Title: [HODL] 1989 Twitter Contest - 68,000 HODL in Prizes
Post by: FreeTrade on March 04, 2016, 09:08:25 AM
Why 1989?

This is a twitter contest to guess why the number 1989 is HOdlcoin's official number.

To enter, just retweet this tweet (https://twitter.com/HOdlcoin/status/705686960006832128) with your guess and your HOdlcoin address.

The top prize is 1,000 HODL - this will be a term locked deposit and will be worth about 34,000 HODL on maturation.

In the event more than one person guesses the right answer - the most entertaining right answer (as judged by me) will win.

Second prize of 500 HODL for most entertaining tweet. - term locked deposit ~17,000 HODL on maturation.
Third prize of 500 HODL for most re-tweeted entry - term locked deposit ~17,000 HODL on maturation.

Terms: One entry per person.
Closing date: 14th March 2016 23:59:59 UTC

About HOdlcoin.

HOdlcoin pays interest on every balance, and had big interest bonuses for early adopters. Like the prizes above, an amount of HODL now can be term locked for a period of a year and grow in size by 34 times. That's down from 40 times last month, and will be down to 30 times next month.

Can I say it here? If it's right I'll create a Twitter account and retweet.

There is a vintage wine called 'Cruz Vintage Porto 1989'
As many people say, the longer you hold your wine the more it's worth which is basically similar to hodl.

1989 = vintage port = reference to wine?

I'm stupid.

It's against forum rules to run a contest like this here - so this post is just for the announcement. It's nuts, but entries have to be by twitter.

I don't use twitter so I'll post my answer here just for fun.
1989 because squirrels don't like walls.

No twitter here but anyway, 1989 was a good year:

  • C standard was ratified as ANSI X3.159-1989 "Programming Language C".
  • start of The Simpsons series
  • Metallica released  …And Justice for All

Apart from the default RPC port number,  genesis.nNonce   = 1989891989 and you can  blame Lee E. McMahon (1931-1989) for sed's syntax...
Looking into code reveals that hash of 1989 helps to make sure that interest rate is same across all the system, no idea how ;)

It will take 1989 days to release a working cpu miner, 1989 HOdl will be price for 1 BTC at that time and exactly 1989 people will make fortune out of this coin. Sending 1989 HOdl to address "1989" will make you instant millionaire..

Not all of you may know but the code was developed while sitting on a bench in the park and dev spotted 1989 squirrels working, before he hit enter for the final time.

Oh dear. Yes you caught me! Truth is . . .  I haven't the faintest idea what a twitter is. My nephew said it would be a good thing to get involved with.

So you can't retweet a retweet? That's a travesty and violation of your first amendment rights, in my humble opinion.

So what should I award the third prize for?

You can always use Likes I'm pretty sure if you are liking the main Twitter post submissions.

That's a good plan - third prize for the most likes for an entry. Thank you!

I was thinking of adding to my tweet, i.e. adding a backstory. Could I make a Pastebin and send it to you directly perhaps? Tweets are limited by character count, as you may know.

Best to add a followup tweet - as long as it is not a separate entry, it's fine!

Okay. Just let us know if there's anything more that needs to be done. Concerned that a followup tweet will get lost among other tweets. As long as you have a way to compile all the guesses systematically, should be all right.

1989 is a tribute to Taylor Swift's pop tour-de-force Album, 1989. I spent a lot of time listening to this album while coding the initial release of HOdlcoin and so it was the natural number to choose.

There were three valid correct entries -

https://twitter.com/haiqu2/status/705713341595930624
https://twitter.com/AltMarketWatch/status/706271870069264384
https://twitter.com/TheEasyTech/status/709413749594017793

They were all equally entertaining (not entertaining at all!) so I'm splitting the top prize 3 ways.

Most entertaining, again it's tough to choose - these were all pretty good, so I'm splitting it 3 ways.

https://twitter.com/botbot1138/status/706052472528347136
(Acorn computer release)

https://twitter.com/gregofdoom/status/707676072276586497
(My release date from prison)
n.b. that whole episode was subsequently expunged from the records.

https://twitter.com/theboccet/status/708098802994040832
(Report on the spread of grey squirrels, dated 1989)

There was some confusion about the most retweeted so I will split this too -

https://twitter.com/sharkdown12/status/706781488675725312
(26 retweets, 19 likes)

https://twitter.com/AltMarketWatch/status/706271870069264384
(8 likes)

https://twitter.com/TheEasyTech/status/709413749594017793
(5 retweets)

Bonus Prize - 166 HODL
https://twitter.com/LogicDoom/status/709023878639702017
(80 likes)

Sending the prizes shortly.

Thanks everybody for entering!

nearly impossible to guess :-D
honestly the first thing that comes to my mind about 1989 is the fall of the Berlin Wall (which has "musical consequences" as well, see the famous concert).
it was also during those years that progressive metal, and other common hard and prog crossovers (and extremes), were conceived.
