch", Stopped using vanity addresses in general because of the unnecessary additional risk to the storage of BTC in that address.

if you use vanitygen offline mode (use Cmd) to create your own custome bitcoin address it's very safe, no malware, no virus, No risk, no one can see your privaet key. but if you use online mode it's very high risk some people lost his bitcoin.

I remember seeing something like that thread for a couple of times before. I used to use a lot of vanity addresses but now I don't trust vanity addresses anymore. This is a advanced development in Bitcoin. The address has got such a option to customize. It makes users remember their address easily. Recently saw a option in dash in which we can customize address giving a separate name.

I would never trust any website that offer a vainty address service because they will have control on your private key and they can steal your btc whenever they want
It is not difficult to create the address using a normal PC. It takes few minutes to create 5 letter customized address

there is some way of doing it through bitaddress.org but not sure how where someone creates it but dosnt have access to full privkey.  The vanitygen thread explains everything you need to know check it out....

I would have liked it to start with 1sharma, but at the time of creating, i was on my linux box, and couldn't get oclvanitygen running, so i had to use the regular vanitygen, and it would have taken to long to create my full username.

Yeah it's just like a fashion statement to me and people create these to be cool  :D

For normal users, it's more like a fashion statement, as stated above. For people running a business, it might actually have an other positive effect: brand recognition.

Also, since you can run vanitygen from an offline PC, you can use this system to generate paper/cold/offline wallets ;)

I got few vanity addresses before but they have a big disadvantage of being at risk of being compromised during the process of their creation, if you make your own address then it is awesome I guess  :P .

Bitcoin addresses should need a customization option. If such option gets availed one can make it possible and easily memorize with without much difficulty.

Yeah, 1coinzat would take me 14 days for a 50% chance, if you dont care about the case though I could do[1] any case for 0.0004 or 1Coinzat (exact case) for 0.0081.
